Blood Red Throne is the death metal sense that has hit the metal community heavy and hard. Over the course of their careers they have released album after album and are now on their seventh album to date that they decided to self-titled. Guitarist, song writer, founder, and only original member left in the band Daniel Olaisen or Død took the time to discuss the band's latest efforts since our last chat with the band back in 2009.
1. Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Blood Red Throne, and how long the band has been together.
Død: Cheers. This is Død. Guitarist, songwriter, founder and only original member left in Blood Red Throne. I started BRT back in 1998 and we just released our 7th album.
2. How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?
Død: Death metal. All great bands inspire me, but there's no doubt that the US death metal scene inspired me a lot in the 90's.
3. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?
Død: Basically to explain and understand evil, but also be your own master. We question a lot about religion and the madness going on in the world.
4. It's been 4 years since we last spoke can you give me a brief summary as to what the band has been up too? Last time we had talked about your album "Come Death".
Død: Well, Souls of Damnation was released in 2009, Brutalitarian Regime in 2011 and now we have a new album. We did two major tours in the US/Canada in 2010 and 2011. We did a European tour with Suffocation in 2012. We played Hellfest 2012. And at the end of 2012 we did our first headliner tour in Norway. Now, we're up for a headliner tour in Europe and several summer festivals. So, we'been pretty busy!
5. With your new album you decided to go Self-Titled. Do you feel that's a big statement? Band's tend to name their albums self-titled when they feel it's indicative of the sound they've been trying to craft. Do you feel this is the sound you've been trying to achieve with the band?
Død: BRT is celebrating their 15th anniversary this year. I had a clear vision for the album cover of this mighty and blood-drenched throne. There could be no other title!
6. How did the writing process differ this time around as opposed to the past?
Død: Not much to be honest. I still write most of the music, but Meathook contributed with two great tracks this time.
7. Lyrically, do you think this album has a different feel because of where you all are in this point in your lives?
Død: Well, introducing a new singer on this album, surely brings a different approach lyric wise. It's still about religion and evil and trying to understand and explain the madness in this fucked up world.
8. Who produced this album and what was it like working with them?
Død: The bass player of my other band, Zerozonic, mixed and mastered the album. He's very talented and knows how to capture the sound we want!
9. Who did the cover artwork and how much input did you have on it?
Død: Rafael Tavares from Brazil. I had the concept for the front cover, but Rafael made it all and he nailed it.
10. Tell me about your video/song for the song "Primitive Killing Machine".
Død: Well, I specifically wrote this as I knew it would be the video song. It's very catchy and among the slower songs on the album. A perfect groove throughout the song and some bad-ass riffs.
11. Has Blood Red Throne ever played in the States or plan to do so in the future? What are your upcoming touring and show plans?
Død: We toured the whole US and Canada in 2010 with Dimmu Borgir and Enslaved. In 2011, we did it all over again with Grave. We'd love to come back and we have many us fans. We hope to return in 2014. Now, we have an upcoming headliner tour in Europe, a mini your in the UK and several summer festivals.
12. What is your opinion on sites posting your guys material and other bands material?
Død: It's inevitable. However, most bands put out their music on iTunes, Spotify and Wimp, so I can understand why someone has to upload it elsewhere. Personally, I'm old school and have been collecting CD's since 1993. I will never stop.
13. How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? like death metal, metalcore and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.
Død: Well, we DO play death metal and that's the way it is. I guess it's necessary to label all the zillion types of metal anyway.
14. What is your opinion on the current state of metal?
Død: I think it's great that more people acknowledge this genre and see us as professional musicians. At least some of us, hehe. But there's no doubt about it that there are too many metal bands. And too many
crappy metal bands. But who am I to judge...
15. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?
Død: We have a lot of gigs ahead, so get your ass out there and have a good time with BRT.
16. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Død: A bunch of places, hehe. Live in your hometown. Buy our CD's and listen. Facebook, soundcloud, iTunes, Spotify, Wimp. You name it. The albums should be available worldwide. They can also be ordered from Sevared Records. There's a limited vinyl box this time. including a t-shirt exclusively, signed poster and several other items. Can be ordered from bloodredthrone.bandcamp.com.
17. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Død: The power, the groove and the killer songs.
18. Any final words of wisdom?
Død: Only death metal is real!
