My Reflection See's their Reflections in Dreamland....

Finland's My Reflection started in 2007 within that same year their first EP was released, as time progressed the band took some time off but soon began writing all new material. Thus this lead them to release a demo recording and eventually their debut album "Dreamland Drowning". Now the time will tell as to where these guys will end up in the coming future.

1. Where does a name like My Reflection come from and mean?

When we started to really focus on doing music in 2007 we felt like we needed a new name. Earlier we had used a name we weren’t completely satisfied with. We started brainstorming and My Refection was one of the ideas that came up. We thought it sounded good. It also had a meaning of our personalities reflecting to our music and we are very close to each other and it makes our music “My Reflection”.

2. Tell us the brief history of your band.

The story of My Reflection started in 2007 as the band was founded in Sipoo, Southern Finland. We were at the same high school. Aki also went to the same high school but graduated earlier than the rest of us. And at the time He was dating Henkka's sister. In the same year My Reflection recorded its very first EP, Slipping Away, at D-Studio in Klaukkala, Finland. After a year-long break, due to military service obligations, My Reflection started making new songs and rehearsing at a new rehearsal studio which offered also a great recording possibility.

In November 2010 My Reflection released a self-published demo album Be My Eyes. The album’s tracks Stand Again, Shadow In The Sun and Is This The End have been airing on Finnish radio stations such as Radio Rock and YleX. In 2011 the band was focusing on gigs and making new songs.

The long-awaited debut album Dreamland Drowning will be available in web shops and music stores worldwide after releasing it 30 November 2012. The first single of album is called Let the Rain Come Down and it is available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon etc.

3. What type of band are you?

We’re making melodic metal with progressive influences. We want to take the female fronted metal forward and make wide-ranging music. We don’t want to be a stereotypic femme metal band. Our band members like various forms of music and every one of us wants to bring out own preferences and something new to each instrument.

4. Tell me about the title for your release Dreamland Drowning?

For us Dreamland Drowning means that the perfect vision of the world is breaking down little by little. People live their happy life and won’t notice what’s happening all around. Our cover art reflects the end of the world as the clock is broken and time is coming to an end as there is no twelfth hour in the clock. For example songs On The Edge and Farewell approach the subject from different aspects. On the Edge comments on the state of the world and Farewell tells about this character whose world is falling apart and she’s leaving it behind. We wish to get people thinking about the world view and pondering how they could change the world.

5. Who writes the songs, what are they about?

Petja is our main songwriter who has written most of the song of the Dreamland Drowning album. Jenni has also written some lyrics for the songs such as Sweet Freedom and On The Edge. We appreciate cooperation and in future we want to make more songs together and let all of us to give their contribution to our music. For example On The Edge was written in more cooperative way.

6. How would you describe the overall sound of the new album? How does it compare to your previous releases?

Our music is energetic metal with catchy melodies. For Dreamland Drowning we wanted to diversify our music and get rhythmically more challenging riffs and nuances of various genres bring them to every instrument. We wish to create emotional and fascinating soundscapes. Our soundscape has changed from the earlier material to more electronic. Jenni also uses tighter pop/rock sound than before.

7. Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this album?

Our goal was to get people to know about us and get our music for the widest possible audience through Inverse Records. The deal with Inverse Records made us want to improve our music productively compared to the Be My Eyes demo album, which we weren't completely satisfied with.

8. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

We've probably had some influences from metal bands with great melodies combined with fascinating soundscapes, like Killswitch Engage, Tesseract and Periphery.

9. Are you using any new instrumentation you've never used in the recording process before?
No, we don’t use any new instrumentation. We wanted bring out more electronic sounds, electro beats and from production viewpoint digital programming.

10. When did you start writing for this album? How was the songwriting process different/similar to previous My Reflection releases?

Some of the songs have been re-arranged for our new style from the older production but we wrote also some new songs and the songwriting took place in the beginning of 2012. Songwriting process differed from previous as we did more cooperation than before.

11. Did you feel any pressure to follow this up?

Only pressure we felt was due to the tight schedule. We wanted do the whole process by ourselves from songwriting, recording and producing to the artwork of the album cover. It was a lot of work and required a great deal of time. At the same time we had freedom to do everything just the way we wanted to.

12. Can you go into one or two tracks on the new album? If so, can you give us the track title and brief description of how the track sounds and how it came about?

With On The Edge we wanted to try composing more together and make the song sound more like the whole band. We wanted to take the song to new dimensions, to more mature soundscape and use more complex rhythms. This is what you can expect from us in the future.

13. How do you promote your band and shows?

Our promotion happens mainly in the Social Medias such as Facebook, YouTube and MySpace. Facebook is our main channel which we have focused on. If you want to get our latest news check out our Facebook site.

14. Describe your show, visual and musically for us.

We have energetic show. We want to have fun on the stage and that the can audience feel it too. We want to provide experiences and share feelings. Playing is naturally an important part of our stage performance. To get the best possible musical expression we use backing tracks for keyboards and backing vocals.

15. What are your dreams and goals?

We want to develop our skills as musicians and get to do music because it is important to us and an important part of us. Every musician dreams on having a musical career and being able to make a living with it.
16. How much more can we expect to see from My Reflection for the rest of this year?

There’s not much of this year left. The album will be released 30 November and the pre-listening is now running on KaaosZine.fi. We have our album release gig 15 December and we’re planning to publish second single of the album. Let’s have a hell of a next year then!
