One I Cinema's Marco says It's Not My Fault I'm Being Interviewed
German alternative rock n' roll metalheds One I Cinema, was founded in 2013 by Marco Meyer who remains to be responsible for the band's musical approach and direction. Being the main producer, singer, song writer, and multi-instrumentalist. After doing his thing with the release of his debut album, he assembled a live band to perform along with him. Joining him would be three other members in the live setting, Hannes Kelch (guitar), Ilja John Lappin (bass) & Phillip Steven Albright (drums), making the whole a four-piece rock band on stage. From that point in, they have played shows as well as written and recorded music in which would be found upon their debut Self'-Titled album. Main man Marco Meyer singer, guitarist, and song writer was the one to discuss the debut efforts and plans ahead!
1. What type of band are you?
Marco: We're an Alternative rock/metal band.
2. Tell us the brief history of your band.
Marco: The story behind ONE I CINEMA is a bit different, I guess. Without being conceited, the essence of ONE I CINEMA is basically me. I started this project as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter & vocalist in early 2013, when I had written lots of material over the past few years and then finally booked a studio for 12 days for working on this first album. I recorded 90% of it in that session, all by myself, just with an engineer. Tracking drums, bass, guitars and doing vocals- Man, I was exhausted and lost lots of weight during that session! But, the whole thing basically was born out of necessity, because I just couldn't find bands or musicians to work with. Me working mainly as a drummer at that time, was never completely happy or satisfied, because I always had this other stuff in my mind- the guitar, the songwriting ,the creative work! I just didn't fit nowhere. Once I realized that I wanted to make an album by myself, as a multi-instrumentalist, everything made sense. It took me a while to realize, that I had to do the vocals, as well. At first, I didn't want to sing and was looking for a vocalist, but couldn't find one. End of the story was, I had to force myself to do it and all the sudden I found myself singing in the studio, for the first time. I just started experimenting with my voice like 2 or 3 months before- it was weird! What took me so long to get the album out, was finding the right business-team and especially the right BAND to work with! Now, I got the most amazing and accomplished musicians from the German rock scene- Phillip Steven Albright (drums) from Hamburg, Hannes Kelch (guitar) from Berlin and Ilja John Lappin (bass)from Hannover.
3. What is the story behind the name, One I Cinema, if there is one to tell?
Marco: Well, there's not really a story. I just was looking for something that implies, that ONE guy is behind all of this. I wanted to have something quit original that also sounded cool. Then I added the "I" to underline the ONE guy, which happens to be me. The "CINEMA" is basically something that sounded cool to me, but I also associated it with a place for various types of Art, you know? I think my music is pretty diverse at times and I have an artistic approach to music, as well. So, the name ONE I CINEMA makes sense to me.
4. Who are your musical influences?
Marco: Muse, Alter Bridge, Slipknot, Guns 'n' Roses, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Paramore, Michael Jackson...
5. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Marco: There's definitely a dark lyrical thread through out the record. Thematically, it's all about human emotions and impressions like selfishness, feelings of guilt, isolation, rejection, self-disgust up to suicidal thoughts.
6. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
Marco: Yes, I write my own songs. I can't reconstruct in detail how the songwriting process was for this first record, because 80% of the songs are 3-4 years old. However, I most of the time would start with the guitar and a basic idea/riff for a certain part, that I have in my head. I would then record the bass in order to have a proper playback for experimenting with the drum-part. I would first build the part and then try to come up with a possible arrangement for a song. Once I got a good arrangement, I would search for vocal melodies, just by singing what comes to my head- It's basically a lot of experimenting and finding "the right" solution for oneself. Lyrics are 99% of the time the last thing I work on, because contentwise, I wanna react to what the music makes me feel and think of.
7. What can people expect from your new album "One I Cinema"?
Marco: Well, it's my fist album- But people that wanna listen to ONE I CINEMA can expect high energetic, very dynamic and hooky modern rock/metal music. A lot of fat, in your face rock songs- sometimes busy, sometimes a little bit more laid-back. Sometimes very atmospheric and sometimes even melancholy. As far as the average rock fan is concerned, i think there's something for everyone!
8. Why did you want to go with "Not My Fault" as a single and video choice for "One I Cinema"?
Marco: Because it's a very powerful song, with a strong, pulsating riff, a great hook and an intense atmosphere. It's very dynamic, too. It just has everything that a good modern rock song needs, in my opinion.
9. You decide to go the Self-Titled route for this release, why go and call this album after yourselves, One I Cinema?
Marco: I think it's the best think you can do as a total newcomer act and the term "ONE I CINEMA"
is strong, subtle, interesting and kind of mysterious enough. The record isn't a concept-album either, so it just made sense that way!
10. If you had to pick another song off this album to show someone, that has never heard you guys before and you wanted them to be hooked in, which would you pick and why?
Marco: It would be INSIDIOUS! Why? Because it's the most distinct song on the record and it's energetic as hell! It actually sums up everything that happens on the album and it's probably my favorite track off the record.
11. Did you guys have any leftovers from this release that will be used for future releases or have you gone forth and already written material for future purposes?
Marco: No leftovers from this release. 80% of the songs on this album are actually old, written years ago. I got lot's of new material! We maybe release an EP or something very soon.
12. How about shows and touring, what are the plans for those?
Marco: My amazing band and I are on tour in Germany in April with the great band DARKHAUS from Scotland. We're very excited about it and can't wait to play live! This is gonna be our first official tour!
13. What else do you have lined-up for this year?
Marco: We're trying to be on the road as much as we can. Then there's gonna be a video shoot for the third single "INSIDIOUS" coming the next few weeks. Other than that, I'm working on new material and the next possible release!
14. Anything else you'd like to add or would want to say?
Marco: Thanks so much to the people who already supported ONE I CINENA the way they did in our 3 months of official existence! If you're new and like ONE I CINEMA, spread the word and share as much as you can!
