I, The Breather’s Armand Jasari Discusses about Truth and Purpose

I, The Breather is a five-piece band that formed in the summer of 2009. Not too long ago they signed to Sumerian Records and have released their debut These Are My Sins (2010). Now that two years have passed the band's been hard at work on the follow-up which has been just released entitled "Truth & Purpose", this sophomore album is surely to be the next big achievement for them in this metal and hardcore underground scene taking them even further than before. Bassist Armand Jasari spoke to me discussing this release explaining about how the songwriting and recording process differs from their debut album to what definitive goals they had before the recording even began find out what else had to be said.

1. How has the band’s sound evolved from your last release?

Armand: The previous release was an introductory phase for us as a band. It showed what we were about in a very solid way. With this sophomore album, the music itself has undergone a maturity stage, which is a huge step up from "These Are My Sins." We wanted to go over and beyond the call of duty in order to deliver the listener with a fresh new energetic record.

2. Are you using any new instrumentation you've never used in the recording process before?

Armand: The album itself is filled with unique and tight instrumentation. The first song of the album, titled "False Prophet," starts with an eerie guitar setting, which creates a unique ambiance within the song, and sets forth a mood for the rest of the albums entirety.

3. Was your songwriting and recording process any different than usual for this CD?

Armand: The songwriting for "Truth & Purpose," was more thought out and more in depth. The structures of the songs themselves have much more definition, and the instrumentals have matured altogether as a whole. The recording process was pretty similar to the first. We just went in and hammered out all of the material, one by one. The final product was outstanding.

4. Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this album?

Armand: We wanted to go into the studio with the attitude of coming out with something very fresh and energetic. We wanted to top "These Are My Sins" in every way possible, and I think we did just that. We wanted to take a harder approach at the music, as opposed to just writing the same old things that we've used before.

5. What are your expectations for the CD?

Armand: Most of all, we just wanna reach out to more fans. We want people who enjoyed the first album to indulge themselves into "Truth & Purpose," and take in the message that is being carried within the album.

6. When did you start writing for this album? How was the songwriting process different/similar to previous I The Breather albums?

Armand: We began writing the album immediately after "These Are My Sins" was finished. We didn't want to rush anything as far as songwriting goes. Therefore, we took our time with this album, and carefully crafted out each song.

7. Did you feel any pressure to follow it up?

Armand: Each one of us was pleasantly happy with "These Are My Sins." We liked the final product and were proud of what we had come out with. However, after its release, we felt that we were capable of more, and decided to take it to another level with "Truth & Purpose."

8. How would you describe I The Breather to a brand new listener? What would you recommend?

Armand: Despite being a metal band, I would tell new listeners that I the Breather can be very listener friendly. We strive to create music that pertains to each and every person. The meaning within our songs is very unique and easily understandable.

9. Anything else you’d like to say or promote?

Armand: Our next tour is gonna be in April, with Upon a Burning Body and Betraying the Martyrs. We are very excited for this, and we can't wait to get this started! We love meeting our fans, so anyone and everyone that wants to hang, come out to an upcoming show and kick it with us!
