Maxdmyz Gives Us a Rundown of the Band, Including New Music and Playing Shows
Metal enthusiasts Maxdmyz, discusses how they came together, what types of music they play and write, to where they plan to play some shows, and even release new music for all to hear!
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
We started out in London - our first release was 2001 - So it was around 2000 we started. The guy I initially worked with – both of us had been involved in long-term projects that had come to an end, and we were looking for something new. A bass player and drummer followed soon after. We’ve been through quite a few lineups over the years – I’m the only remaining founding member. Currently, we have Jay on drums, Vortex on keys, A’Zedd on bass guitar and Roger Kirchner on guitar as well as me, Twister, on vocals.
I had been in a band called Blood Simple, for a while, which had kind of fizzled out. Vortex was playing in a London electro band called Thought Criminals, and also doing solo stuff when he joined (and still is). A’Zedd was in a band called Soho Groove, Jay in space rockers, White Plastic Fanbase, and Roger in German death metallers, Apophis. As I say, Maxdmyz has been around in one form or another under this name since the turn of this century.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Truth is, I don’t know – the guy I started was a kind of metal hip-hop type character – and I think it might have been his tag or something – anyway, I have no idea what it means, and don’t ask me to pronounce it.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
London. As for the music scene, I’d love to be a little more uplifting – but it’s tough to get your music heard and out there. But the scene is also wonderful and vibrant and full of amazingly talented people – and it’s a privilege to be part of it. As for local bands – well, across the genres, Die Kur, The Francesco Fonte Band, Drilling Spree, Healthy Junkies, Brule, Hieroglyph, The Imaginary Dreamers – check ‘em out.
4. How would you describe your style?
Alternative progressive metal – with pop elements, a lot of melody and harmony, with catchy grooves. This is mixed in with some really brutal elements – across vocals and the other instruments – we’re happy bunnies, just a little intense. It’s in your face music – we’re trouble men – we’ll relax when we die.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
Too much to mention here but you can get a full list at our Bandcamp site – and don’t ask me to name a favorite – they all are, kind of. But I guess Cosmic Hearse, from the EP of the same name released a few years ago, is emblematic of what we do, as are Side with Satan and Grieve from our more recent album The Hate Plane. What can you expect from our tunes – you’re asking the wrong person, maybe one of our fans? For me, I’d like to think it’s intelligence, passion, humor, aggression, melody – and groove.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Yep, we have a new EP planned for later this year – I hope September, as they’re pretty much in the can recording wise – and an album due out next late spring. These new tunes though have already made their way into our live set.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Yep, very busy, with a bunch of gigs coming up over the next few months. You can find details on our Facebook page or our website at www.maxdmyz.uk. We’re especially looking forward to playing in France in October.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Just to keep on keeping on. What’s working for us is radio play and club nights, streaming and festivals. Always trying to hop on to tours with bigger bands, but it’s tough.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
You can get our stuff at CDBaby and iTunes and Spotify and those kinds of places – but the prices can really vary (we have no control over them) – if you go to our Bandcamp site, the prices are the cheapest, and the band gets all the money you pay.
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
The groove, the heaviness and the passion – maybe a lyric or two!
