Vancouver, Washington's Between Chaos And Creation is a four piece that has many influences, releases, and showcase experience. They re-recorded their debut EP and are hard at work finishing up for their debut full-length album. While they have faced some line-up changes along with some other mishaps these guys are here to stay and will release material, play shows, and much more. Guitarist Kyle VanZitteren discusses the EP and full-length process and what else they have in-store for us.
1. Can I get a backstory on the band/band biography?
Kyle: We started out in March 2013 with one guitar and drums. Our guitarist composed one full song start to finish (Hollow), which set the bar to a new level. After getting an idea of what our sound would be like we started the search for a full line up. Our first addition was our buddy that shreds on guitar, but was never in a band. Secondly we had the vocalist from our last band (asleep at last) join the crew, doing bass and vocals. Coming across the Project Independent tour we contacted Jeff Totten and confirmed a nationally broadcast show that was being held in September 2013, before we even had a complete group. Continuing our search for a vocalist we posted to craigslist. A couple days later we had a full line up. After 4 months of rigorous rehearsals 2x a week and finishing our composition for a 4 song set, we played our very first show as (Between Chaos And Creation) on September 8th, 2013. After that we played a handful of local shows with a bunch of great bands and musicians. Unfortunately some stories do not have the happiest endings. We had multiple issues with the vocalist that joined back in April of 2013, parting ways with him a month before our next gig. What were we to do? Our bassist at the time, which was primarily a vocalist, reclaimed his position as the front man. We had 4 rehearsals before our next performance, which didn't prove to be a problem for for him to write and structure a 5 song set lyrically. After our last show, our drummer informed us that he could not continue with us at the time being, due to personal issues, family, work, etc.. Our Guitarist that was new to being in a band and performing, is now drumming for BCAC and we are in the process of rewriting and reproducing our material.
2. How did you guys come up with your band name?
Kyle: Our Vocalist came up with the name. It was perfect for the instrumentation and image we are spreading.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Kyle: We are based out of Vancouver, Washington. The music scene out here is pretty awesome. Lots of talent, and just all around great people. We would definitely like to refer our good friends in (Common Catastrophe) and (Subtle City). Though their styles are a lot lighter than ours, they are cool guys and awesome musicians that work really hard at what they do.
4. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?
Kyle: Tyler is a metaphor man. Everything he says is like poetry. Quite intriguing stuff. Every song has a different meaning and always a different way of telling a story.
5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?
Kyle: Instrumentally we have a lot of major influences, all being heavy. A couple would be Thy Art Is Murder, Boris The Blade, As I Lay Dying (Good Luck Tim Lambesis) Change Of Loyalty, and Suicide Silence (R.I.P Mitch Lucker).
6. Is there any story or concept behind the Abandoned title?
Kyle: There is. It is mainly a concept of feeling lost or unguided through this crazy ride we call life. A quest of finding your hope/faith in yourself and others. A greatly versatile message.
7. Who produced Abandoned and what was it like working with them?
Kyle: I produced our material. The rest of the guys like working with me, at least i think.......Just kidding, they love working with me. I started producing around the same time that the band was created, so it has been a learning curve. I am currently enrolled at Portland State University and will be obtaining the 3 major certificates in audio production within the year. 8. Who did the cover art for Abandoned and how much input did you have on it?
Kyle: Ben Mota from Axis Design in Chico California did this outstanding artwork. Honestly we had absolutely no input on the design. He threw the whole Abandoned package up on his page. Kyle came across it one day and showed the rest of us, we were sold on it because it has the exact image we were going for, along with the perfect album name. Thank you Ben Mota.
9. How would you say that Abandoned compares, differs, and has evolved from your EP release?
Kyle: Our EP release consisted of 5 songs off of our full length album, that we released for free, because we are going to release the whole album with those songs on it. We are taking extensive measures to ensure that each song will be complex and intricate vocally and instrumentally.
10. Why did you want to go and re-recorded your EP and will any of those songs be on the full-length?
Kyle: We wanted to re-record the EP because the quality wasn't that good and we had a vocalist change, so there was copyright stuff involved. Every song from the EP will be on our full length (Arise, Hollow, New; Beginning, At Last , and Fallen).
11. What are your upcoming touring/show plans?Kyle: After we re-release the EP we will be playing shows again, local to start. Then either tour off of the EP or wait until the full length is released.

13. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Kyle: We want the listener to remember every individual piece, drums, bass, both guitars, and vocals. We want them to remember that we make these tunes for our own pleasure of course, but mainly for the listener.
14. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?
Kyle: They can expect to see progress in every song we write, as well as an outstanding performance.
15. Any final words of wisdom?
Kyle: We are musicians, we are in a band, but we are still people just like everyone else. We love to make personal friends with everyone of our fans so we connect with more.
