Los Angeles, Californians EVOLOVE a blend of of the pop and core genres being led by vocalist Lucy Levinsohn will unleash their debut full-length album "Acoustic Sessions Vol. 1" late this summer. This release will consist of four all new songs "3 Cheers", "Everything's Falling", "The Dream", and "Spare Me", all of which have been stripped down versions off their previos debut "2012: Countdown to the End" with other tracks from their EP "Breaking Heartstrings". Aside from this the band has been crossing the road over the last few months playing showcases left and right and now the frontwomen of the group Lucy Levinsohn discusses with me this new release as well as details on who inspires the group, how there writing style develops and just what more we can expect to see develop between now and the end of this year.
1. Can you give us a brief history as to how EVOLOVE got it's name and came to be a band?
Lucy: Honestly, it just kind of came to me. I was thinking up band names and I got this concept in my mind of using the word “Love” and creating a Palindrome. Over the years, we have come up with our own definition of what that band name means. EVOLOVE is the all encompassing love we have for music. It is the force that brings us together, and it is the tie that bonds us all. The story behind how we became a band is that bassist Billy Berman and I had already been in 2 previous bands before EVOLOVE. When we decided to form this band we hit the internet first, a very common way to find band mates these days. We met our guitar players Dave Corsile and Colby Jensen through Craigslist. Andrew Carroll, our newest member, was a gift from our last tour. Our former drummer decided to bail just weeks before we were set for a 2-month National Tour, and we asked a HUGE favor of Andrew. We were touring with his band, and we asked him if he could fill in for us all tour. For 2 months, he played 2 sets a night just to help us out. By the time we came back home, we were family. He joined our band shortly after.
2. What type of band are you?
Lucy: We call ourselves Pop-Core. There are so many genres and sub-genres these days its hard to keep up but I think Pop-Core helps define us. We like using elements of Rock and even Hard Core but our Pop sensibility is always at the forefront of our sound.
3. Tell me about your upcoming release "Acoustic Sessions Vol. 1" why did you want to go the acoustic route?
Lucy: We have performed several acoustic shows for Hot Topic and fans have always enjoyed hearing us in that setting. This record was done as a gift to them.
4. How do you think your songs will transform into the acoustic format?
Lucy: They sound GREAT! A lot of rock music hides behind amps and special effects but with acoustic music there is nowhere to hide. It’s just about the song. Personally I love being able to break it down like this.
5. Who writes the songs, what are they about?
Lucy: We write as a group. The guys write the music and I write the lyrics. Generally, someone will come in with an idea and then we will all massage it and add our own elements to it until we are happy with the result. The lyrics I write are basically about life. I am heavily influenced by what is going on around me.
6. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
Lucy: My influences are pretty diverse. I grew up listening to classic artists that my parents turned me onto like The Beatles, Bob Marley, Madonna, and David Bowie. I grew up loving grunge bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana. I also loved Tom Petty, Tori Amos, U2, Alanis Morissette, and No Doubt. Today I listen to everything from Adele and Lady Gaga to Rise Against and Coldplay. I like to keep my ears and mind open. As far as non-musical influences go, I am always influenced by the world around me and what is currently happening.
7. How do you promote your band and shows?
Lucy: We use all the regular means of promotion; word of mouth, Facebook, and our email list. We try to keep ourselves out on the scene and create shows with our friends because bands helping bands is very important. Cross promotion is an invaluable tool.
8. Describe your show, visual and musically for us.
Lucy: Our show is SUPER high energy and fun. We like to keep the fans entertained. As long as we are having a great time, they are generally having a great time too.
9. What inspires you to do what you do?
Lucy: Insanity! I only say that because this is a very hard business, and because I’m slightly crazy. It sounds cliché but I never chose to do music, music chose me.
10. What advice would you give to fellow bands?
Lucy: Work hard, stay motivated, and prepare to do everything yourself. You can not rely on everything going your way or people handing you opportunities. The more you can create for yourself, the more you will have in the end.
11. How does music affect you and the world around you?
Lucy: That’s a hard question to answer because my whole world is music. I have a hard time separating where music begins and I end.
12. Anything else you'd like to say or add?
Lucy: Thank you for taking the time to interview me. We always appreciate these types of opportunities. People can find us online at:
