Hailing from the same state that other infamous acts have been born from; August Burns Red, Texas In July, and even This Or The Apocalypse, how much pressure can one more band take? Perhaps not much at all. Taking confidence in stride My Heart To Fear intend to take control of their own ground and sound. Having had released an EP "Lost Between Brilliance and Insanity", the band is set to continue writing even heavier material that's more intense and in your face than ever before taking them to a whole new level. Frontman vocalist Trevor Pool discussed this EP and plans they got in-store.
1. What type of band are you?
Trevor: My Heart to Fear is a metal band comprised of 5 Best friends
that believe in God, hard work, respect and love for anyone under any ideology,
and being real with people.
2. Tell us the brief history of your band.
2. Tell us the brief history of your band.
Trevor: Well, we started as a band 7 and a half years ago in Luke (our drummer) garage. Taylor (bassist) met Luke in a high school art class, and
we already knew our friend Brandon who became our guitarist. We played shows
under the name “Tearbook” until we met dale (lead guitarist) at the little
league world series and asked him to be in the band. Brandon quit in 2010 and
Jay joined the band to replace him. We honestly just grew up, put in some hard
work, kept our hearts in check, and never forgot who were doing this for.
3. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Trevor: Our name comes from the hymn “Amazing Grace” where it says: ”Twas grace that taught my heart to fear”.
4. Who are your musical influences?
Trevor: It really is a wide variety, I myself really enjoy artists such as Brand New, Frank Sinatra, Eminem, Good Luck
Varsity, etc.
5. Tell me where the title "Lost Between Brilliance and Insanity" came from and what does it symbolize?
5. Tell me where the title "Lost Between Brilliance and Insanity" came from and what does it symbolize?
Trevor: When you are writing music you may think that what you have
written is super fantastic, but someone can come along and tell you how much it
sucks. It just makes you question if you are truly the artist you hope you are
(brilliant), or just a guy that got lucky a few times and just thinks way too
highly of himself (insane).
6. What are your songs about? What specific themes do they
cover?
Trevor: I am so stoked that you asked this question. Especially on our new album we just want to strip away the filters and write songs about whatever want. Some songs are pure angst and feeling, some are made-up stories that have underlying messages; There’s anything from songs explaining why suffering exists, to my experiences with demonic summoning.
7. Do you write your own songs? Can you discuss the
songwriting process in detail.
Trevor: We do write 100% of our songs and lyrics, and it starts with
cramming all of our computer equipment into our practice room. The
guitarists/bassist start writing basic structural ideas on a program called
“tabit”. After about 3 months of jamming and tabbing, the basic songs are done enough
for me to write lyrics to. I take their songs and put them on my laptop and
just listen to them until I come up with some emotionally corresponding lyrics.
Revisions to the songs are then made both lyrically and instrumentally until
the whole band feels that the songs are as good as they can be. Luke then comes
around in the end and shows us what drum parts he would like to see change.
After that it’s a LOT of practice and then the studio.
8. What's the music scene like in Williamsport, PA?
Trevor: Not too bad, there really aren't any music venues here other than a few spots which typically let kids host shows now and then. The friends and fans we have are super awesome though! It’s a super great place to play a show if you can get one there.
9. Can you discuss the artwork and what it represents?
Trevor: Well we didn't really have a large time window to come up
with a great concept for the artwork, so we contacted Ryan Clark (Demon
hunter’s vocalist) and just asked him to make us some beautiful artwork and we
love what he did! His group that he works with for the art was called
“Invisible Creature”.
10. You’re signed with record label, Solid State Records how
does this make you feel?
Trevor: Like God has truly blessed our band. Like all the hard work, jobs at fast food joints, college dropping…..just feels like it all paid off. It’s a WHOLE new chapter for a band. Being signed is a whole different world than being an indie band with nothing but some 8 year old equipment and a basement in the middle of the woods.
11. How would you describe the overall sound of it?
Trevor: If you are talking about the EP, then id say diverse,
progressive, and fast.
12. Did the band have any definitive goals they were
shooting for before the recording process began?
Trevor: Well the songs on the EP are
just re-mastered by (Jason Suecoff – Audiohammer) from our indie released LP
entitled “Into the Maelstrom”, but when we recorded that album with (Dave Cutrone –
Yukonotron)so our goals were to just make the heaviest and best album we've made
yet, and it got us signed so we feel pretty happy about it for sure!
13. Are you using any new instrumentation you've never used
in the recording process before?
Trevor: For this next record we are recording this
month, we are using MANY instruments we have never used before, including (but
not limited to): Banjo, cello, violin, flute, trumpets, and many more!
14. When did you start writing for this release?
Trevor: For our recent EP we wrote those songs between summer 2010
and September 2011. For our upcoming LP we started writing late march of 2012
and wrote straight through to January 2013.
15. Can you go into one or two tracks on this release? If
so, can you give us the track title and brief description of how the track
sounds and how it came about?
Trevor: Well, I can’t really go into details with the LP, but with
the EP two of my favorite songs are Legends Never Die and The Witching Hour.
Legends was written as more of a anthem-flavored song, if you will. It just
describes how we feel about each other as a best friends in MHTF, and how
everyone is welcome to be a part of our brotherhood. The witching hour was a
song I wrote based off of an experiment I did with witchcraft and duality
principle.
16. What are your expectations for this release?
Trevor: The EP has done great so far! We have had great support from
it and hope people continue to listen and buy it! As for the LP, all I can say
is that it is truly something none of us have ever heard before.
17. Your plans for 2013 are what?
Release the LP, tour, hopefully expand our brotherhood all
over the world!
18. Anything else you want to say or add?
Trevor: Don’t judge a band based off of what you heard about them, their beliefs, or reviews. Read their lyrics and listen to their music! Come to a show and meet them! And even if you don’t agree with a band’s lyrics, let the music bring us together! Thank you so much for all the support from family, friends, and fans. We love you all!
