The Arizona quartet INCITE fuses tight, technical shredding and monstrous grooves together as one. Singer Richie Cavalera is no stranger to quality heavy music. Immersing himself in the genre as a kid, his destiny was always the stage. In 2004, along with Zak [drums], Dis [guitar], and Luis Marrufo [bass], Richie formed Incite with that in mind.
Soon after, the band destroyed venues across Europe, Canada, Australia and the United States with everyone from Dillinger Escape Plan to Soulfly. The group's 2009 debut, The Slaughter, left an indelible mark on the genre.
Now that they're released their second full-length "All Out War" there are totally locked and loaded for a modern thrash revolution like never before! Frontman Richie Cavalera talks about the band's latest achievement and plans for this year!
1. So tell me where did the name Incite come about and does it mean anything?
Richie: I think it came from the musical direction as well as our attitudes. We wanted 1 word that would describe everything about this band. Incite was it, we love to get people going, we have always been the ones to start the ruckus.
2. What type of band are you?
Richie: I think we are a band on the forefront of a heavy music rebirth. We take real to the point metal and fuse it with a little groove, I think the vocals being very heavy with no singing but at the same time very understandable, mixing with the music really gives us a fresh and unique vibe...I can't stand band that are real heavy then break into singing drives us nuts...
3. Can you tell me a brief summary as to how the band came about?
Richie: Well it started with the drummer I knew him from school and what not so he was the choice I had cause I knew how good and solid he was, we then found our guitar player on MySpace he lived in New Jersey at the time so it was very hard to get going. He eventually moved to AZ and we stuck him in a house with the bass player even though they had never met. Within a week we recorded our 3 song EP and hit the road for the next 3 years...Things just always seem to work out for us...it's been a hella of a ride thus far.
4. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Richie: I think a lot of personnel things come out in my lyrics. Life is hard and never stops kicking our asses. So I never run out of things to get pissed about or sad about. I like to unload everything that's inside for each record it's like my diary. It covers money, hate, lose of loved ones, I try to keep it that way so more people connect to it I think...music has always been there for me. So I want my lyrics to help others.
5. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
Richie: It starts with the guitar riffs, then drums, bass, and finally lyrics. It works good for us and goes very smooth we have been playing together for a while now so it's what works for us.
6. How does All Out War differ and compare from The Slaughter?
Richie: I think the new album is more diverse and has something for everyone. The first record was us trying to make the heaviest record ever. I think it is a metal classic and I will always be proud of what we did. The new record shows a lot of growth and maturity in our song writing. We were more experienced and more open to new ideas. The big thing for us was to not make the same record twice. We wanted to take the main influence of the first record, which was heavy metal and mix it with more groove and tighter riffs. I think it is an awesome follow up to The Slaughter.
7. All Out War is your second release did you feel any pressure to follow up from your previous release?
Richie: No not really the first album was awesome but we knew we had gotten better and were ready to take the next step. We have been touring for the last five years and to finally make a new record was a huge relief for us. We are ready to show the music world that Incite is for real and hear to stay. We're not just a gimmick, or a max project or anything like that. We take this very seriously and try to just enjoy what we do and not let outside issues distract us from our goals. I thrive on pressure and feel I do my best when challenged.
8. What inspired the album title? Is it a concept album?
Richie: Not a concept but it explains all the songs very well. Declaring war on everything. Haters, life, jobs, debt, all the BS that life consist of. The title was a summary of all the lyrics. I think it was the perfect title.
9. How has the band’s sound evolved from The Slaughter to All Out War?
Richie: I think we have all gotten better at our crafts, so I think it's more mature and more grown up. We really cared about the sound of AOW and wanted to focus on how songs ended and began. We have been through hell over the last five years and I think this album shows that. We have all become more professional about the music and the band and really try to create kick as music. When you are just starting nothing matters you just want to play. Now you want things to be perfect. We defiantly take things way more seriously, which is cool.
10. What are your expectations for the CD?
Richie: I hope people give it the credit it deserves. I'm a music fan before anything and I personally love the new record. I think people will too they just need to get there hands on it and hear it. I want people to enjoy it when times are tough and when times are good. Oh yeah and to sell 10 million world wide haha...
11. How do you describe your music to people?
Richie: I tell them its a fresh breathe of old school metal air no pussy vocals and chest pounding music.
12. What image do you think your music conveys?
Richie: Probably all bad but you know what that's life... life is not a Beyonce song it's real, it's hard, and it doesn't let up so I think it conveys truth...
13. What are your upcoming tour plans?
Richie: We have a 2013 North American tour in February through April then off to Europe for the summer from there we're hoping over to Australia, then South America...so it's looking nice and busy!
14. Which member would win in a head-banging contest?
Richie: I'd say Gene or I. During shows I only stop when yelling ...we are constantly looking at each other during shows to see who quits first usually me cause I smoke.
15. What is your favorite style of head banging to perform?
Richie: I prefer the wind mill or as my friends call it the bird flap.
16. How many band t-shirts are in your collection?
Richie: I have probably 3 a 1989 Motörhead shirt, 1992 Obituary shirt, and a Cannibal Corpse shirt. I'm mostly a plain black tee guy.
17. If you could take one of your songs and turn it into a pop, rap, or country version how would it sound?
Richie: Probably die with what you've done. It's so weak I think I hate that song so it deserves to be a pop hit.
18. Incite is one of those bands you do not want to fuck with yes or no?
Richie: Not at all just bring the goodies and its all good.
