Deep inside America’s undercurrents, you’re likely to find the music of Living Dead Lights fixating on the pulse of a rising generation. When this multi-cultural group joined forces, the result was pure, raw and dangerous. Beneath the music lies the unapologetic struggle of four artists grappling with the challenges of modern day life. Each gritty, guitar driven song has captured the imagination of thousands of disaffected youths across the globe and there appears to be no stopping them. With that, they went on to record and release music including a self-titled EP and have an upcoming full-length debut out soon. Guitarist Alan Damien discusses the band's full-length debut!
1. So what can you tell me about the new album?
Alan: Well the new album is definitely more evolved, its darker, heavier, nastier, yet beautiful at the same time.
2. What title did you decide to go with it and is there a meaning behind it?
Alan: Well we can't quite tell you what the album title is yet. But the concept is deep. When we get closer to the release we'll drop the name. We're really excited about the artwork too and you'll see why soon.
3. Is this album going to be a concept release?
Alan: Yeah you could say that! We touch on a few subjects, life, death, psychological problems, love and loss, our views on life to how the world should be. The messages are definitely dark but within it we wanted to have elements of hope and ideas of how to evolve thru life for yourself. Not everything is doom and gloom as Martin would say.
4. How did the vibe in the studio go?
Alan: Making the record was exciting we were really able to do anything we wanted and the songs really lent to the production ideas too. David Spreng is an animal and really spent the extra time to help us make this record what it should be.
5. Who is producing the album? How has the producer aided the recording process?
Alan: Fred Archambault produced and mixed it. He also mixed our EP. Fred is always filled with good ideas. We demo'd out some songs with him about a year before so it's given us time to develop them right . He's been involved with the band for a while now, and has really helped open our eyes to some solid production ideas and some better arrangement that have really benefited the songs.
6. Where did you record the album?
Alan: The hobby shop.
7. Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this album?
Alan: Well we came into it knowing we had some really good songs. And we knew if they were done right it could really be something. We wanted to keep it nasty of course. While still maintaining the point and that's keeping the integrity of the song. But that aside we wanted to explore all the things we couldn't previously do before we had a budget. The best thing about the album is that I feel we made art. It's not just some rock record don't get me wrong the record is heavy it's nasty and mean but there's even elements of bands like pink Floyd and the Beatles too. I feel like we made a record with a point to it a purpose. Something in my opinion that has been missing in rock n roll for a long long time.
8. Are you using any new instrumentation you've never used in the recording process before?
Alan: There's all kinds of new fun shit we got to play with on the album.
9. When did you start writing for this album? How was the songwriting process different/similar to previous Living Dead Lights releases?
Alan: There are a few songs on the record that were originally written back in the conception of the band at the time; they were a bit different than everything else that we were doing but we feel they really fit the attitude of all the new songs we wrote and balance out the record. The songwriting process is generally the same as it's always been we're just a lot better at what we do now and much more efficient. We've had time to grow as a band and it's really helped the chemistry of the songwriting.
10. Did you feel any pressure to follow it up?
Alan: Not really I really look forward to touring the shit out of this record and when the time comes to record the follow up, that'll just be an opportunity for us to create new art. Sure I'd like to do something that has some new elements in it. It's fun to challenge myself. And I never look at different songs, as a competition between each other, they exist because they need to exist. Even if it's just to balance out our set or the quality of the record. I know the band feels the same way too but if we weren't 100% behind a song we wouldn't release it. Every song pretty much has a different purpose for us whether it's the energy of it or the story behind it.
11. Can you go into one or two tracks on the new album? If so, can you give us the track title and brief description of how the track sounds and how it came about?
Alan: I'm not going to release titles yet but there's a few songs on the record that we played live on our last tour. I think our fans will recognize a few.
12. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?
Alan: Basically the lyrics are the point behind the songs. They are a lot deeper and more evolved than anything I've ever written - I really wanted to write lyrics with a point to it. I like to write songs that have elements of hope in them or make you think about life. I want people to see what's really happening in the world or at least give them a different perspective on life; I feel like most artists miss their opportunity to put a good message out there. It's sad but most people that are put in a position to do something for the world squander their opportunity or just use it for bad.
13. The Living Dead Lights logo has changed a bit over the years has it changed again or will you be using one of the old logos?
Alan: Much like the songs the art work and band imagery has also come full circle as well.. You might see some familiar things and you're definitely going to see some new things too. I think when people see the album artwork and some of the new pieces we've been doing they will really understand how everything ties in together. Everything is really one thing, one message, just one Idea.
14. When can we expect the new album to be released?
Alan: It'll be out this summer.
15. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?
Alan: We have a video for our new single that's about to come out soon. And as soon as the record releases we will be doing a full world tour to support it, Europe, America , Asia , South America, Canada etc.
16. Is that your final answer?
Alan: We're just getting this party started!
