Death metal/hardcore act Seven Second Suicide took sometime to discuss their debut EP "Crimson Tie" due out this summer along with some new shows for the summertime as well. Guitarist Sachem Orenda and vocalist JxRx are those who talk of these matters.
1. What type of band are you guys?
As far as genre goes, we consider ourselves Deathcore with hints of electro/industrial.
2. Where is the band from?
We all live in the greater Allentown area at present, but Leo is originally from somewhere in Kentucky and Sachem is from Pittsburgh.
3. How did the band get it's name?
Guitarist, Aaron Richardson, moved into a house at the address: 7 Second St. Shortly after settling in to his new home, he was informed that a teenage girl committed suicide in his bedroom. Suicide at 7 Second became reiterated as Seven Second Suicide.
4. Do you write your own songs, what are your songs about?
We do write all of our music. Aaron is the head composer, Sachem being secondary. Aaron penned two of our songs lyrically but singer JxRx does most of the lyrics. From the words of JxRx: When I'm writing for us I like to listen to the song, and feel out what the concept should be. I usually like to sing about despair, revenge, monsters things that are dark. Or since I put a lot of for lack of a better word "faith" haha into the Satanic philosophies I also enjoy writing about embracing life because lifeии is fucking amazing!
5. Who are some of your musical influences?
Aaron - David Gilmore, Jared Leto, Between the Buried and Me.
JxRx - Chuck Schuldiner, Joseph Bruce, Marilyn Manson.
Leo - Aaron Gillespie, Matt Greiner, WhiteChapel.
Sachem - Raymond Watts, John Cage, Peter Chung.
6. Tell me how come your frontman has weird eyes in the band's photos and videos?
JxRx becomes a living metaphor for his belief that half the world is blind to truth.
7. Who is all in the band and who does what?
JxRx - Vocals and Lyrics.
Aaron Richardson - Lead Guitarist, head composer, secondary vocalist, secondary lyricist.
Sachem Orenda - Secondary guitars, Keyboards/Synths/Electribe, secondary composer.
Leo Boisvert - Drums and all things percussion.
8. What are your dreams and goals?
We aim to release a full-length album that vastly stands out in the polluted sea of hardcore artists. Our ultimate goal is to tour outside of the USA.
9. Tell me about the song and video for "Filth".
Some critique the video as being a repeat of an age-old story, but I see it as a necessity for every generation to be exposed to these ugly scenarios.
From the words of JxRx: The song Filth was written about a past lover of mine who grew an addiction to heroin. When I was writing the song I wanted people to know that when you sell your body your mind pays the price, and that you truly are alone in this world when you betray everything you used to love just for a fix. I feel the video reflects the desperation and despair that one goes through with addiction.
10. Who did the cover art for Crimson Tie and how much input did you have on it?
Actually we have 100% input on it, but the cover isn't finished yet so that's a bit premature.
11. Is there any story or concept behind the Crimson Tie title?
I would rather not be too specific, but I'll say it's related to the blood and death that we embody on stage. It's also in the lyrics to the song Represser.
12. Who produced Crimson Tie and what was it like working with them?
Grant McFarland and Carson Slovak of Atrium Audio in Lancaster PA produced our E.P. They've worked with professional bands like August Burns Red. Honestly, it was a miraculous experience. Those guys are experts at what they do, and everyone that hears our recordings comments on the exceptional quality. We're looking forward to the possibility of working with them again in the future.
13. Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this EP?
We knew that we wanted to shop around for different labels so we didn't half-ass any of the work.
14. Are you using any new instrumentation you've never used in the recording process before?
This is our first official release, so I suppose the answer is no. I (Sachem) have been working with synthesizers for many years as a solo artist, but that is a new element for the other members. Sometimes the guys look at me like "man, I've never heard cool stuff like that", and other times they ask me to recreate a noise and I'll be like "ahhhhh I don't think you understand how complicated the art of synthesis really is. You can't just recreate any sound you imagine at will." So, on that level, it is a new experience of communication and possibility. I feel a lot of pressure on me to impress the other guys with modern electronic techniques on the fly.
15. When did you start writing for this EP?
Aaron and I met 2 years ago and were jamming on some immature songs with some other people. That group didn't click too well so Aaron and I separated from them. At this point we had about 3-4 songs that we wanted to keep. We revised them once Leo joined a little over a year ago.
16. Did you feel any pressure to do this release?
Yeah absolutely. There are millions of musicians out there. Recordings are only worth something to the world if they're incredibly galvanizing. We weren't doing this project for the fuck of it. We decided that we were ready for the top league of artists. When we heard the finished product, we all sort of looked at each other and said "damn, it's not a fantasy anymore. We really are one of the strongest new bands."
17. Can you go into one or two tracks on the new EP? If so, can you give us the track title and brief description of how the track sounds and how it came about?
From the words of JxRx: I'd like to go into the track Indulge since I kinda reference to it in question # 4. Aaron came up with the hook for the song witch gave us the concept for writing it. When he told me the hook started with raise your glass POW it hit me this song is going to be a toast to life itself. The song basically comes straight from the 9 satanic statements witch are about living life not taking shit and loving those who are most important in your life. I also dedicate it to the underground and independent music scene. Since I grew up in the punk scene I saw how everybody did everything D.I.Y. and always respected that so much, and that what Crimson Tie is A completely D.I.Y. release we did every thing on our own!
18. When can we expect the new EP to be released?
We are doing a release show at Planet Trog in Whitehall PA on June 1st. We will have hard copies at this time and the worldwide digital release will be near the end of June.
19. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?
Full US tour in the near future, more music videos, full-length album, and if all goes well - world tour in a year or two.
20. Is that your final answer?
The stage is our final answer. It's bloody, disgusting, and violent.
