Unafraid of breaking the basic template of what has become one of the most saturated genres of music in the underground scene today, 6-piece Vegas locals I Before Giants approach the podium in confidence. While not letting their focus rest heavily on producing a vastly different sound, they find themselves landing somewhere comfortably in between both familiar and refreshing, pushing the boundaries of the genre itself entirely. Alongside their adventurous tonality, I Before Giants puts an immense effort in creating an aggressive, powerful, and energetic live performance, striving to recreate the same emotions imbued with their music. In Support of their debut EP "True North" , you can expect I Before Giants to make their way up the ranks in the Las Vegas music scene and continue to venture out across the world. Guitarist Cody Whaley discusses their latest single and process for a new EP in the works.
1. What type of band are you?
Cody: We are a progressive metal act.
2. Tell us the brief history of your band.
Cody: Originally known as Gallows Grace I Before Giants formed in 2010 gained and lost several members along the way. We released a demo in 2011 followed by our first produced ep "True North" in 2012. After parting ways with our screamer we progressed on with our new screamer Harrison Lea, and are now working on a new EP titled "Spirited City: Lux."
3. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Cody: Most of our songs are about personal events, and some nerdy stuff. Our new ep is a concept record. In an entirely new world we created. Following the story of Coward and the journey to his demise.
4. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
Cody: Of course all of our songs are originals. First the mad scientist Cody Whaley (guitarist) has slaved away writing the skeletons for all of the songs since the band was conceived. Next Christian De'Jesus writes the sexy yet satisfying drums to the skeleton pre pro. Following that Mike Roach and Cody Whaley (guitars) write some face melting leads. Then Nick Giuliani (bassist) writes bass lines to help top off the instrumental parts. Finally Cody Booth and Harrison lea track vocals over it. No one is constricted to there own instrument and we all write together.
5. Who are your musical influences?
Cody: The Devil wears Prada, Underoath, Between the Buried and Me, Periphery, The Faceless, Dimmu borgir, Chiodos... etc.
6. Where did the band get it's name and does it have a meaning behind it?
Cody: We needed to change the name from Gallows Grace to something new, each member brought in three names and we took a vote. There is no specific meaning why we did it but it kinda stands for standing up against your giants.
7. What can you tell me about your single "Empyrean"?
Cody: Empyrean is about Zack Fair and Cloud Strife, from final fantasy 7 and the struggles he deals with. We also have another new single out called "Tatl and Tael" which is about Zelda Majoras' mask.
8. How about this other new song you have in the works to work as a music video, can you tell me about that song and the video concept?
Cody: Originally we were gonna do a music video for "Tatl and Tael", but we ended just doing a lyric video. Now we are progressing on and are doing a music video for our first single off our new EP.
9. What's new in the recording of your guys music?
Cody: Like we touched on before we are working on our new EP "Spirited City: Lux" It will be released in the next couple of months. Its completely concept and we are stoked for everyone to hear it.
10. What do you have planned for this year?
Cody: We are finishing recording and planing on doing a music video for our new single. After that we will start marketing our new stuff. By playing plenty of shows and making more videos.
11. Anything else you'd like to say or add?
Cody: We appreciate you interviewing us and can't wait to see the feedback we get.
