Metal go getters MESHIAAK are hard at work writing and recording for their upcoming album due out this fall! Bassist Nick Walker discusses the release along with some details about the band and plans ahead.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Nick: Meshiaak was formed in late 2013 by guitarist and vocalist Danny Tomb, and lead guitarist Dean Wells. I think what started out as a bit of a fun side project and meshing of minds between Danny and Dean, eventually turned into something very real. I got a call from Dean one day, saying he had this thing going with Danny and they needed a bassist. I’m a fan of both of their separate projects, so was very keen to check out what they had in the works. The music was aggressive, fast, heavy, and had depth to it which is something I love. When Jon Dette said he wanted in, we all realized this was going to be something pretty special. We recently signed to Mascot Records and just returned from San Fransisco where we tracked Jon’s drum tracks for our debut album “Alliance of Thieves” - scheduled for a September release.
2. What is the origin of the band's name?
Nick: ‘Meshiaak’ is Hebrew for Messiah. I think it works nicely on a few levels.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Nick: With the exception of Jon, we’re located in Melbourne at the moment. As far as the scene in Australia goes, Melbourne is the place to be.
4. How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?
Nick: It’s metal. Kinda like an amalgamation of Metallica, Slayer, and Machine Head. It’s heavy, fast, aggressive, melodic, like I said it has depth to it. The album we’re working on has a definite vibe about it which I like. Everyone is a strong player with diverse influences, so I think that is really going to shine through in the end product.
5. What's your take on this album as a whole?
Nick: I’m really excited about how it’s coming along. We just wrapped up two weeks of drum tracking in San Francisco, and Jon absolutely nailed it. The dude is a machine. I think everyone involved is really pushing themselves on this album, performance and depth wise. Hopefully it makes a statement, we’ll be proud of it regardless.
6. What's your favorite song on the album right now?
Nick: I still haven’t settled on one! I think each and every song is just as strong as the next, which in turn will make for a killer album. That's the goal anyway. Ask me again in 6 months haha.
7. What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?
Nick: It’s not a weekend warrior project. All four of us live, breath and sweat music and metal. It’s a cohesive effort, everyone is playing for the song and the album as a whole. And, besides that, Jon Dette is going to turn some more heads with his parts haha.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Nick: Big ones. We've got a fair bit in the pipeline at the moment, but its all hush hush right now. September should see the release of the album “Alliance of Thieves”, hopefully we’ll be able to announce a bit more news before then.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Nick: Check out MESHIAAK on Facebook or YouTube for now.
10. What is it you'd like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Nick: The passion and energy in each and every note.
