Seminal rock band Story of the Year will celebrate the 10th anniversary of their classic album, Page Avenue, with a new acoustic reimagining of the record called Ten Years and Counting, which will be released on October 8th. The band also recently announced they will celebrate the milestone with the “Scream It Like You Mean It” headlining tour.
In anticipation for the upcoming release, Story of the Year has put together a teaser video for fans to preview the new renditions of the time-honored songs. Check it out HERE.
“I think people will dig the vibe of this record and enjoy experiencing these songs in an alternate way,” says guitarist Ryan Phillips. “I am a child of the 90's, and to me the Pearl Jam unplugged album is one of my favorite acoustic performances and recordings of all time. LIke the legendary Nirvana Unplugged, Pearl Jam didn't really change the songs at all; for the most part they played the album versions of the songs and simply swapped electric guitars for acoustics, and they captured magic. We wanted to split the difference between that approach and an all out departure from the original songs; a sort of middle ground that wasn't too far in either direction. I think we found a dynamic and interesting middle ground, utilizing pianos, percussion, synths, keys, acoustics, etc, and re-imagined these songs while still retaining the spirit of the originals. It's borderline weird to call it an acoustic album, because it is so much more than just two acoustics and a couple of vocal tracks. A wide array of instruments and sounds were utilized to make this album what it is. I am so proud of this record, and more importantly I am so proud of these songs. Ten Years and Counting is a celebration of "Page Avenue" and all the memories associated with those songs, and if nothing else, something different to listen to when you want to chill out. Or if you have a hangover. Or if you want to make love. To me.”
On September 16, 2003, Dan Marsala (vocals), Ryan Phillips (guitar), Philip Sneed (guitar), Adam Russell (bass) and Josh Wills (drums), came together to release one of the decade’s most revered and beloved rock albums, Page Avenue, which went on to to sale over half a million copies in the U.S. The record raised the bar for modern rock in the early 2000’s, producing hit radio anthems like “Until the Day I Die,” “Anthem of Our Dying Day” and “Sidewalks” and jump-started the career of the St. Louis five-piece.
“Page Avenue is an album that completely changed my life,” says Story of the Year singer Dan Marsala. “Every song reminds me of five wide eyed kids from St. Louis chasing their dreams. I never could have imagined where these songs would take me. Ten years later I still love these songs so much. Some of them have taken on completely different meanings that relate more to my life now. Reworking and re-recording this album brought back so many amazing memories. We knew we wanted to do something special for the ten year anniversary, something that would honor the original songs but at the same time give everyone a completely different experience. We basically stripped down every song and started from scratch. I love the vulnerability that shines through on this record. These songs have truly stood the test of time and I couldn't be more proud to be experiencing 10 years of Page Avenue. Here's to another 10 years!"
Story of the Year will self-release Ten Years and Counting digitally on October 8th. A small number of limited edition CD’s will be available on the band’s upcoming “Scream It Like You Mean It” tour.
