Kings & Kerosene is a new and upcoming rock export hailing from Joensuu, Finland. Our music is a mixture of big stadium rock and dirty punk rock - a creation of our twisted imaginations. In 2012 Kings & Kerosene released a self-titled EP and now have a full-length debut entitled the "Liquid Soundtrack" it features the hit singles "Soul Alone", and "Problem Child" and these guys are just getting things started with so much in-store! Guitarist Tommi Vatanen discusses their latest release and much more.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Tommi: Kings & Kerosene was officially formed in 2011, when our guitarist Tuomo joined the band. Before that Jarkko, Me, Tuomas and Juuso had been jamming and creating the songs for the debut EP since the year 2010.
2. What type of band are you?
Tommi: Most importantly we are a rock band. It was our main intention and goal when we started and it's something we want to be consistent with.
3. How did you guys come up with your band name?
Tommi: "Kings & Kerosene" basically represents our band's two sides: the dirty punk rock influence and on the other hand the more glamorous "stadium rock" vibe. Of course coming up with the name was a pain in the ass.
4. How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?
Tommi: Like in the previous question, the most important style we want to be associated with is "ROCK" but of course our music has different vibes to it since all of the members have different musical backgrounds and influences from metal to pop.
5. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?
Tommi: I can't speak for Dewey, but the lyrics usually concentrate on human feelings and relationships. There's some personal experiences and then there's some more "abstract" messages.
6. Who writes the songs, what are they about?
Tommi: It's either me or Tuomo who come up with the basic demo structure or idea of a song and then the other guys bring in their finishing touches to create the final versions.
7. Who is producing the album? How has the producer aided the recording process?
Tommi: Our guitarist produced, mixed and mastered. This way we had a lot more control over the recording process than with an outsider
8. Where did you record the album?
Tommi: We recorded most of the album in Sipoo at Tuomo's parent's summer cottage and the rest of the stuff in Joensuu at our practise space.
9. What label will be releasing the album?
Tommi: At the moment we are unsigned.
10. How would you describe the overall sound of the new album?
Tommi: The album is definitely more modern and darker than our debut EP. It has a wide range of different kinds of songs and each song has a totally different vibe.
11. Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this album?
Tommi: We just wanted to create something that we would be proud of. We succeeded in that!
12. Are you using any new instrumentation you've never used in the recording process before?
Tommi: There's some electronic instruments that were added in the mixing process. I think they create a sound that is a lot more fuller.
13. When did you start writing for this album?
Tommi: The writing process started straight after we released our first EP. One of the songs from that record called "Any Day" is also going to be on the new album. Interesting fact: I don't wanna fall's main riff was actually one of the first riffs I ever wrote for this band.
14. Can you discuss the two singles "Soul Alone" and "Problem Child". Giving us a brief description of how the track sounds and how it came about?
Tommi: Soul Alone has a darker and heavier feel than our earlier songs. At the same time the verses and pre-choruses show a calm side of us.
Problem Child is has a fun, maybe even a bit twisted main riff and the song evolves into a grooving rock song in the end.
15. How was the vibe in the studio?
Tommi: At the same time it was really fun, exciting and tiring. Doing everything by ourselves can get difficult at times.
16. You decided to call the album, Liquid Soundtrack, what does this title mean and is it a concept release?
Tommi: It's a somewhat of a concept album. When you are listening to the album, it's basically like listening to this fictional radio station called "Liquid FM". We even have tracks with a "radio dj" on them.
17. Who designed the album artwork for it, what does the artwork represent?
Tommi: I did the album artwork. It represents the whole "LIQUID FM" concept of the album.
18. What plans do you have for the near future as a band?
Tommi: Lots of gigs. Music videos and hopefully collaborations with promotional agents and labels. Thank you for the interview and thank you to the readers!
