Heavy metal pirates Mad Agony formed way back when and since then have done what any other band would, play shows, tour, write and record material and release it. Now that some time has passed the band is still doing what they do best, playing metal music of course! Frontman vocalist Max Zane or "Mad" Max Zane as he likes to be called, discusses about his band and what they are really all about.
1. Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Mad Agony, and how long the band has been together.
Max: Hi, I'm Max, the lead vocalist of the band. I'd like to say that we've been around since 1991 but actually we're together since early 2011.
2. Tell us the brief history of your band.
Max: Mad Agony born in the summer of 1991. Registered a 4-track demo tape the same year titled "The only way to die". Played until 1993 then took a long pause. Reformed in the spring of 2011 and registered the first full-lenght "Chernobitch" in 2013 mixed and produced by Alex De Rosso (former Dokken guitarist) and the band. Actually the line-up is: Mad Max Zane (vocals), Samael Von Martin (lead guitar), Babetz (rythm guitar), Mega Die (bass guitar) and Demian De Saba (Drums).
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Max: We're from Padua, north-east of Italy, 40 minutes from Venice. The local metal and rock scene is poor, there are lot of people who hear heavy music though, but a very small part of them support the underground scene. As for the bands, I'd recommend Negatron, Souldaemon, Kranke'n'haus, Cruenta Lacrymis and Algol.
4. What type of band are you?
Max: We're pirates with a huge metal attitude!
5. Why did you want to name the band Mad Agony? What does it symbolize and represent for the band?
Max: We simply liked the name and how it sounds. Plus, it fits perfectly to us, since we're mad people! Ahahah!
6. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
Max: We all have different influences but a common love for old school heavy and thrash metal!
7. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Max: They cover different topics. Chernobitch is about Chernobyl disaster for example. Subconscious fear is a more introspective song, as you can guess from the title. Tribute of blood told the story of the viking invasion of Britain in 800 A.C., and so on.
8. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
Max: Yes, definitely. We sometimes play music of other bands because it's a learning experience and for the fun of it. Besides the fact that Samael is the one who writes the most of Mad Agony's songs, we all work on the new songs and everyone of us put his personal touch. I usually write all the lyrics.
9. How about new music, are you guys working on anything?
Max: You bet! We're working on new songs for the next CD!
10. What are your dreams and goals?
Max: To play our music 'til death!!!!
11. What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?
Max: The answer is in our concerts. Everybody should attend a Mad Agony gig just for the attitude of the band, beside the great music! Our attitude speak for ourselves!
12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Max: You can listen our music on our Facebook and ReverbNation pages. To get info to buy CD's and merchandise send an email to mad.agony@gmail.com or come to our concerts! We're actually working on our new website with an online store.
13. What plans do you have for the near future as a band?
Max: To play a lot of live concerts!
14. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Max: The irrefrenable instinct to bump his foot and bang his head!!!!
15. Any final words of wisdom?
Max: Spread the madness, support Mad Agony and good music!!!!
