Country rock n' roller Marshall Dane has released his latest album and has plans set for the rest of this year! Marshall himself discusses that album and how he creates his style of country rock n' roll.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Marshall: I've had this current line up for about 3 years now. My drummer, Kevin Birch, along with Keyboardist Rich Roxborough are the newest guys, followed by Steve Skingley on bass whom I've played with since 2009, and Emile Deon whom I've had as my go-to guys, since 2006
2. Why did you want to call this act after yourself? Why do you think a lot of acts go and name their bands after themselves anyway?
Marshall: I did it because I was the only ‘constant’ in the band. So, even though I had to replace players here and there, I didn't feel I had to change the name…therefore my ‘name’ became the ‘brand’. I’m sure most artists, that start off solo, feel a similar way. If we were the same band since high school, we’d probably have a ‘band’ name.
3. How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?
Marshall: I’d say my style is Country Rock. We have a lot of energy on stage (rock) and we sing songs that tell stories and have meaning (country) Bands like Zac Brown Band or artists like Kenny Rogers, definitely permeate my music!
4. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?
Marshall: Not sure if we have one lyrical theme, but we do try and keep lighthearted about life, while still insisting on not taking it for granted. Life is precious and fleeting…..sometimes we sing songs that make us forget about the rough stuff, and just smile and not sweat the small stuff….and sometimes we sing songs so that we remember the tough times, learn from them, and find a light at the end of the tunnel.
5. What's your take on "One of These Days" as a whole?
Marshall: It’s an empowering album that, although touches at times on some deep issues, it’s all about finding the silver lining in life’s journey….and one of my favorite ways is to touch on the fun, silly, cute, beautiful, laugh-able, loveable things in life. Finding ways to use words like ‘Cock-a-doodle-doo’ and ‘Saran Wrap’…do just that.
6. What's your favorite song on the album right now?
Marshall: Hmmm…I love all my children. At the moment, we’re highlight Alcohol Abuse! Fast paced, lyric jammed, dance track:)! If you haven't seen it watch it HERE!
7. What are your expectations for the CD?
Marshall: I expect it’ll get me into the next round:) It’s designed to show my best works to date. Hopefully it leads to another record…if it does..it’s done it’s job. :)
8. Did you get everything you wanted on this album or were there some songs that didn't make the cut, that you will include on the next release, or have you already written new music for the next release?
Marshall: There were about 50 songs ready for this current album, which only held spots for 12. You should hear song 13,14 and 15 that didn't make it…I’m pretty sure they’ll be on the next record…which yes, I’m already working on it!
9. Tell me about the video for the song "Alcohol Abuse". Do you plan to release anymore singles and videos off this release?
Marshall: The video was our biggest undertaking to date. Definitely worth making this step forward. We were helped by fans, friends, and family to make this vid, and it turned out awesome and fun fun fun! Amazing how you take 13 hours of filming and mash it into 3.5 minutes:) We will be releasing at least one more single off of this album…and hopefully another indie video to compliment it.
10. Your genre of choice was country why pick this genre out of all the others available? Would you say that your a country guy so that's why you picked it over the others or was there another reason?
Marshall: Oddly enough, country picked me. I always used to keep my head down and write songs, not concerned about radio or genres or what shelf it would fit on in the stores…. When I finally decided to pursue radio, I looked at what it was that I did, play guitar and write songs and sing, went to LA, didn't fit in….went to Nashville, and fit like a glove. My style of writing and the ethics and morals I tried to express with it, was exactly the country sentiment…It’s was me..I was Country. Period the end.
11. What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?
Marshall: www.marshalldane.com It’s progressive, intensely driven, passionate and sincere. We've had ups and downs, big shows and little shows…but always moving forward and making a mark in the industry as one of the hardest working acts around! I’m not stopping....ever. :)
12. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Marshall: As a band, tour tour tour. Then after I finish writing the next album,…record record record!
13. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Marshall: We are all over the internet, almost every format for buying and listening…The best way to find us is www.marshalldane.com where you can connect to our Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, iTunes etc…! Our site also host our videos and song lyrics as well as updated feeds from our social media.
14. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Marshall: Hopefully they’ll remember my voice, and that the lyrics touched them as much as the groove.
