Fear Factory’s Dino Cazares Paves the Way for New Tunes and Tours!
Fear Factory is an act that tends to come and go with no telling as to when the band will be back for good until NOW. Their upcoming eighth album entitled "The Industrialist”, the band has been touring getting everybody hyped up! Guitarist Dino Cazares discusses the band’s time on the road, upcoming tours, and just what “The Industrialist” is truly all about.
1. How is the current tour going?
Dino: The tour is going GREAT we started a few weeks ago and today we’re in Chicago at the Bottom Longue with Shadows Fall, The Browning, The Devastated and Legacy Of Disorder. So far everything is amazing been having a great time, kids are coming out and are excited for the new record we’e just happy to be out here.
2. Have any tour horror or funny stories?
Dino: Yeah one time a year ago our bus caught on fire in England and luckily we were able to get out of the bus and everything off the bus, but it was weird being on the side of the road watching your bus go up in flames. That’s one of the horror stories.
A funny story is we were all partying on the tour bus and the Shadows Fall bassist was so fucked up he basically just threw up all over me. Things that happen on the road it’s fun I told him not to drink the Jack Daniels but he did it anyway. Haha.
3. Have you noticed the economy affecting your tour attendance or merch sales?
Dino: I believe yeah for everybody not just us as a band but everybody, but for us to make any type of income we have to stay on the road and play worldwide really. But the economy I see more in American than other parts of the world. We haven’t really noticed it affecting other parts of the world as much as it is in the U.S. We’re out here being as positive as possible and are here to do what we do.
4. What band did you have the best time touring with?
Dino: That’s such a hard question because we’ve toured with everybody, Sepultura in 1994, Obituary in 1994 was fun, Ozzy in 1995-1996 all of the Ozzfests we did and a tour we did with Slayer was amazing and so many good tours it’s hard to name just one.
5. What's been the best prank you’ve played on bandmates or other bands?
Dino: The best pranks a lot of the time happen when it’s the last day of tour bands like to play prank on each other. I remember we did a show with Ozzy on the Ozzy tour and we ran on stage with Ozzy and we were holding up a big Fear Factory banner behind him and never turned back or ever knew. Everyone in the band knew except him that was one of the best pranks.
6. How would you describe the overall sound of the new album? How does it compare to your last release?
Dino: Well I think the overall sound of the record is a perfect combination of metal as it is industrial music, I believe it’s the purest of Fear Factory albums in a long time. The last record was veryfast and aggressive and had a lot of elements and this time we brought back a lot of keyboards and added more of that and it was lacking on the previous albums. So that’s the difference between the two.
7. Are you using any new instrumentation you've never used in the recording process before?
Dino: No we’ve been a band that’s been embracing technology since we first started playing. So the technology keeps getting better but we’ve always used the same set-up.
8. Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this album?
Dino: Any goals just try to put out the best record you possibly can we wanted it to be a conceptual record where you’re reading the story, lyrics, viewing the pictures and it all fits well with each other.
9. When did you start writing for this album? Was the songwriting process different or similar to previous Fear Factory albums?
Dino: Song writing different yeah it’s always been different, when Bert and I first started it’s always been us, we decided to do the record the same way and that’s how we did it.
10. What inspired the album title? Is it a concept album?
Dino: Yes it is a concept album for sure and the album title was inspired by when I was watching the history channel and this guy was making these war machines and so on so the narrator quoted him as being an “industrialist” so we took that and made it be what we wanted it too.
11. Did you feel any pressure for a follow-up?
Dino: I didn’t feel any pressure for the follow-up because I had confidence in our abilities so I really didn’t feel any pressure at all.
12. What does Fear Factory have planned for 2012?
Dino: We have a video "New Messiah" coming out in the next couple of weeks. Then we’re going to be doing worldwide touring up until December 18th. We just did a South American tour played in Brazil, Chili, and Argentina. Then we go over to Europe and do all of the European summer festivals then come back to the states for a tour in July to August called the Shockwave Tour. Then we’re going over to Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and Asian Countries Korean, China, places like that and back to Europe in October and November with Devin Townsend up until December. So that’s about it between now and then.
13. Anything else you'd like to say or add?
Dino: I’d like to say thank you for supporting us for the pasted 20+ years and pick up the new record it comes out June 5th!
