Chiodos’ Energy Boost
Two out of the six members of hardcore heavy rockers Chiodos Jason Hale (guitarist) and drummer Tanner Wayne talked to me about the band's current whereabouts as well as what they've been up too over the past 2 years. Now that they are back on their feet everything looks bright and full of non-stop energy.
1. How is the new record coming along? How different is it from the previous albums?
Tanner: The record has been done we recorded it a couple of months ago and being a new member but also a fan is probably a step up but you can’t do a new album without stepping up in the process. I think we’ve worked really worked to make the best music we can make in terms of the Chiodos sound with all of the elements intact. So this guy shreds it on the axe so it’s the perfect little marriage.
2. Seeing the departure of a few members, how are the new members working out?
Jason: It’s just amazing and I couldn’t imagine it being any better.
3. What influences Chiodo's sound? Are there any specific bands you guys are into these days?
Tanner: Muse is a huge influence on this new record. Everything that they do with their music it’s not your typical cookie cutter sound they do their own way with their own style. I’m a huge fan of The Mars Volta so that’s definitely influenced my drumming especially on this record.
Jason: Muse and The Mars Volta.
4. Come 2011 you will have been a band for 10 years what does this mean to you? Do you plan on doing anything special?
Jason: I don’t know I joined about 5 years ago so just make the best of it. (Laughs)
5. Your working with producer Machine and he's worked with Lamb of God and Every Time I Die among other artists, how does it feel to be working with him does he bring out a more heavier inspiration to Chiodos's style/sound?
Tanner: I think he definitely brings heavier. But that’s not what he does with this band he is one of the most amazing human beings around he is the musical genius. So when it comes to a soft song or a hard song he always finds the right comparison or the right inspiration for that particular song making it the best we can make it so he is the best producer we’ve ever worked with.
6. What do you guys have planned for the future?
Jason: The CD comes out in August/September and then just tour our asses off.
Tanner: Then make another record and continue to do the same cycle ya know?
7. What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
Jason: Think we just went through our biggest challenge. The whole band changing it up with brand new members and everything but as of right now everything is going great better than ever before.
8. What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?
Tanner: If I was going to make a joke I’d say ‘Don’t make your own band” Haha no I say just keep going at it but nowadays it’s all about knowing people but that’s how I’ve gotten here. So as long as you meet the right person that’s about it really contacts.
Jason: That’s a horrible way to look at it.
9. If you could re-record, or re-write any song or album of yours what would that song/album be?
Tanner: I’d like to re-record “Ford Best Friends” just because it’s a little different live than what I’ve seen it beforehand.
10. Have any last words?
Tanner: Last words stay posy and keep your chin up and expect a new record from us in the Fall.
