Thrash metal act Rusted Brain got their start a few years ago, since they have played shows, released their debut full-length "High Voltage Thrash" and have got new music to be released in terms of a demo and another full-length album with even more shows in the working process! Bassist and vocalist Damian "Rumcayz" Lodowski discussed the debut release, playing shows, and some insight into these entertaining performers.
1. Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Rusted Brain, and how long the band has been together.
Damian: Hey! I'm Rumcayz and I am the bassist and vocalist for the band Rusted Brain. We started to play in mid-2009 but it didn't get serious until 2011. A few months before we had played a tour with Hirax and Assassin.
2. Tell us the brief history of your band.
Damian: As I said, our history started in 2009, when when I, Benek (drummer), Rogal (ex-guitarist) and Tarni (ex-guitarist) made some heavy metal jams together. Since then, we were preparing our own material. In the summer of 2010, we recorded our demo "Juggler" (January 2011) and that was the time we realized what we really wanted to play. It took a year to prepare the tracks we recorded for "High Voltage Thrash".
Quite a long time but we had enough time to make every aspect of every song, recording, and graphics perfect. In the meantime we played the 2012 Metalfest before headliner's Megadeth. Just before the recording session was done, Tarni left the band, so that's why we have Czerniak playing with us now. Soon after "High Voltage Thrash" was released by Slaney Records on CD, Tridroid Records on tape, and FriendyFire via the internet. In 2013, we were playing shows all over Poland, making new writings for the next release and next part of touring which was in Europe this time! Moreover some time Rogal decided to leave the band so now we have a new guitarist who I can't say who it is yet.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Damian: We are from Warsaw, and we are proud of it! If you would be able, come here and taste it! Regarding to the question- in Warsaw there are lots of people that are listening to all kinds of metal. Moreover, there are a lot of gigs here, so it’s nearly impossible to be present at all of them. But when the gig is really interesting and the publicity was fine there are a lot of people there. About the local bands I can recommend: Thunderwar – fresh, but still classical death metal, and Testor – really nice thrash.
In Poland situation is similar to Warsaw, but there are many more great bands! There are lots of metalheads, but sometimes you have full concert halls, sometimes there are only few people. It depends who is playing, and what’s happening in the city that day. I said that there are some great bands. Indeed, I won’t mention them all, but I’ll try. So check: Tester Gier, Terrordome, The No-Mads, Deathinition, Repulsor, Thermit, Driller- these are our ‘new wave’. Also you should check kAt, Turbo, Acid Drinkers, Decapitated, Vader, and many more.
4. What type of band are you?
Damian: I don’t know? Really, it’s hard to say. We are thrash metal maniacs, and those are the words that best describes us. We are young, we play fast with fury, and so can I say anything else? I think "maniacs” are right to the point, with what we'd like to call ourselves.
5. Why did you want to name the band Rusted Brain? What does it symbolize and represent for the band?
Damian: Haha that's a really strange story. In the beginning we had some ideas of how to name the band. We had known that we needed some unique words that would describe the state of our minds. So there it came, Rusted Brain. For us it means old school moreover there is no other Rusted Brain in the world, so as soon as we invented the name that's what we called our band. We are huge fans of old school music and old school cars so Rusted Brain was the right way to go with what we needed us to be.
6. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
Damian: Well, I’m listening to all kind of music, but if I have to choose some, I would choose; Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera, Down, Death, Hatebreed, Municipal Waste, kAt, and Acid Drinkers. These are the bands that have been really big influences on who I am, and what I am doing. And as for the other influences, I don’t think I have somebody who is my idol. I like action movies, thrillers, sci-fi/fantasy movies, I love The Witcher siege, and some other fantasy stories, and I think all of them imprint on what I’m doing.
7. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Damian: Most of our songs are about human weakness, senselessness of war, and fanaticism. But some of them are positive party songs that make no sense.
8. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
Damian: Yeah I'm a writer too. The band usually discusses on what the songs should be about. Sometimes I'm just writing, especially when I find a topic that I have something to say about, only then will I consult with the rest of the band on if they like the motive of the song or not. I think there's really an importance when we write the lyrics to songs never the vice versa. To be honest, I feel better with writing music than the lyrics because I don't like the moments, when I realize oh my God there are too many syllables that I have to change this or that it's really frustrating.
9. What's new in the recording of your music?
Damian: Many people say nothing. They mentioned that we are playing nicely but it was invented 30 years ago so we can't play anything new. Maybe they are right but I believe that if we are playing honestly we are playing the music that we really love and you will feel it. You will feel some freshness in the music and some notes will make you want to headbang to our music. We are not inventing the wheel we want to give people the boost of energy to give them something fun to listen too.
10. What are your dreams and goals?
Damian: It depends on what dreams. Of course my dream is to play in concert halls filled with people but you know and I know it's nearly impossible. I think that the success will be playing tours all over the world just for fun, because I really like traveling! We want to show people our music, be able to transport to places, sleep, eat food, maybe some beer and cigarettes, everything we want to happen haha. That's why I want to live music as a fun hobby it won't be easy to reach but we will try!
11. What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?
Damian: They should know that we are preparing new material so if you want to have Rusted Brain in your distro be prepared! I don't know anything else they should know. Only thing that comes to mind is listen to "High Voltage Thrash" and rate it!
12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Damian: You can listen to Rusted Brain on iTunes, Deezer, Spotify, YouTube, and anything else you can imagine. Moreover, you can check our merchandise on www.rustedbrain.8merch.com – our official merch source.
13. What plans do you have for the near future as a band?
Damian: In following months we’ll be working on new material. We want to record and release short demo in first half of this year. In the meantime we’ll prepare many more gigs in Poland and Europe. And then? Who knows? For sure we’ll be preparing for our second album recording, but I have no idea when it could be released.
14. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Damian: The energy. The pure fucking energy that charges your batteries. I know we have this kick ass melody in our music which causes you to hum it all the time!
15. Any final words of wisdom?
Damian: Sure! Check out our music, and see ya on gigs! Thrash on!
