DYK says the World's Without a Face

Progressive hard rockers DYK known as Do You Know, have been hard at work writing and recording for their latest release "World Without Face". The release accompanies a single turned video for "All Criminals", said single highlighting all of the themes of this release, including social and political responsibility and issues affecting global humanity. The band got together to discuss said release, it's single, and the future upon them.

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

The band started as a collection of ideas for practicing purposes on the drums, this evolved into a full production. Not having a guitar player around me, forced me to use the synths, later on, all my primitive bass lines were develop by Oscar Fanega (The Professor), it was then, when we saw the possibilities of finalizing all the compositions, which exploded right on our face, we completed our first album “World Without Face”, and as we advance in our journey, we can find better ways for creating new and exiting ideas, now is just like a virus in a good way, there is nothing better than working on your own music. Oscar comes from a Jazz background, fanatic and devoted to our universal friend, Jaco Pastorius. I came from a different background, more funk, more Rock, although we both grew up back on the 80’s, so there is no way to escape from Rush, The Police, Peter Gabriel, Led Zeppelin among many other amazing bands and musicians, thanks for analog, tape and vinyl.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

Working on design and anything related to marketing gave us 4 very simple goals to reach: Originality, Trendy, Meaningful and Short, also, a name that can be use or placed as a graphic element and/or brand within assets such merchandise, web, printing and is easy to identify. DYK, which stands for Do You Know? Happens to be an acronym used among social networks and mobile devices, it also defines our job on writing important lyrics, and always asking that question: Do you know what is really going on around you? Look again please? That is our question for anybody…

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

We prefer to be everywhere, as we are all citizens of this beautiful planet, not limits, no frontiers, no walls to divide us, music is an Universal Language, we have no boundaries. In reference to bands, well, they are everywhere, in any city, in any town, in any language, we have so much to learn, and we prefer to be in motion, just like speed metal needs to learn from Samba, just like AC/DC played the clave deep inside the guitar riff from “You Shook Me All Night Long”, so, as you can see, we are all connected. As far as recommending bands, I can endorse anything with groove, anything original, anything with a good and interesting message. As a drummer I pay lost of attention to African and Latin Styles, there is a huge challenge not to play on 1 and 3, which is the basic kick drum for Rock, what if we move it to the 2-3 or 3-2 clave? What is we use the rumba clave instead? What if we switched to a Songo beat on the snare for the outro or on the bridge? What if we build a double kick drum pattern between 24” and 16” kick drum? Then, it doesn’t sound so square anymore; I think Terry Bozzio is actually doing a lot of that, conceivably way more than that! I guess the more we can learn, absorb from many amazing individuals, the more set of tools we can apply to our own persona.
4. How would you describe your style?

There are many ways you can define someone’s style, possibly by the instruments in the composition, the song structures, length, musical approach, beat, etc. Listening too many styles of music, musicians and era’s, we can call ourselves to be eclectic. From funk, jazz, rock, symphonic, electronic, new age, new wave, we can probably fit best around Progressive Rock, maybe some Hybrid Electronic Progressive Rock.

5. What can you tell me about your new album "World Without Face" that hasn't already been said about it?

We like to mentioned that the album ended with a positive message “Memories”, there is always hope and a simple way to resolve our problems, these solutions are all in front of us, and we don’t have to pay for them, there is no need for technology, social networks, reality shows, cars, video games to be happy. The last composition is about everything that represents true happiness, reach out and reach deep inside yourself, happiness is your responsibility and nobody else. There is lots of work to do in order to fix and help our planet, the only one we have, but there is always hope.

6. Do you have a favorite track off this album, if so which is it and why?

I really like all the compositions, but Memories transports me to my teen years, I can see all my friends having the best time of our lives with 1 dollar in our pockets and it was just awesome, I can see my dad coming from work and planning something to do over the weekend, I can see my mom interrupting a good movie and everybody going insane, I can see my first dog playing with my brother and my good neighbors, I can see all my friends going to a semi destroyed half-pipe, thinking that we can be Tony Hawk, and it was just amazing to do one crooked front-side air, that is something to remember.

7. How about the single turned video for "All Criminals". Why was this song chosen as the single and then turned into a video? Do you know what your next single and video will be?

Among all other compositions, All Criminals represents the true and bold reality of a situation that is ignored at this very moment by all of us. It is a very broad message that reflects our lack of actions among climate changes and global warming. As someone to be delivering messages to a broader audience, it is our responsibility to select the right topics, let’s someone else write about jail, drugs, prostitutes and how cool is to be a criminal, so, we took that particular word “Criminals” and turned it into something else.

We are currently working on a short production, with 3 songs, I can actually give you their names: Zero + Zero, 8 o’clock News and Trash Can. Planning to be release somewhere around September-November 2017. As far as the video, we will soon release a production for “The Procrastinator”.

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

We are planning for some LIVE shows around mid June 2017, somewhere around the Carolina's area; hopefully, we will confirm this dates within the next 1 or 2 months.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

You can find our music though our website: http://dyk-music.com, Amazon, Google-Play, you can also listen to the entire album on Spotify, Jango, and the video for All Criminals

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

I will like to see the younger generations to pay attention to lyrics, to reach out and look for meaningful experiences, please read and analyze, the world can’t revolve around INSTANT GRATIFICATION anymore, it is not sustainable.
