Sirion is a melodic metal band founded in 2011 with musicians comprised across the US have brought their unique source of style and sound to a progressive shred that they have continued to cause havoc across the board especially across the California terrain. Guitarist Daniel Serper and bassist Joe Linahon discussed the band and what they have planned for this year.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
SIRION was started in Los Angeles, CA. Guitarist and founding member of the band Daniel Serper was born in Russia and raised until age 9, then moving to the Bay Area of Northern California, where he stayed until college and his move to LA. They met Robert Rosen, a keyboardist and synth player from age 12. Rosen first joined the band as a drummer.
The following year brought the addition of Biko Wright as vocalist, another Los Angeles local and practitioner of both heavy/death style vocals as well as clean singing, performing live since 16. His long time friend Joey Linahon soon took place playing bass, sharing lyrical responsibility with Biko. By 2011, Emilio had parted ways with the band and it was renamed SIRION. Rosen moved to playing keys/synth, percussion taken up by Andrew Bondor, a Seattle born drummer crafting his skills since ’99. The final member of the six piece, guitarist Alon Mei-Tal, came to the LA after a stay in Boston where he graduated from Berkeley School of Music in Performance Guitar.
2. How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?
Hard to say. Melodic thrash maybe? It's heavy but there are lots of melodies that are influenced by bands like Bodom and Amon Amarth. It's very "happy" and catchy, but we still want to make people bang their heads and go crazy in the pit. Heavy break downs are a constant but we make sure to open up wide ranges for vocals and harmonies.
3. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?
We in SIRION are big fans of science fiction and fantasy so that's reflected strongly in the lyrics. We like to write about times to come, hosting artificial intelligence and space travel but with some undertones of world issues. We touch on war, our dependence on fossil fuels, overpopulation, the degradation of corrupt society, and other problems we might have to face in the future. Some songs to bring up how we can conquer these problems, while others speak singularly of the issue or topic at hand. We have songs with stories to tell. Other times, there may not necessarily be a clear message, and we hope people will draw their own conclusions and find their own meaning.
4. You guys played a show at the Key Club before it's closing, how did that gig go and playing there for the last time?
SIRION were honored to have played that stage a few times. We're sad to see such a great venue go, especially in a time when it's getting more and more difficult for unsigned acts to get exposure. But for a last night of metal at the Key Club, the guys in Turisas and Firewind brought a great show in February of 2013. We had new songs and got a great response from the crowd. This was following a stint of awesome shows, including playing with Nekrogoblikon before their European tour and 3 Inches of Blood when they hit the US in late 2012.
5. Where are you in the recording process of the new EP?
Much of the first EP is written and ready to go. We are also working on new material with the goal of hitting a studio in the next few months.
6. Is this EP going to be a concept release?
While our lyrical content often speaks on similar realities or particular points of view, we plan displaying our musical style ad ability with the EP, while writing a real concept will wait for our first full album.
7. Who is producing the EP? How has the producer aided the recording process?
We have offers from a few talented friends and fans to help us with the EP and first album. Serper, Mei-Tal and Rosen will oversee final stages to ensure we bring the right sound out of the studio.
8. Where are you recording the EP?
Bass player Joey Linahon’s family studio near Pomona, CA.
9. Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this EP?
Finding the right sound for SIRION has been an important part of the process, as each member has their preferred style of metal. A few songs have been put aside to allow newer songs onto the EP.
10. When did you start writing for this EP? How was the songwriting process different/similar to previous Sirion releases?
This will be our first release, hosting songs written as early as 2011. Some were co-written while others are music solely from one member.
11. When can we expect the new EP to be released?
We are aiming for a finished and released product by autumn of 2013.
12. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?
We always have upcoming shows in and around Los Angeles and working to bring our fans and followers more. Music, merch, videos, all of the above!
