Post-hardcore My Silent Blaze is a 5-piece who has character that consists of hard adrenaline filled melodic riffs with a combination of diverse and emotional vocal chords that makes their music that more eye catching and ear dropping. Vocalist Alex Jade and guitarist Marius discusses their latest EP release and what other plans they have got lined-up.
1. Can I get a backstory on the band/ band biography?
Marius: Me and Bertram (our other guitarist) know each other from school, and wanted to launch a band for a long time. We both finished school in 2006, but it wasn't until mid-2010 when we found someone, who was suitable for what we had in mind. That was singer Alex Jade, and we found her through a website called "Bandboard". Before that happened, we already developed some riffs together, for example early versions of “Awakening” and “Chaos Melody”, which you can hear on our EP, and even some songs that are yet to be released and will be heard on our full length album, which we will start working on at the end of this year.
A year later, in mid-2011, we met our drummer Julian. After that, we were finally a complete band for the first time.
2. How did you guys come up with your band name?
Alex: We brainstormed with the whole band a few nights… I always had an idea of what I wanted the name mean to me. But it was hard to find something that has that meaning and sounds good and also all of us would like. It was a quiet moment when I combined “my silent” and “blaze”, threw it into the room and everybody looked at me like: “Yeah, that’s it!!” Haha, that was like a magic moment.^^ The meaning for me is that we all have a power inside of us which needs to be set free. Sometimes it’s really low and we can’t feel it anymore but when we set it free it silently breaks out like a powerful blaze. This is my silent blaze.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Marius: We're from Cologne and the surrounding area of Cologne / Bonn. In Cologne there is definitely an audience for our kind of music, which doesn't change the fact that it is always hard for a new band to get some people to their concerts. We played with many cool local bands over the past year, like Dying for Fun, My Adorable, And then She Bled, Until September, As the World Collapsed and Break my Smile.
4. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?
Alex: I’m a highly sensitive and emotional person, so I use emotional, personal stories and experiences of my life for inspirations. However I prefer to write in a metaphoric way which could mean different things. And that’s what I want the listener to do. To think about it. There are always different meanings to it. And for everybody it could mean a different thing… but in the end the messages always include hope, motivation, realization and insight.
5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?
Marius: That question is not easy to answer, because it is not that we are directly influenced by specific bands, or that we are trying to sound like a combination of specific bands, or like a typical band of this genre. We think that "Melodic Hardcore" is a term that describes our music best, however it’s not a genre that we exclusively listen to. We're influenced by many different kinds of music, even film-music or video game music, or J-Rock. We all listen to Metalcore and Hardcore, so that’s a big influence, of course.
6. Is there any story or concept behind the EP title?
Alex: The EP title is simply the title of our song “The Key”. This song just means a lot to us, we made our first music video to it and it’s also a nice connection to see it as a key for our band.;)
7. Who produced the EP and what was it like working with them?
Alex: Our producer is Armin Rave from the, Soundsight Studios" near Bonn. Working with him is great and he always makes us feel comfortable. We plan on having him record our full length album at the end of this year.
8. Who did the cover art for the EP and how much input did you have on it?
Marius: The pictures were taken by Chris Yeo at our Video shoot and Alex designed it.
9. When can we expect the EP to be released?
Alex: It was released in digital form on July 2nd. Hard copies will follow soon.
10. Tell me about the song and video for "The Key".
Alex: It’s about the 2 sides in everybody… we all have a dark and a bright side. Most of the time we try to hide the dark side, don’t want to show it, don’t accept it, ignore it. But that doesn't work forever. We become sick and loose ourselves if we deny parts of us. The dark side doesn't mean to be “evil”… it means “negative” emotions like hate, fear, anger, envy, jealousy, sadness,… we need to learn why we feel these emotions, we need to allow them to be there, we need to understand them! The Video is about the hidden dark side, caged for a long time… but the bright side noticed that something’s missing and that they need each other. They belong together or there will never be a balance. So the bright side decides to face the dark side… even though it is full of fear. The dark side gets power from the fear and breaks out… the bright side tries to escape but when they face each other both know that only one side will never be happy without the other one…
11. What are your upcoming touring/show plans?
Marius: We try to get every show opportunity possible. That's not always easy because we all work or study (or both). Currently we are trying to determine a time frame in the near future to go on tour in our area. Always check Facebook for upcoming shows. As for a tour in countries other than Germany, that will hopefully happen when we release our album.
12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Marius: Listen to us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/mysilentblaze) or Youtube. You can buy our EP digitally in every common online store.
13. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Marius: Electrifying melodies accompanied by meaningful, straight from the heart lyrics the listener can relate to.
14. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?
Marius: Hopefully many cool shows. We also plan to record a full length album this year.
Alex: I’d love to play shows around the world! We will try our best to make this happen…
15. Any final words of wisdom?
Alex: Stay true to yourself. Respect all creatures. Think…and wake up.
