Metal act GOREFIELD are from the depths of Australia and have released their latest album and plan on touring to get the word out about it and themselves. Bassist BJ discusses about their music, latest release, and future activity.
1. Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Gorefield, and how long the band has been together.
BJ: My name is BJ, I play the bass guitar and backup vocals in Gorefield of course. We have been together since like the start of 2011 and have been kicking ass ever since!
2. Tell us the brief history of your band.
BJ: We all went to high school together and became friends pretty much through the schools music program. It all just grew from there really, we relocated to Brisbane from the sunshine coast at the start of 2012 because of its thriving music scene, which was a pretty good move. We had the opportunity to support bands such as EPICA, Korpiklaani, Widow and next month HAVOK, fuck yeah! We also recorded our debut album at the end of 2012, which has been just released via New Justice Records!
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
BJ: Brisbane, Queensland, Australia! Yeah there scene is pretty kickass, there's more local bands than you can poke a stick at but a few favorites of mine would be, Lagerstein, Malakyte, Asylum and Hobo Magic. They are all rad as hell and the members all like to party.
4. What type of band are you?
BJ: We are a heavy metal band, probably more old school than anything. I dunno, its interesting to hear what other people think our genre is, either way, we like to call it old school metal. You can call us fish metal if you please haha, its up to the listener.
5. Why did you want to name the band Gorefield? What does it symbolize and represent for the band?
BJ: Haha we actually got the name from some silly YouTube video, its just a ripoff of Garfield, but hey it sounds cool right? Our first shirt was a pissed off cat, so that was also sort of a play on Garfield.
6. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
BJ: We all have our own musical influences, which come from pretty much every genre.
7. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
BJ: On our album, the majority of the songwriting was done by Kurt (guitar/lead vocals), they tend to explore personal issues and struggles he's faced and the band has faced. The lead single "Love Thy Enemy" is about when Kurt and our manager were beaten up at 4 in the morning out front of a 7/11. Than we have "As Dawn Bleeds The Sky" which is about seeking revenge on a dragon who fucked up some guys village. So we have a lot of diversity when it comes to song meanings and lyrics.
8. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
BJ: Haha of course, why wouldn't we? There's not much to it really, we write alot individually, so we either attempt a whole song and bring it to the group and/or show one another a rad riff and go from there. Kurt does alot of the lyrics, although I'm slowly getting there. Its sort of self inspiring, the more you write, the better you get at writing, so the more you want to write haha.
9. What's new in the recording of your music?
BJ: Our music give life and respect to the older bands that are mainly our influences. I cant say much is new in it except that its our music and those that haven’t heard it will find it new.
10. What are your dreams and goals?
BJ: To be able to make a living of music and to tour around the world.
11. What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?
BJ: ANY AND ALL OF THEM! They should be interested because THIS IS GOREFIELD!
12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
BJ: The album is now officially released online through iTunes and Spotify thanks to New Justice Records. It's also available in all leading retail music stores in Australia, which is the coolest thing ever!
13. What plans do you have for the near future as a band?
BJ: This year is already off to a great start, we will be supporting HAVOK alongside King Parrot, Desecrator and Malakyte at the start of February which will be a total blast. There are tons of killer acts coming through this year so who knows what other support we will get. We are also in the works of organizing a music video, which should be sweet haha!
14. What is it you'd like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
BJ: Well hopefully the music is good enough for them to have to choice in remembering the songs haha. I guess if you dig it, support us, that would be sweet. Expect a lot more from us in the upcoming years. Also tell all your friends about us haha!
15. Any final words of wisdom?
BJ: Thanks for the interview, it was a rad blast! Everyone in Australia be sure to grab a copy of our album from pretty much any music retail store, our Bigcartel (also has merch!), or just be a scumbag and pirate it haha!
