From Inside's Tom says Be Yourself
From Inside have released their debut EP "The New Era" with plans to release more music soon enough. But as of currently they are setting their main focus on playing shows, touring their asses off! That said that more videos will be underway as their current contender "Find My Way" is setting the way for more to come. Guitarist Tom Booth discusses the EP, current singles "Find My Way" and "Be Yourself", and further plans ahead.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Tom: From the outside it probably seems like we are a brand new band and its all new territory for us but that couldn’t be further from the truth. I’ve personally been in a few bands with our other guitarist Phil for almost a decade now and everyone else has been involved in various other projects that people in the UK metal scene will most likely be familiar with… so I guess you could say we have ‘done the rounds’ before. It might sound cliche to say, but as a musician things are much different with us since starting FROM INSIDE. We really mean business this time and as a group we are so driven; we truly want to be apart of something massive.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Tom: I really wish there was a cool deep personal reason I could give you but in truth we just stumbled upon FROM INSIDE because we thought it sounded good to us. It may or may not be obvious to people but we took it from the Linkin Park song ‘From The Inside’. I guess in the future I could come across all serious and say it’s because our music comes deep ’from inside’ us but I don’t think that would be possible without me laughing.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Tom: We are from Liverpool in England. I would recommend checking out a local underground band from round here called The Beatles. I’m joking of course, but in all seriousness check out our friends bands ‘Loathe’ if you’re a metalhead or ‘Wstr’ if pop-punk is your thing. Both bands are sweet.
4. How would you describe your style?
Tom: Music is so widespread these days and I think any musician would agree that most genres are becoming so saturated that it’s becoming harder & harder to stand out in the crowd. I do believe we are at least trying to do something slightly different though with all the cinematic scores we have in our songs. I kind of see our future direction going down a sort of modernized nu-metal route. Is nu-metalcore been named as a genre yet? Ill go with that but only if i’m the first to have said it!
5. Why did you think that ‘Find My Way’ would be such a suitable single and video? Can you briefly discuss said song and video, what are they both about?
Tom: It was the last song we wrote before we went to the studio so it sort of summarized the whole writing process and where we was at mentally when starting up the band. The song is all about renewing yourself after dealing with the shit life can throw at you and the video is essentially a visual representation of that.
6. What other songs off "The New Era", do you think we will see be made into singles and or videos?
Tom: We have just this week released a brand new music video for our new single called ‘Be Yourself’. This is my personal favorite of The New Era and I strongly recommend you check it out. We will be doing one more music video sometime early 2017 but its all very secretive right now.
7. Who produced "The New Era" and what was it like working with them?
Tom:We worked with a number of different producers on different aspects. Shout out to Erik Bickerstaffe, Drew Lawson, Sam Clayton and Grant Berry. All of them were great!
8. Who did the cover art for "The New Era" and how much input did you have on it?
Tom: Our singer Simon did the cover art and pretty much every other graphic ever associated with FROM INSIDE. Having a tattoo artist in the band definitely has its perks!
9. Is there any story or concept behind the "The New Era" title?
Tom: The title is meant to define the start of us as band. Yeah its very conceptual with a lot of messages throughout. I think I would prefer to hear peoples interpretations on it all that to reveal much here.
10. Why did you want to go with releasing a debut EP that is "The New Era" as opposed to releasing a full-length album?
Tom: All down to money really haha! That's the honest answer. The original plan was to release a full album but since we were starting fresh as a new band we had to fund it all ourselves so economically it made sense for us to just debut with 5 songs. Its a sorry states of affairs but everyone knows how difficult it is for bands nowadays with how the music industry has gone. We do have enough material written for a full-length that I am sure will come out sometime this year.
11. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Tom: We just had our hometown launch show that just happened over at The Magnet in Liverpool city centre. The promoter told us its on course to be a sellout so we are super stoked for this. Beyond that we have a few festival dates and are in the midst or organizing a full UK tour. I don’t want jump the gun with further details on this so just keep an eye out on our social media channels.
12. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Tom: I think our main focus now is to just tour our asses off. I’ve got a whole catalog of demos completed on my laptop and I’m always writing new stuff all the time; so guaranteed sometime in 2017 we will be recording again. Whether this is another EP or an album just really depends on what offers come our way, hopefully a full length though!
13. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Tom: You can check us out in all the usual places; Spotify, Youtube, iTunes, Deezer, Tidal etc. We have a whole host of t-shirts available at our merch store and you can also pick up The New Era at a discounted rate on there. Just hit up http://frominside.bigcartel.com.
14. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Tom: As I touched upon earlier with where we got our band name, while I was writing ‘The New Era EP’ in the makeshift studio at my house I was revisiting the older Linkin Park albums ‘Hybrid Theory’ and ‘Meteora’ quite a lot. For most people of our generation those albums defined a lot of our childhoods and helped people get through a lot of shitty things that happens when you grow up. I think the connection many people felt with those albums back then is sort of lost these days which is a massive shame. Maybe that is due to the advancements in social media changing the way we access music but that's a whole massive debate in itself. So yeah, maybe what is specifically inspiring me to achieve with FROM INSIDE is to make music that people can relate to and help them through hard times. Maybe that comes across as massively ambitious to emulate one of the biggest bands ever but I've always been a believer that positive thinking helps people get to their goals.
