Eyes On Tomorrow consists of veteran members of the Cincinnati music community: Aaron Hendrix-Bass, Daniel Kannady-Guitar, Dave Kevorkian-Guitar, Josh Hurt-Vocals, Sam Hain-Drums. This explosive lineup is fueled by raw emotion and determination. Drummer Sam Hain talks about the band and their music with us.
1.Can i get a backstory on the band/ band biography?
Sam: This band was a long time in the making. We have all known each other for years. We have been in several bands together at points (some of us) but never in this particular combination. The short story is Sam and Daniel have been jamming together for the last 4 1/2 years, for most of it they were struggling as "The Suicide Lullaby".. always on the look out for dedicated band members. After we solidified our current line up we decided the old name was too established in a certain "genre" and wanted a fresh name, with no baggage. We decided on Eyes On Tomorrow because we are always looking into the future, creating and anticipating new musical opportunities. Less than 1 year as a working band and we have been happy with not only what we've accomplished, but the direction we are headed in as well. If you want the extended 10 year back story... let us know.
2. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?
Sam: We try to write about things that amuse us, things that are personal, things that are brutal... basically what ever we want. We don't try to anticipate the the next big trend, or ride the coat tails of the current trend. We just write the stuff we enjoy playing... lyrically and musically.
3. How have the gigs you guys been doing been?
Sam: Like any band... some are insanely awesome, and others are us playing in front of nobody... Hit and miss... Since we are not a very established band, we are still working really hard to be heard. I will say this much, with new contacts and the work we have put in, things will be picking up. We have a ton of stuff coming up after our CD release next week. We are just taking every thing one step at a time.
4. What equipment do you guys use?
Sam: Any thing that actually works... We have our preferences, but aren't sponsored or anything like that.
5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?
Sam: That is far too broad of a question. We are 5 guys from very different musical backgrounds. The only thread we all share is we love metal. Some of us like the same bands, but all for different reasons. The simplest answer is.. there is no simple answer. We really feel like this is the reason we work so well together. Mutual respect and admiration of everyone that brought us to where we are as musicians.
6. Do you remember your first show as Eyes On Tomorrow and what was it like?
Sam: Awesome. It was last May.. We always (with others on the cincy music scene in years past) put on The Reading Metal Fest in late spring... It only gets better every year we do it. Last year we did our debut show, and played in front of 200 people. The event last all day with 10 bands...our drummer is the driving force behind it. So not only does he play an endurance set on the drums, but organizes and executes the whole event. It was a great opportunity for us to hit the ground running. So though we were ready a few months prior, we waited for the proper moment to play out for the first time.
7.What made you guys decide to form a band?
Sam: All of us have been in bands for 10+ years. After much disappointment with past bands, we all decided it was too early to give up... So here we are.
8.What is your opinion on sites posting your guys material and other bands material?
Sam: SHARE SHARE SHARE.... we love it... help us be heard. As far as other bands?? I guess if they are losing more money with people promoting them for free then they must be doing much better financially than we are. That is a problem we would love to have.
9. You've released some songs online, but what's new in the recording your music, when can we expect to see a EP or full-length release?
Sam: Our six song EP will be released this Friday.. It will be available on iTunes and 20 other reputable music distribution sites the day after... But we shall not rest... we have 4 more songs ready to record and 2 more in the writing process. We will have a full length album ready by this time next year, at the latest.
10. How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? like deathcore, metalcore and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.
Sam: Metal "sub-genres"?? Combine them how ever you want... The good bands are good... They do metal justice in any classification. Same can be said on the opposite end of the spectrum. The worst bands make the ignorant think all metal is that bad... Its a double edged sword. We aren't big fans of the sub classification. You either write good music or you don't.
11. What song do you enjoy playing the most?
Sam: Wow... the easiest answer really is "all of them"
12. When not doing things with the band, what can you guys be seen doing?
Sam: Practicing, working, and practicing.
13.Your biggest band moment?
Sam: Not sure if you are from cincy, but we played the WEBN fireworks last year after being a band less than 5 months.. Wasn't the greatest show (weather wasn't on our side) but it got us noticed. For sure a turning point for the better.
14. What is your opinion on the current state of metal?
Sam: More please.
15. How did you guys come up with your band name?
Sam: Our guitarist thought of it. It sucked less than the other options. Seriously, it just describes our over all out look on the future...
16. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?
Sam: Us having fun doing what we love... Making music, and playing live... 2 people or 2000 we will bring the same energy to every audience. I hope these were sufficient answers. If you have any others, or would like us to help in any way possible, please let us know. Thanks
