Once known as WhipKraft a change of pace was made and now the once gothic industrial act is now a brutalizing black/death metal set called Killing Moon. Who discuss their beginning’s middle’s and up-and-coming’s come the New Year. So be warned but be ready. Front woman Vena Kava and percussionist Hammer Ash talked to me through email about who, what, and where Killing Moon shall end up come 2011.
1. You were formally named, WhipKraft but changed your name to Killing Moon why the change of pace?
It was a huge change for us, but a very necessary one. We were letting go of one genre and moving to the next. We started out as a Gothic/ industrial metal band in San Francisco in 2004 calling ourselves WhipKraft, it was very appropriate for us. We actually had a synthesizer player and the "craft" was there. However, as we evolved as musicians so did our music. Killing Moon represents what we are doing now, which is purely brutal black/death metal!!!!
2. Since the name change you've released several albums and singles, could you tell me about your last release?
Our last release was a double track album called 'Twilight Holocaust,' it is when we realized we were heading in the right direction, it is when everything came together and we were able to tap into the vein of pure eternal darkness. From there on began our apocalyptic vision. It was a significant departure from our very first album "Welcome to the Chapel Perilous.' Btw, the song Twilight Holocaust also has a music video that can be found on Youtube.
3. Who are you and your band members? Tell your story, for those who may not have heard of you.
Currently we are Vena Kava, Darren O'Brien, and Hammer Ash. We have other musicians we work with in the studio to fill in the gaps. We started out in San Francisco, so the entire lineup changed when the band moved to Boston. Vena Kava is the only original member from day one. When Vena moved to Boston she recruited a entire new lineup, it's as if it was a different band, and in most ways it was.
4. So what has the band been up since that release, your currently looking for a new drummer according to your MySpace?
There is so much going on right now that it's really hard to capture in one paragraph. The fact is that we are trying to finish up our album, most songs are in production mode right now, there are a few that are mixed and mastered, but there is still plenty of work there! We were looking for a new drummer, but there are some events coming up that will change everything, some very big stuff! So stay tuned!
5. Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time?
The songs are written by Vena Kava and Darren O'Brien, or in the Twilight Holocaust double track Michael Desmond and Vena Kava. We believe in eternal damnation of all human kind, the last apocalyptic day, the suffering and hell of all living things, the injustice of tyrants and the servants who suffer without mercy. There is no hope for our world due to the ignorance of humankind. It's quite an awful fate in fact. We live in a world where there is everything, yet many have nothing. There is shit that happens to people every second, every day. People are murdered, enslaved, raped, beaten, betrayed, degraded and to many if it's not their country or someone they know, they put a distance, as if it were not real - watching it comfortably in high definition in their living rooms. It's time to realize, "NO, everything is NOT alright. This world is living hell there is change that needs to happen because already we are doomed! Our music embodies these elements. No, we don't see any changes to these topics.
6. What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
Currently our genre could be considered death with some black metal influences. We like Slayer, Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir, Absu, Dying Fetus, Cannibal Corpse, Children of Bodom, Vader, Iced Earth, Megadeth, Rammstein, Fear of God, Symphony X, Opeth, Iron Maiden, Blind Guardian, to name a few.
7. How did you end up getting signed with RR Records?
Rakehell Records is run by our manager, he was once part of the band, it's mostly specifically supports our endeavors these days, although he had a few other bands.
8. What inspires you to do what you do?
I think about this often and I think i came to the realization that we are probably genetically programmed to do this, haha.
9. So 2010 for Killing Moon is pretty much wrapped up? How about 2011 what will be on the horizon?
We do have a surprise for you guys and girls; it’s going to be big! I know many people may say that, but we’re serious. Check back early next year and see for yourself.
10. Do you have anything else you'd like to say?
Thank you so much Natalie for your time, may our paths one day cross.
