Josey Milner Talks New Music and some Past, Present, and Future Insight

Country artist Josey Milner got her start at only 17 turning heads left and right with her captivating musical skills. Since then she's embarked on touring and playing showcases, writing and recording music of course and so much more she has planned. Josey herself took some time to talk about her talented musical career and where it plans to go.

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

Josey: It started with auditions after I decided to try out the career when I was 14. That was the first band, but throughout the years, we have gained members mainly through recommendations.  I love my band. It’s almost like we’re a big family. We can joke around with each other, all the while pull off very entertaining and fun shows.

2. Why did you want to call this act after yourself? Why do you think a lot of acts go and name their bands after themselves anyway?

Josey: It was pretty easy, considering it is my name. I wanted to be known as a solo artist and not a band, so using my name was the best way to go. And if it is the same reason as me, they want to be known as a solo artist and not a band.

3. How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?

Josey: My style is definitely country. Every kind of country mixed with some classic rock and even a little pop. As far as influences, growing up, it was common to listen to artist like George Jones, Tammy Wynette, and Patsy Cline. Those artists have made an impact on me for sure, but probably not as much as Miranda Lambert. Since I’m doing this career in the present day, the country music scene has changed a bunch. I just think Miranda is a great person and I love all of her music. She is highly respected and is definitely an artist that is leaving/will leave an impact on the country music industry.

4. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

Josey: I don’t know is there is one lyrical theme that I stick to. I just play good music that a lot of people can relate to. I try to pick songs that will really impact the audience/listeners.

5. Why did you want to only release singles and not a full release in terms of an EP or full-length album?

Josey: Getting into the career, it has worked out better to release singles. Now that I am really getting into it though, we are starting to put together an EP. We've been really narrowing down songs and the process is really starting to come together.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

Josey: I do. I have a song that we are going to be releasing the beginning of July. I’m very excited for this next song because I think a lot of people will be able to relate. It will tie in well with my latest single “Cowgirls”.

7. What inspires you to do what you do?

Josey: Just seeing how music impacts so many people makes me want to do it. I have had several people tell me that my music makes their days better. Just to know that I am making a difference with something I love makes me love this career even more.

8. How does music affect you and the world around you?

Josey: It affects everything I do. No matter what I’m doing, I pretty much always incorporate music. It’s just that one thing that can tie into every situation.

9. What advice would you give to fellow acts and what are the biggest obstacles for acts?

Josey: For anyone trying out any career, not just music, it’s going to be a long, difficult road. As long as you are dedicated and you know that it what you want to do, you can. It takes a lot of hard work, and you cannot let anyone get in the way or say you can’t. You can. As far as obstacles, the biggest one I've faced is my age. Starting this career so young steered people away at first, but now that I’m getting older, it is not as big of a problem.

10. Your genre of choice was country. Why pick this genre out of all the others available? Would you say that you’re a country girl so that's why you picked it over the others or was there another reason?

Josey: I grew up listening to country music and pretty much living the country lifestyle. I grew up on a small farm with horses, chickens, dogs and a couple ducks at times. I’m used to having to get dirty and being responsible. I would definitely say that is why I chose country music. Not only did I grow up that way, but I also did rodeo before I got into music. I just have that country background that connects me to the country lifestyle.

11. What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?

Josey: I come from a background of family that has no music history. For me to just step into this career and be doing pretty good with it should say something. I’ve been on this career roughly 3 years now and have already received many award nominations, number one singles, and a large fan base. I am extremely dedicated to this career and will continue working until I reach the goals I have set. I love performing on stage and entertaining an audience. It is the only career that I want to say is my career.

12. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

Josey: I have quite a bit of stuff planned for this year. Several performances, special appearances, and hopefully an EP. Last year was great, and this year is turning out even better. Best way to keep up is to check out my Facebook page (Facebook.com/joseymilner) or check out my website (www.joseymilnermusic.com). I definitely hope to be someday be a well-known artist with singles on the radio and a common household name. I also hope to have been on many tours at several sold out venues.

13. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

Josey: You can find my music on iTunes and you can also listen to it on my website. As far as merch, we have a little on my website, but we offer even more at the live shows.

14. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

Josey: I am just a small town girl that had a huge dream. I am chasing that dream and it is taking me to places that I could only ever have imagined. I love what I do and I love that I make people happy with what I do. This career is amazing and I love to say that it is my career.
