The Suicide Ghouls Spookylicious Creepy Interview
The Suicide Ghouls are a Horror Punk act out of Columbus
Ohio and are making a name for themselves quickly. Originally formed in 2009.
they have played with great acts including The Misfits, Calabrese, Blitzkid,
Aaron Omen, Graveyard Boulevard, The Cobra Skulls, The Koffin Kats, and
Juicehead.
Their high energy shows are one of a kind, and they always
leave their fans wanting more. As of right now the band is hard at work getting
things together for their all new album. Tyler Toxic (bass, vocals), Jimmy
(guitar, vocals), and Mike (drums, vocals, guitar), took some time to discuss
their past, present, and future activities for their all new album and what's
in store for now into the next year!
1. How did you come
together?
Tyler- I'll try to keep this short. Hahaha. I was working on
recording some acoustic songs for a solo project I was trying to start. After
recording the acoustic stuff, Aaron (Arcade 86, the guy who filmed our video
for "I was a Teenage Frankenstein") asked if I had anything else I
wanted to record. I decided to try some horror punk stuff I was working on, but
didn't know if I'd like the way it turned out. After recording the first
versions of "Zombie Midget Stripper", "She Bytes", "My
Great Pumpkin", and "Bite Marks", I decided it wasn't just for
fun. I had to do this. I got ahold of Skankula to play guitar, and Derek to
play drums. We then did some shows and
recorded some demos. Derek had to leave due to be stretched too thin, which is
totally understandable. My brother hooked me up with Mike's phone number, and
he's been with us ever since. I
approached Jim while recording "The Fun in Funeral" for additional
guitar and vocals. After we finished
recording the album, Skankula had to leave for similar reasons to Derek's
(Skankula had a new baby, and he lived 1.5 hrs away from the rest of us, and it
was hard for him to make shows and practice twice a week). It's just been Me,
Mike and Jim since then.
2. What’s the origin
of the band’s name?
Tyler: When we first
got started, me and skankula spent a lot of time trying to think of something
that felt right. we wanted a name that was recognizable, but also a play on
itself. Originally, we were thinking "the Koopa Kids", "Gummy
Scares", or the "Scummy Bears".
The Suicide Ghouls just seemed to fit the best.
3. You have a video for the song "I Was A Teenage
Frankenstein" can you tell me about it? Does the song title have any
reference to Wednesday 13's song with a similar title of "I Walked With A
Teenage Zombie"?
Band: Hahaha... no
connection. Just a song about being a
reject in high school. as far as the
video, we wanted to pay homage to goofy b movies. Hahaha.
4. Why did you pick I Was A Teenage Frankenstein as your single?
Band: It felt like that song fit well into a campy b movie
vibe, so we chose to use it simply for video purposes.
5. Who's clever idea was it to call your album "We Put
The Fun In Funeral"?
Tyler: Mine, but only with the consent of the rest of the band.
6. In 2011 you released an EP and your debut release you
were just determined to get the spooky grooves out weren't you?
Band: Hahahaha. Well,
we released the album in May 2011. After
we released the album, we started working on some other songs. The sound and
style we had with Me, Mike, and Jim was just so energetic and aggressive, we
felt we had to release the
"Rock'n'Roll Halloween E.P." .
So we hit the studio again in the fall, and released the EP that Halloween.
7.You guys are of course a horror punk act having your songs
cover a variety of horror based content but is there something within that
environment that you haven't covered but would like to?
Band: We've pretty
much covered all the main topics, so we've been writing more real life topics
and situations, and putting a horror twist on it. And space ghosts of course
hahahaha.
8. Do you write your own songs? Can you discuss the
songwriting process in detail.
Band: We do write our own songs. Hahaha. Basically, one of
us says, "hey guys, I got this thing I did, and we should work with
it". Then we all put our own spin on it, until we like it.
9. You've played
showcases with the likes of Calabrese,
Aaron Omen, Blitzkid, Graveyard Boulevard, The Cobra Skulls, The Koffin Kats,
Juicehead, and The Misfits would you day that these guys are your musical
influences or are there others?
Band: Any band we play with, is an influence on us. We can
always learn from every show we play and everyone we play with. As far as
musical influences, Tyler's daughter's first word, was
"misfits". Hahahaha. We take influence from any band we listen
to. We want to make sure we're not
barred by a pre-conceived notion of horror-punk. If someone who's never heard
us before, listened to all of our stuff, they'd be able to tell that we're
obviously fans of punk, metal, ska, rockabilly, jazz, and ton of other things.
10. Do you have a favorite horror movie if so which one and
why?
Tyler: Halloween the
original. Fuck Rob Zombie's remake. It was the first horror movie I ever
watched uncut, and it holds a special place in my heart.
Mike: Army of Darkness it's so campy.
Jim: I don't watch horror movies, because they're too scary.
11. What was the inspiration for the album name We Put the
Fun in Funeral?
Tyler: I can't remember where exactly I heard it, but I
heard someone say you can't spell funeral without fun... and I loved it. We
felt it represented us perfectly, being that we are the Bruce Cambell of
horror-punk. Hahaha.
12. Since horror is your persona do you got BIG plans for
Halloween?
Band: We're playing a
show with our friends Phantom 13 and Robots' Revenge the Saturday after
Halloween.
13.What are your plans for touring?
Band: We're planning
to release our 2nd full length album this spring, and we'll be doing an East
Coast/Midwest tour throughout the spring and early summer to support it.
14.What is your favorite song to perform live?
Jim: Fear The Ripper
Mike: Lenore
Tyler: Rock'n'Roll
Halloween.
15. What’s the best and worst shows you’ve ever played?
Band: The best was The Misfits in 2010 the crowd was really
responsive. The worst oh god... was when the band first started, we played a
show at a mall... it was awful, they kept cutting the volume on us so we
couldn't hear what was going on, nobody knew us, and we weren't allowed to
drink. It was definitely the worst. but,
I learned a very valuable lesson. Hahahaha.
16.Do you guys have any new music in the works?
Band: Oh yeah! We're working on a new album with 17 gory
tracks! It's set for release in Spring 2013.
17. What else do you have lined up for the remainder of this
year?
Band: We'll just be recording, playing some shows, and a whole lotta drinkin!
18. Anything else you want to add for your fans?
Band: Hi mom!
The Suicide Ghouls Creepy Double Review
What a great way to spread the Halloween howilday cheer than
to listen to an act like The Suicide Ghouls and their two back to back releases
"We Put The Fun In Funeral" and "Rock'n'Roll Halloween" EP both
of which were released within the same time span. Either way these releases set
up a horror punk act that is unstoppable and takes the chances as others have
done i.e. The Misfits, Danzig, Blitzkid, Neckromantix, The Other, and
Calabrese.
With that said this set-up is truly superb and for an act
such as this being an unsigned one is hard to come by for only a few have
gotten away with writing let alone recording material that sounded so crisp and
clean it's unstoppable. Use of the dark vocals, terror tunes which blend so
well with the pop punk vibes it makes this a spooktaular delight of mischief
and eeriness. Having songs like "Vampyr", "My Great
Pumpkin", and the title track off the "Rock'n'Roll Halloween" EP
release; doubles the ghoulish thrills and excitement that is brought on with
the other tunes "She Bytes", "Love You To Death",
"Dance of the Dead", "Resurrection", "Lycan", and
"I Was a Teenage Frankenstein".
The tunes are catchy very upbeat and stunning with an edge
that keeps the music jumping. Whether or not your into the punk scene this is
one of those releases that gets the grooves bumping in everybody who listens to
it.

Evergreen Terrace and Metal Blade Part Ways
Evergreen Terrace have parted ways with Metal Blade Records.The following statement was said about this;
In 2007 Evergreen Terrace signed to Metal Blade/High Impact Records. We are no longer with the label and would like to thank Tim Lambesis, Mike Faley, Brian Slagel, and everyone at MB for everything they have done for us throughout this journey. It has truly been an honor and a privilege to be a part of such a great team and legendary label. This is not the end of ET. Major news coming soon.
Dr. Acula Breaks Up
Long Island, New York's Dr. Acula will apparently be disbanding following some final shows (in Canada and Australia) in early-2013. We've been sent statements from both guitarist Bill Graffeo and bass player Oli Miclette.
Bill Graffeo: "After almost 8 years the band named Dr.Acula will be put to rest. Being the only original member that was left, it is very sad for me to actually have to say this. Dr.Acula started off as a joke back in 2005. Over the years we kept our sense of humour and pissed off many people. I have nothing but love and respect for ALMOST everyone that's ever been a part of DA. Especially my brother Kevin who saved this band on many occasions. I had quit the band a little less than a month ago. I had some personal problems of my own holding me back from continuing with DA. Most importantly I could not handle the 'sketchy' things some people would do within the band itself. Casey, Oli and Chris will always be my dearest friends. Thank you to everyone that's ever given DA a listen, wether you liked it or not you were a part of this. Unlike some people, I never forgot the roots of this band and where our success came from."
Oli Miclett: "It's time for us to move on to new stuff. This band wasn't going in a direction that pleased everyone in DA. Some members kept cancelling tours for no valid reasons, without respect for the fans. With the departure of Bill and the cancellation of our European tour, Casey and I decided to part ways with the rest of the band to concentrate on a new band with a good friend of mine, Blake Moore (ex-Demolisher). We will announce the band and release stuff in January 2013."
Formed in 2005, Dr. Acula has released material with Victory Records and Uprising Records.

ASKING ALEXANDRIA Putting Releases New Song and Finishes Up on New Album
British metalcore act ASKING ALEXANDRIA is putting the finishing touches on its third album with renowned producer Joey Sturgis (THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, EMMURE) for an early 2013 release via Sumerian Records. Guitarist Ben Bruce tells Billboard.com that the follow-up to 2011's "Reckless & Relentless" will contain 13-15 songs, six of which will be "radio-friendly" while the rest will be "our usual balls-to-the-wall kind of stuff."
"We spent a long time honing in on song structures and writing techniques and stuff like that, but there are still heavy songs on the record," Bruce says. "We're not just going to throw that away and kick our original fan base in the teeth by getting rid of all that. There will still be a lot of riffing and screaming. But we feel like we did find a happy medium between being heavy and then being light enough to be on radio, but still keeping the balls in the song."
Most of the new CD was recorded at Sturgis' studio in Indiana, with the vocals and strings and choir parts having been laid down at NRG Recording Studios in North Hollywood, California. "On the last one a lot of that extra stuff was all fake; we did it on computer," Bruce says. "This time we wanted to be more organic, so we got a live orchestra conducted by the brilliant Stevie Black (ALICE IN CHAINS, AVENGED SEVENFOLD) and did all the strings. Then we got a live church gospel choir to come into the studio for a few days to sing over a few tracks. It really sounds special."
For now you can have a listen of an all new song called "Run Free" below!

"It will allow us to work with the bands that we discover that don't necessarily fit with Fearless, and release music geared towards alternative radio, without confusing our established audience. We're excited that we will be able to diversify and work with even more talented artists via Old Friends."
Davey Suicide - Put Our Trust In Suicide
Davey Suicide's "Put Our Trust In Suicide" is the
glimpse into what to expect on the upcoming yet to be released full-length.
Davey and crew has brought the industrial heavy metal back to the forefront of
the music scene, just as other acts before them did, Marilyn Manson, Rob
Zombie, Nine Inch Nails, Fear Factory and Ministry.
Davey Suicide has already been making a name for themselves
as they have toured a bit and released and shot a video for the hit single
"Generation Fuck Star". The song is about rebellion and purely rock
n' roll taking the listener to a whole new reality of music through the eyes that is Davey Suicide.
This is indefinitely an EP from start to finish, that
thrashes you with power chords while the drums hit you like body blows from
fist fighter. Though the course of the crunchily corrosive chaos, Davey never
loses sight of those crucial hooks. This is one of those releases that is
musically vicious and super-catchy at the same time.
Davey Suicide is one of the best surprises of this year. He
has that bitterness and badass in equal measure and whips it into an
industrialized metal concoction that hits the ears hard and yet is commercially
easy to digest despite the vitriol and venom it's dipped with.
Casino Madrid - Robots
Who ever knew that hardcore, metal, and techno could be used
for good. San Diego, Californians Casino Madrid has got a debut on their hands
and this is a full-length release so a continuation of what you first heard on
their debut EP "For Kings & Queens".
When the intro song kicks things off with its chant of “we
are all robots/searching for a purpose/we are all robots/searching for a
meaning” things start to get into the flow of a similar sounding formula soon
afterwards. the interchanging of clean screaming and growling vocals are
dispersed throughout each song, with the occasional pop-punk auto-tuned vocals
used during the chorus. The synth parts aren't overly used but they do provide
a variety effect every now and again. With this you get everything wrapped up
in a nicely sort of chug, chug, metal breakdown of sorts that tends to occur
within most metal songs of today's scene. The variety of styles took into use
does get the job done when listening in keeping the listener in full ear shot
of wanting more as it will.
There are of course several other things at play, such as
gang vocals, occasional melodic interludes, electronic parts plastered here and
there that brings it altogether in the long run. So surely fans of Asking
Alexandria, Motionless In White, and Alesana will eat these guys up!

Wednesday 13 - Spook & Destroy
Wednesday 13's EP "Spook & Destroy" is a mix of new meets old with a few tunes called "M.F.T.W.", "Halloween 13-13", and an acoustic version of the song "Curse Of Me" with the rest of the tracks being re-recorded versions of older songs "Bad Things", "Rambo", "Mr. Motherfucker", along with two others being remixes. It's a toss up of tunes that keeps the classic Wednesday 13 alive and well no matter the tune that pops into his head. The new tunes do carry the torch in still representing that horror rock n' roll while the older tunes stay true to the originals while the acoustic and remixes just become an additions to what's already great.
Heartist - Nothing You Didn't Deserve
Roadrunner Records newbies Heartist have got an EP up their sleeves called "Nothing You Didn't Deserve" with it there comes their hit single "Disconnected" along with other mentionable tunes such as the title track that can be heard at their live showcases along with others "The Answer", and "Where Did I Go Wrong?". All of these consist of that eletronica method with the use of screaming tactics with soft clean vocal chords keeping it together. The instruments are build strongly on upbeat riffs with drum patterns that keeps the music constant and bearable. This is an act that is going to be the next big thing to ever come out of the Los Angeles, California scene and there is no problem with that.

Reverse This Curse - Another Victim
Norwegians Reverse This Curse is post-hard and rock from the
Norway dimension thus their musical tastes takes a toll on the listener having similarities
and guest appearances being quite frank i.e. former frontman of harcore goth
rockers I Am Ghost Steven Juilano and current project Requiem for the Dead,
took his shot at being the apart of the band's current single called
"Another Victim".
As soon as the music begins I Am Ghost and Requiem for the
Dead are what come to mind using the same formula as they have done, guitar
riffs, solos, drum patterns, vocal chords, it all fits in well into what
Reverse This Curse has made for themselves. Other similarities includes Escape
The Fate, Snow White's Poison Bite, and Vampires Everywhere.
The music is creative and easily unique having a solid
ground for a fresh start and fans will surely not be too far behind.
