Dead Aeon's Jack Penders Talks EP and More

Ireland metalheads Dead Aeon formed in 2008 since their formation they went on to release their debut EP and have so much more on the way! Vocalist Jack Penders discuss these matters.

1. Give me a back story on the band/ band biography?

Dead Aeon originally began as a cover band under a different name and a slightly different line up. Doing covers of bands such as Rage Against The Machine, Tool and System Of A Down, we progressively got heavier. With that the line up eventually changed to what it is now. Although still a cover band, we were now covering bands such as Decapitated, Behemoth and Gojira, who are still some of our biggest influences. After establishing ourselves as a band that could pull of covers well, we started writing our own music, which took the form of blackened death metal. Today, the band is everything each member wanted it to be musically and we are immensely proud of our work.

2. How did you guys come up with your band name?

Jack: The name Dead Aeon was suggested by our drummer, Evan. After a lot of trial and error with different titles, we thought Dead Aeon was a very suitable name for us, as it reflects the dark, ominous feel of our music.

3. What type of band are you?

Jack: We are a mix of death metal and black metal. While we have the power and groove of death metal, we also incorporate the atmospheric, dark feel of black metal into our music. We are in the same vein of bands like Behemoth and Hate.

4. Can you tell me about your album Apotheosis?

Jack: Apotheosis came about due to the band splitting. After we had split, we all felt the songs we had written deserved recorded, as we were all very proud of them. As the the album got closer to completion and we started gigging again we decided to continue as Dead Aeon. The recording process was amazing. It was our first time  in the studio (Trackmix Studio, Dublin) and because of our producer Michael Richards, the album sounds better than we could ever have imagined. The album contains five songs and is 30 minutes in length. It can be ordered from us at our Facebook page.

5. This was a self-release do you hope to one day get signed to a label, if so what do you hope to accomplish by this?

Jack: We would love to get signed, start touring and getting our music out there. Because of the internet it's easy to share your music but very hard to actually get it listened to. If we were signed we would hope to increase our fan base and start touring in different parts of the world.

6. Do you have any plans for new music like another EP or work on your debut full-length?

Jack: We are currently writing what will eventually become our first full-length which we hope to start recording next year. We have already played one of the new tracks which received great reception from the crowd.

7. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

Jack: Our primary lyrical theme is about questioning. That branches into sub-themes such as religion and the government. The overall message we try to send is to open your mind and your eyes. To see things in a logical, realistic manner and to not just accept things. The expansion of the mind basically.

8. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

Jack: Each member of the band has their individual influences but collectively our biggest influences would be the likes of Decapitated, Behemoth, Gojira, Meshuggah and the like. Were very influenced by the polish metal scene in particular.

9. What made you guys decide to form a band?

Jack: For the love of music in general. We didnt come together to write or play a specific genre, we just played what we enjoyed and wrote what came out naturally.

10. Tell me about the two videos you have out for "Rise to Power" and "Mass Culture Theory" and their concepts.

Jack: The two videos were to give the listener something else other than just a song. They were both directed by our very good friend Emmet Kiernan, who we will be working with in the near and foreseeable future. The video for Rise To Power was the first time we had released a full song and it got a great response and continues to grow in views daily. As does the video for Mass Culture Theory. That video was shot from a selection of shows we played in The Pint, Dublin. The videos have done wonders for us, publicity wise and we are very greatful to have Emmet on our side, he has become the 5th member in a way!

11. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

Jack: A lot of new shows, a video or two and definitely some new material.

12. What are your dreams and goals?

Jack: In a way we have already achieved our dreams, of playing the songs we have written to people who enjoy them. Our goals in the next year or two is to play abroad. We are looking at maybe doing a few shows in mainland UK next year. We are also in with a chance to play Wacken Open Air in Germany this year as we are in the  semifinals for the Wacken Metal Battle in Ireland.

13. Describe your show, visual and musically for us.

Jack: We are always commended for our stage presence and performance. We never go onstage without the mindset of giving it our all for every show. We play each show like we are playing to thousands of people, even if we are only playing to dozens. It's a great mindset to have as stage presence can really make or break a band. We also strive for musical perfection when it comes to playing live. We rehearse as much as possible and are all perfectionists when it comes to our individual playing and the band as a whole.

14. How do you promote your band and shows?

Jack: Predominantly we use the internet for promotion. Things like Facebook and YouTube have been a huge help when it comes to promotion for us. Word of mouth is also a great thing to have on our side. In Ireland, particularly in Dublin, the metal scene is very strong and close knit. Every band  is willing to help the next and it is full of respect. I have no doubt that we would not be where we are today if it wasn't for the support of the Irish metal scene.

15. What inspires you to do what you do?

Jack: The absolute love of it. We aren't in this band to make money or become famous. We do this because it is exactly what we want to do. We are extremely proud of what we have accomplished in the past few years.

16. What advice would you give to fellow bands?

Jack: Make as many connections as you can. What I've learned from managing this band is the more people you know, the more opportunities you will have in future. We are very lucky to have great promoters and publicists on our side. If you have the right connections it can slingshot your band into places you never thought you could be.

17. How does music affect you and the world around you?

Jack: For me personally, music is constant. It's always there in some form or another. I was lucky to be brought up with music playing on a regular basis and it has shaped me into the person I am today. I'm very pleased and proud to be able to contribute to music and it's an amazing art form to produce.
