California locals Davey Suicide and his crew of misfits have been terrorizing the LA County scene for some time now playing with acts like New Years Day and Vampires Everywhere! While working at writing, recording, and soon be releasing their debut full-length. Frontman Davey Suicide goes into detail about the band’s upcoming release and all new single and video for the one hit wonder “Generation Fuck Star” along with what else we can expect to see from this almighty suicide crisis.
1. For those readers who have never heard of you guys before, would you mind giving a brief introduction to the band?
Davey: Davey Suicide – vocals, Frankie Sil – bass, Needlz Keyboard & Programming, Ben Graves – drums, Eric Griffin – guitar.
2. How do you feel being based in Hollywood has influenced the band personally and musically?
Davey: We live in the center of the madness. It’s inspiring to be surrounded by endless talent, vibe and history.
3. What has been your favorite part about being a band so far?
Davey: I grew up on sports and understanding the importance of putting the right ingredients together to make a successful team. There’s energy when we create or play onstage together and that feeling is what it’s all about.
4. How did you all meet/decide to become a band?
Davey: Frankie and I met and started working together on a song called “One More Night.” It didn’t take long to realize that we had great chemistry so we started writing more and more. I already knew Ben at that point and Frankie knew Needlz. Ben brought in Griffin, as the final piece, and the monster was born.
5. Where and why did you come up with the name Davey Suicide?
Davey: I hit a ceiling. I had some opportunities that slipped away, and I woke up one day with the idea of 'Davey Suicide'. I needed a constant reminder that we're all in the driver's seat. If I give up on myself, shit's not going to go the way I want it to. I'd rather live by my rules than feel like I'm stuck inside a box. It's about believing in you. Put your trust in Suicide.
6. In your own words what does Davey Suicide do differently than other bands? What elements set you apart most? What are you most proud of with the new record?
Davey: I don't think we do anything differently than any other great band. There’s a formula for success and we apply it to our genre. Our look sets us apart from most bands but it’s always been normal to us. As far as what I’m most proud of from this record, I think the fact that it was self produced. We are self sufficient band, musically, and visually. Everything is in house.
7. How does it feel to be a part of the Standby Records family?
Davey: There is so much hard work that goes on behind the scenes that music fans will never see. It feels good to have a hardworking team that is behind our every move.
8. Generation Fuck Star is your upcoming single why did you want to go with releasing this song as being your leading single?
Davey: The song is a motherfucker. It represents leaving all of your baggage behind. I'm breaking free from all of the things that have plagued me for years and becoming comfortable in my skin. It speaks to kids who have grown up in fucked up situations and it symbolizes second chances.
9. You guys are planning on releasing a music video to accompany the song. What details can you share about the video?
Davey: We’ve made something with Chad Michael Ward that’s going to make the hair on the back of your neck stand up and you’ll need to exhale by the end of it. Join us www.BLANKTV.com on Tuesday, MAY 1st.
10. What was it like to work with director Chad Michael Ward he also worked with fellow LA musicians Awaken The Empire who you've played with before are they good friends of yours? You two should consider touring together in the future.
Davey: The biggest challenge in any artistic collaboration is taking a vision from someone’s head and bringing it to life. I brought my concept to Chad and he tweaked it a little to tie up the story and it surpassed every expectation that I had. Going into it, I always felt that his visual aesthetic fit with the soundtrack of Davey Suicide and it came out that way. It was an inspiring experience. We played our first show with Awaken the Empire and our label mates, Picture Me Broken. I really dig them.
11. Who holds the majority of the responsibility for writing the music? What is this person usually inspired by when in the writing process?
Davey: Frankie and I write the majority but Needlz has gotten progressively more involved. Sometimes I’ll bring a Garage Band recording in and we’ll build off of that. Sometimes Frankie & Needlz have music they give me and sometimes I’ll have a lyric sheet and Frankie will bring in his guitar. It depends on the day.
12. What inspired the music on the album?
Davey: I wanted to capture moments in my life that helped shape me as a person and share them with the world.
13. Who is producing the album? How has the producer aided the recording process?
Davey: It was self produced by us and we send out the tracks out to be mixed.
14. How would you describe the overall sound of the new album?
Davey: It distills heavy metal, industrial, and punk into anthems that are as corrosive as they are catchy.
15. Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this album?
Davey: We set out to be the biggest and best in our genre. Ultimately, I want to give kids music that matters.
16. Are you using any new instrumentation you've never used in the recording process before?
Davey: It’s called, Needlz. He’s doing the programming and synth.
17. When did you start writing for this album?
Davey: Over 2 years ago.
18. Can you go into one or two tracks on the new album? If so, can you give us the track title and brief description of how the track sounds and how it came about?
Davey: “In My Chest is a Grave” is a song about my childhood and it’s the moment you let go of it. I was so angry. I was forced to go to church, and see a shrink. I never had a steady home because my parents were divorced and I’d go between houses every 2 weeks. I moved out at 16 and started sleeping on the back porch of ex-girlfriend’s house. I couldn’t be myself because they wanted me to live up to the social standard. This song is special to me because I’ve carried resentment for a long time because of this and it’s about finally letting go of it. This made me who I am and gave me the ability to tell future generations that if you are living through turbulence, you can channel this anger into something positive.
19. How was the vibe in the studio?
Davey: It was exciting. When you are on the cusp of something special, there’s an unexplainable energy in the air.

21. You’ve gotten to share the stage with names such as Vampires Everywhere! And News Year Day. How was that experience?
Davey: We have a lot of the same friends and we always run into each other in Hollywood so it was cool to come out of the gate with them.
22. What are your upcoming tour plans?
Davey: Our first tour off of this cycle leaves in early June.
23. What do you hope to accomplish in the next year or so? What do you hope to experience that you haven't yet?
Davey: See the world, and give it a facelift.
24. What drives Davey Suicide to make music you love?
Davey: Music to me allows me to keep balanced. I don’t have to freak out on people because I channel it into my songs. I always revert back to the bands that I grew up on and the feeling their songs gave me. If we’re working on a song, we only stop when the hairs on the back of our neck are standing up. If the magic is there for us, it will be there for everyone else too.
25. Tell me about your hairstyle why did you want to go with dread locks as your look?
Davey: I always wanted long hair but I wasn’t patient enough to wait through the in between stage. When I started dreading my hair I was so focused on getting them to knot up that I lost track on how long it was getting. Now I have both.
26. When comes down to the band's attire you guys have some interesting outfits do you always dress like that even just hanging out at home?
Davey: We live this everyday and it’s just a matter of turning up the volume knob for whatever we are doing. I don’t even notice it as different unless I’m with friends and we get dirty looks from other people when we are in public.
27. How many tattoos do you have and how much more do you think you would need to make you happy?
Davey: Both of my arms are sleeved and most of my back is filled. I’m going to finish my back, do some work on my ribs and then I’ll go from there.
