Mexico metal thrashers P4r4s1t0 have been playing showcases, writing material, recording that
material, and have it all coming at you on their upcoming new release. Guitarist Borrego himself takes the time to talk of the new material and other band activity.
1. Can you introduce yourself, tell me what you do in the band, and can I have a brief summary as to how the band came together?
Borrego: I’m Borrego the guitar player of the band; I’m the one that wrote all the music and lyrics so far. The band came together on August/September 2012 after I received the news that we where the opening act for the band Molotov, by that time I had the EP “Contra Todo” finished, Danny (singer) already recorded is voice on the EP, but I didn’t have a drummer or bass player, I had to get them just a few weeks before the gig, I called and old friend (Almendra bass) and he invited a drummer that he was playing with for the last 10 year (Chato) and that’s how I put the band together.
2. What type of band are you guys, where are you guys from, and what is the music scene like there?
Borrego: A lot of people say that we play power-metal or trash-metal but I like to call ourselves just like a metal band. The scene down here in México City it’s really bad, there’s not a lot of good places to play and a lot of times the bands we play with are not the nicest ones with us.
3. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Borrego: The P4r4s1t0 songs so far are based on my experiences in life and the things that I see around me, we have a song against the church (De la Iglesia) that talks about all the bad stuff that I’ve seen over the years that the Church do wrong, we have one about politicians and the people that sit down on their asses and think that a change of power it’s going to solve everything and they don’t do anything, stuff like that, we pretty much write about everything that goes on around us.
4. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
Borrego: Yes we do write our own songs, usually I write some guitar riffs and when I’m comfortable with the structure of one song I think about the drums and I lay some drum ideas for the drummer to develop, after that Chato (drummer) lay down the drum tracks and then Almendra (bass) and when all the music it’s ready I usually have some lyrics already written, or I write it at the moment, and with the singer we decided the melody and choose the lyrics that will stay in the song, I mix the song and then we rehearse and get the new song ready for the shows.
5. Who are your musical influences?
Borrego: Probably the main influence in the music that I write is Pantera, I also had some influences from bands like Korn, At The Gates, Snot, Meshuggah. I listen a lot of music and I try to combine all the different types of metal that I like and sometimes stuff that it’s not metal but helps me a lot.
6. Your latest EP Contra Todo is the first EP for you guys and you'd like to release an EP every year, can you tell me why you want to do this?
Borrego: We would like to release an EP every year because, as still fans of some bands, we would love to have some new material every year from the bands we like instead of waiting 2, 3 or 5 year for a new full album, that’s why we want to release at least 3 or 4 songs every year for our fans and the people that likes the band.
7. How's the new EP coming along and when can we expect it to be released?
Borrego: The new EP it’s not coming as smooth as I want it because I had to dispose a few songs that I had for the new EP. This was because I finished one song and the other wasn’t like at the same level, they where good, but not good enough for our fans. But now I have the parameter to keep writing for the new one and it’s going to be amazing!!!!
8. You mentioned that your band wears masks can you tell me why you choose to use this image for your band?
Borrego: First of all I want it to create a full concept around the band instead of just getting some guys together and play, I’ve seen a lot of bands down here in México that I guess they don’t ever think that a lot of times people don’t want to hear just music, they want a show, you know? And there are a lot of great bands out there, but there are not a lot of great shows live. Other thing that makes us think about the masks is that we’ve been playing for a few years with several kinds of known bands and we don’t want the band to be liked because of what we’ve done in the past with other bands, we want people to like P4r4s1t0 for what it is and how it sounds.
9. How do you promote your band and shows?
Borrego: We just signed with a Booking & Management company called Maloik (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Maloik-Booking-Management/219446344735598) right now they’re taking care of booking us shows, but we’re still on the “underground” scene booking the shows ourselves.
10. Can you describe your show, visual and musically for us?
Borrego: Well, as is told you before we care a lot about the show and we always give our best every time we play, there’s a joke we have that was triggered by the fact that we can’t see much with the masks so what we always say is that we always play for like at least 2000 people ha, some bands don’t always deliver the same show, if they see 100 you’re getting a good show, if there’s 20 you won’t, so our show it’s full of energy every time and we always kind of steal the other bands fans every time we play, because the people loves our show.
11. What's the best and worst thing about playing clubs?
Borrego: We’ll, there’s always nice to play at clubs because you’re closer to the people and I think the energy its way different than a big show, but the bad thing is that usually the clubs don’t have like great gear or PA and sometimes we can’t give the people the quality show they deserve.
12. Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
Borrego: Right now we have 3 confirmed shows in Mexico City and a couple appearances on Internet TV, but our booking company (Maloik) it’s working to set up some gigs in the States (Detroit, Chicago and Milwaukee) for this summer, so follow us on the social networks so you can be there, it’s going to be your change to watch a real Mexican Metal band!!!! Haha
13. What are your dreams and goals?
Borrego: Our dream is to get our music played in every corner of the world and play live for as many people as we can, I think that music can always make a difference on people life’s and that why do it, to make a difference and share with other people how we feel and how we see things on this part of the world.
14. What are the biggest obstacles for bands?
Borrego: Big corporations (Record Labels) and sometimes the people it self, what append a lot to us down here is that the big corporations always use for opening acts or to festivals to bands that have money or some kind of connections and they never care about the quality of the music and sometimes the people is the problem, they’re willing to pay any money to watch a big band but they don’t go to a local club to support a local band, those are probably the biggest obstacles for bands, so support your local bands!!!!
15. What advice would you give to fellow bands?
Borrego: Just don’t give up and keep trying, work your way up and never forget about the music, you may found some record labels or people that want to invest on you, but remember, it’s all about the music and how you want to express yourself, never sellout and don’t let people tell you how to do your music.
