Death Koolaid's Siren Acts like a True Musician

Punk rock metal act Death Koolaid have released their EP "Vol. 1" with future plans for a follow-up release and plans to play shows here and tour with even more activity not that far off. Frontwomen Siren Sycho discussed the EP from the inside out and the plans in-store.

1. Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Death Koolaid, and how long the band has been together.

Siren: I’m Siren Sycho and I'm lead vocalist in Death Koolaid. I joined the band November 2013. The band had already been together for around a year with their original singer.

2. Tell us the brief history of your band.

Siren: The guitarist, Roy Darkwater (Phoenix Dirk) and drummer, The Crossman had already written the 7 track EP when I entered the band. I added my own lyrics to 6 of the 7 tracks and within a month we were playing our first gig at The Intrepid Fox in December.  With one last adjustment of changing the old bass player for current bassist Mr Bond we were now a complete 4 piece. With our second music video out for track ‘The 2nd Rule” and EP released late April 2014 we have been gigging frequently around London.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

Siren: We are based in London. The music scene that surrounds me and my band is lacking any substance, any appeal and any passion. Most of the scene rotates around a mundane sound and forgettable visuals.  Now the music industry is completely transformed into a money making machine and the internet sucks the life and soul from anything that is still sacred in music. I feel if something doesn't evolve and change soon, the future of music will be taken over entirely by meaningless, pointless shit that will brain wash the masses and pollute the waves of the air.  The bands already on the scene to look out for are Generation Graveyard - hard hitting brutal music and will rock the fuck out of you live shows.

4. What type of band are you?

Siren: The “type” of band we are is one that is angry, pissed off, fucking loud, aggressive, wanting to have a laugh, wanting to tell people what we fucking think and we don’t give a shit about what people think.

5. Why did you want to name the band Death Koolaid? Does the name Koolaid refer ti the actual beverage?

Siren: The name Death Koolaid is not named after the drink. It is named after cult leader Jim Jones and his deathly concoction of cyanide-laced grape-flavored Flavor Aid which got named the Death Koolaid.  Jones brainwashed the people of the town he ran and made over 900 die by committing suicide by drinking the Koolaid.  We want our band name to remind people of when people are made to do things that are out of their control. The weak minded are dictated to and molded into what ever the powerful want them to be.

6. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

Siren: Musical influences are Nikki Sixx, bassist from Motley Crue, as reading his words in The Dirt changed my way of thinking and opened my eye up to a world of rock n’ roll that I wanted to be a part of.  Al Jourgensen, the vocalist from Ministry just because he doesn't give a fuck and has never let people stand in his way. Also vocalist from band Amen, Casey Chaos, who has been an early influence musically for me and now good friends. His stage performance and passion for his music is what made want to be the musician I am today.

7. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Siren: Our songs topics are about, everyday issues, being trapped in mundane life, never getting free from corporate ties, love, hate, drugs, money and shit like that.

8. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)

Siren: Yes we write our own songs. The guitarist and drummer write the main music, with the influence of the bassist and I write all my own lyrics bar one song P.P.K.R as it was already written and out as a single before I joined the band.

9. You released an EP called "Vol. 1" will the follow-up whether it be an EP of LP be "Vol. 2"?

Siren: Yes we did and I am not at liberty to discuss that.

10. Why were "The Second Rule" and "P.P.K.R." chosen as the singles/videos off the EP and do you have any new music in the works?

Siren: As I just mentioned P.P.K.R was already out and released when I joined with the old singer, when I stepped in we rerecorded the vocals and re shot the music video.  We chose ‘The 2nd Rule” as the follow up video as we felt it was our next strongest track.  Yes we have already a new song added to our live set list. We have also just finished writing another new track, with another shortly behind.

11. What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?

Siren: People should know about Death Koolaid as we are a new breed of energy and anger.  We punch out real music, sing about the things that matter. As we spit in the face of the corporate snakes that tie down the weak and the normal we will use our music to fill minds with the noise of our reality.  With our tracks down and spreading our live shows around, you would be unfortunate to not be part of our musical movement that will shake up the modern music of today.

12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

Siren: You can listen to our music on all the normal social media platforms and music hosting sites. All can be found on your website www.deathkoolaid.com and our EP can be bought on iTunes, Amazon, CD baby and maybe another place online? Google it and do your research.

13. What plans do you have for the near future as a band?

Siren: The plans for the future will be releasing a 6 track vinyl with songs from our digital EP out already. We will be playing on the 2nd August on Q stage at Brighton and Hove’s Pride to a park that fills 45,000 people in one day.  As well as other dates around London we are supporting old school punks Discharge out of town in Lowestoft in October.

14. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

Siren: When listening to our music for the first time I want people to remember how the music made them feel, how they can relate to my words and the bands name would be great.

15. Any final words of wisdom?

Siren: My words of wisdom are if you want it then go get it, no one else should have to do that shit for you.  Do what you want and fuck the rest, don’t live your life in other peoples shadows. Never ever let your creativity or musical style get compromised by others. After a year of being preached to and told what to and how to do my music, I realized this is never a way a true musician should act.  There is no scene and fuck the system!
