Benighted Spits On Interview

Brutal death/grindcore act Benighted released their latest album "Carnivore Sublime" with touring to follow through for the rest of this year. Frontman vocalist Julien Truchan took some time to discuss this album and the touring they have coming up.

1. Can I get a backstory on the band/ band biography?

Julien: Benighted is a French brutal death/grind band which exists since 1998, we already released 6 albums and we’re about to unleash our new baby “Carnivore Sublime” which will be available on 14 February on season of Mist! We’re starving to death to start touring for this new album!!

2. How did you guys come up with your band name? What does this name symbolize and represent for you guys?

Julien: Benighted means “lost”“ignorant”… and it’s a good metaphor to symbolize the mental illness of our concept and the brutal fall into this kind of pathology!

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

Julien: We live close to Lyon in France and we have the luck to have a flourishing metal scene there! I think about In Arkadia, Destinity, The Seven Gates, The Walking Dead Orchestra, High For A Dive… you've got the choice! Hé hé!

4. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

Julien: Our main influences are bands like Napalm Death, Nasum, Aborted, Devourment or Suffocation.

5. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

Julien: All the concept of the band is about psychiatric pathologies as I work in a mental institute for more than a decade now. I use my professional experience for our lyrics and our message is nothing but use the insanity of our music to crush the skulls when we’re on stage and propose lyrics with a cruel dimension of reality.

6. Is there any story or concept behind the Carnivore Sublime title?

Julien: Yes, it’s a concept album! Carnivore Sublime is about a border-line personality man, conditioned by the constant fear to get abandoned because of the traumas he endured during his childhood from his adultery mother and his teacher who sexually aroused him like you can see on our video clip for the track “Experience Your Flesh”. This new album is about all those deficient parents who’d better take a dog instead of making kids. I can unfortunately see the result at my work every day.

7. Who did the cover art for Carnivore Sublime and how much input did you have on it?

Julien: The artwork has been entirely made by our brother Sven from Aborted with Avernus Studios like it was already the case for Asylum Cave, our previous album. He perfectly knows the kind of insane spirit we want to inject in our visuals to underline the insanity of our music! He made an amazing job, I just had to tell him the concept and the idea of having both covers to make a parallel between them and he followed his ideas! The result is awesome!!

8. Who produced it? What was it like working with all of these guys?

Julien: We went back to the Kohlekeller Studio in Germany where we recorded our 4 last albums! Our sound is born there and we never stopped with the help of Kohle to make it more powerful and massive from an album to another! Kohle is a very good friend and we feel in his studio like home! Together we always try to find some new stuff to make it better and better! For example on this new one, we paid a particular attention to the bass sound to make it more dirty, aggressive and disgusting! It’s very easy to work with Kohle as we know ourselves very well and know exactly what everybody has in mind! This connection is a great weapon to obtain the very effective sound we've got on Carnivore Sublime!

9. Which would you say is your favorite song on the album and why?

Julien: I’d say Experience Your Flesh for the insanity of his riffs, the brutality of the drums and the efficiency of the chorus which is just crushing!!!

10. You released a video for the song Experience Your Flesh, can you tell me about the song and video?

Julien: This song is about the sexual harassment the central character of the story was victim of from his female teacher when he was seven, and how it ravaged him by introducing inappropriate urges and needs in his personality building. The video clip was made by Kick Your Eyes Productions and they made a great job, translating the deranged behavior through three different spheres: old, sensual and gore.

11. What are your upcoming touring/show plans?

Julien: Right after the release of Carnivore Sublime, we have a French tour with our brothers from Loudblast, then we have got a Russian tour coming in April, then European festivals like Hellfest or Metaldays, and finally a whole month European Tour in November with great bands I’m unfortunately not allowed to reveal the names yet, but it will be devastating!

12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

13. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

Julien: I’d like him to remember that an extreme experience where he’s got the impression he’s caught straight to the throat and discover he liked it! Ah ah! Once a fan made an amazing comparison, telling that Benighted is like a truck full of pigs crashing against a wall, it’s violent, bloody and full of growls and squeals!

14. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

Julien: We’re actually working on a second video clip for another track of the new album, and it will be a big surprise when it will be out! I let you guys discover it!

15. Any final words of wisdom?

Julien: Thanks a lot for this interview and impatient to see you on tour!! Stay sick my friends!
