Having spent the time writing, recording, and performing Death & Romance is what they consider "Sleazecore" with a blends of metal and rock. Set to release their upcoming full-length debut this coming summer and touring promotion following afterwards these guys are surely not to be missed or even forgotten.
1. So where does a name like Death & Romance come from and what is the tale behind it?
Having a name that's gunna grab people’s attention is important. So aside from sounding badass....... Death and romance are the two things in life that evoke the most powerful emotions out of people, and that's what we're trying to do as a band. Get a rise out of as many people as possible.
2. Your currently working on your full-length album when did you begin writing for it?
Writing began last March. We hit the studio with the best ideas in August.
3. Speaking of writing, who writes the music and what are your songs about?
Christ comes in with the initial music idea like a riff or something. Usually he sits with Colter as his work out the lyrics and melodies. Me and JJ come in and iron out the rhythm section parts. As well as offer any other ideas we might have and the beast comes alive from there. We really haven't had a chance to write with Mason yet since he's relatively new to the band. But we are excited to see what he adds to the mix. The lyrical content is sometimes based on personal experiences. Sometimes it’s not. But it is always a bit on the darker side. Most of the time they fall into either the category of death, romance or even both, it just all depends really.
4. Who are your musical influences?
Jager, Budweiser, Bud Ice, Monster, Steel Reserve, Night Train, strip clubs...... Shit. Did you say musical influences? In that case it's pretty much Motley Crue, Avenged Sevenfold, Guns N' Roses, Sixx: A.M., Skid Row, Bullet For My Valentine, KISS, Shinedown and there are more. Those are the main ones though.
5. Will the album be released through a label or have you decided to self-release your debut album?
As of right now we are planning on dropping it on our own. We have been contacted by a label though. Not sure what gunna happen with that if anything.
6. Who is producing the album?
We are co-producing it with Christian Brown.
7. Where are you recording the album?
We're doing all the recording at Grand Junction Studios in Waterloo Iowa with Christian Brown. It's a great little studio that Corey Taylor recorded at before the Slipknot days. So it's got a pretty rad history to it.
8. How would you describe the overall sound of the new album?
It's a Rock N' Roll record with a Metal twist. It's got the thunderous crushing drums. There are ratty raw punk bass lines, dirty crunchy rhythm guitar; sleazy leads and crazy guitar harmonies, some amazing melodies with some soaring vocals a lot of big gang vocals and a hint of screaming. Not too much though. We believe in using it as a tool as opposed to a crutch. We've dubbed our sound Sleazecore since no other genre tag quite does it.
9. Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this album?
We just wanted to try and make a timeless Rock N' Roll record. Much the way Guns N' Roses did with Appetite for Destruction. I mean obviously that albums legendary and one of a kind. But that is what we wanted to aim for. We wanna do something that will go down in history.
10. Are you using any new instrumentation you've never used in the recording process before?
Not really. It's a basic Rock/Metal record, having all of the typical stuff vocals, guitars, bass and drums.
11. Can you go into one or two tracks on the new album? If so, can you give us the track title and brief description of how the track sounds and how it came about?
Well we have a song on the album called "Letting Go" and it was the first real collaboration musically that the band made. It kinda started off as almost a ballad in the sense that it’s slower at the beginning of the song, but as the song progresses it kinda turns towards the heavier side. Lyrically the song kinda follows the music. When the song begins it’s about falling in love with a girl and by the middle of the song you are starting to get really sick of her. By the end you snap and end up killing her. So this is a case where there is both death and romance in a song. In the production we pulled out all the stops to get you to feel what is going on inside the guys head in the song.
12. How is the vibe in the studio?
The studio was great, awesome vibes all around. We went in and laid down all of our tracks pretty smooth. We had made sure everything was tight ahead of time. We got to let out a lot of creativity and we worked really hard to make the best possible album we could. However we also had fun with it. We’ll maybe a lot of fun. There may or may not have been some partying. Hey we are still a Rock N’ Roll band after all. There was actually one point where Colter was way hung over and wasn't even able to get off the couch. The rest of us ran to the gas station. When we got back he had like two vocal tracks complete. We were all pretty blown away. Anyhow going in again in March to tie up some lose ends, mix and master. Then we should be good to go!
13. When can we expect the new album to be released?
We're shooting for a spring release. Pry mid to late May if all goes as planned.
14. Do you plan to tour to promote this release?
Going be doing a lot of Midwest dates leading up to the release. When the album drops we will for sure be doing a hometown album release show in Cedar Falls. Then we’ll be doing a few more dates this coming summer so you will see us sooner rather than later.
15. What else can we expect from Death & Romance?
World fucking domination! Aside from a few new bands, there really aren't anymore badass Rock bands. We wanna bring back great songs, anthems, huge stage shows, high energy and everything else that Rock N' Roll is missing nowadays.
