Post hardcore experimental act You May Kiss The Bride have released their debut EP "The Wretched" and have got plans for this year and many more to come that are on that horizon! Frontman vocalist Alptuğ Ozdemir and drummer Batuhan Demir discusses how they create music, their latest release and plans.
1. Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in You May Kiss the Bride, and how long the band has been together.
Hi to everyone ! We're You May Kiss The Bride. We're post-hardcore band fom Istanbul Turkey. We recently had some line-up changes. Alptuğ is our screamer, Korhan is Vox/Guitar, Berkay guitars, Batuhan bass and another Batuhan at drums. The band has formed at early august 2011.
2. Tell us the brief history of your band.
After we started band, with our ex mates, we released a single. It was Ke$ha - Take It Off cover. Cover has been loved and got 110k view. After that we recorded "Killing You" and shoot a live video clip for that. Then we showed up at some local shows. One of them was with Memphis May Fire. It was awesome show for us and we had a chance to meet them, play together. Then we recorded another single named "I Told You Once This Is the Last" before our EP "The Wretched". After "I Told U Once" single, we started working with Monolith Management and signed with Matchless Records. "The Wretched" EP released from the Matchless Records. So now we are working on our new EP with our new line-up and we will release a single before that.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
As we said we all live in Istanbul. Here, most people don't even know what is Post-hardcore. We are the only band here plays this genre. This makes hard to organize shows, sell our merch. But we still have lovely fans here and we love them. It's weird too much people hates us here too they don't even listen our genre. They only like to criticize without creating any material. That's weird.
4. Why did you want to name the band You May Kiss the Bride? What does it symbolize and represent for the band?
Actually it symbolizes nothing. We were looking for name and Batuhan came up with this idea. He said it was wedding scene from a movie.
5. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
Alptug: Beethoven, Whitechapel. Post-modern arts.
Berkay: Black Veil Brides, Suicide Silence, Pierce the Veil.
Korhan: Motionless In White, Avenged Sevenfold.
Batuhan: Parkway Drive, Lamb of God, Memphis May Fire. Philosophy.
Batuhan: Behemoth, Asking Alexandria.
6. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Our songs were mostly about heart brokers and for the fallen dreams. But from now on our new songs will be more politic. We live in this world without thinking tomorrow we never think about other people, nature. People are insusceptible. We wanna write words about those things.
7. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
Every member of the band creates some materials (Breakdown, melody, intro) then we bring 'em together.
8. What have you released so far and how were your releases received by the public/media? What's new in the recording of your music?
We released 1 cover, 2 single and 1 EP. You can see our Ke$ha cover at some YouTube channels. Our singles released via YouTube and our Facebook page and you can buy our EP from iTunes.
9. What are your dreams and goals?
First of all we wanna record a studio album with good producers. Because its really important, we wanna reach as much as people we can. So we wanna tour around the world. And also playing at Warped Tour is really main dream for us.
10. What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?
They should know whoever listens our music they love it. We are really good at performing. Problem is the we can not reach too much people, and we did all those works from nothing. We recorded ourselves, we spent our weeks to create and record our music. Every single member's main goal in their life is to be famous with this band. Our band is main thing for us and people should know we are gonna make it. We will work harder, try harder and finally we are going to make it. We wanna be in this sector and we will be.
