She Must Burn Discusses the Trails and Tribulations of the Grimoire!
She Must Burn, a symphonic female fronted act, released a dark self-titled debut EP, in early 2015. Since then though the band has expanded and developed, going on to write and record the follow and debut full-length efforts titled "Grimoire". Now that that release is upon the masses, only time will tell, just how far this act will go or end up next. Discover what was said about this new album, and the future ahead.
1. What's your take on "Grimoire" as a whole?
Grimoire is our first album and it's going to set the tone for the rest of the bands career. We wanted this to be the roots of everything we've worked towards. Something we can grow from. It's a benchmark for so much that has happened over the past year and it's something we are truly proud of.
2. Why did you want to call this album "Grimoire"?
A Grimoire is a compendium of rituals, spells and hexes. Given the amount of chemistry, emotion, blood, sweat and tears that has gone into this record and the band as a whole it seemed fitting to name it so. This is a compendium of everything we've been through throughout this band. This is the trails and tribulations of She Must Burn.
3. Would you say this album has a concept to it?
It doesn't have a direct concept by any means but it's undertone is that of the name "She Must Burn". It outlines real life struggle but with a supernatural twist. That's the underlying theme here for sure.
4. What's your favorite song on the album, right this moment?
I have several favourites but I think the wicked would have to be my favourite. In brief it's about a girl who's been cast out for being different only to end up being seduced by a dark entity deep within the forest. It's based around the idea that if you accuse someone of being something or treat someone like they're something they're not, eventually they will become that "thing". It was inspired by many different occult ideas, grimms tales and most recently the movie "the witch".
5. Who produced the album and why did you want to work with them?
The producer we worked with is Timothy Richards. We worked with him because he is a talented individual who really knows us and he also had a hand in the EP so knows what we are going for in terms of our sound too. He was great help throughout.
6. What would be the cinematic equivalent of "Grimoire"?
If I had to pick one, I guess I'd say The Evil Dead.
7. Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this album?
Not at all, we have a fair few new members since the EP was written so we knew things were going to be different. We just rolled with it to see what we could come up with. By the time the album started to come together we knew how great this album really was. We are really proud of what we've done here.
8. Are you using any new instrumentation you've never used in the recording process before?
Physical instrumentation, no but we did a lot of interesting things with plug ins that we applied to our orchestral sections. We Warped a lotime of sounds to make anything from eerie to ethereal throughout the album.
9. When did you start writing for this album?
We started writing this album just over a year ago when our new lineup was solidified and we felt comfortable to move forward.
10. Did you feel any pressure whatsoever to go in and do this album?
Definitely, not only was it our first album but our first album with new members and also our first album under a label. We had rough deadlines to meet and tours to attend throughout entire process. There was a lot of pressure but it really kept us focused and working hard.
11. Can you go into one or two tracks on the new album? If so, can you give us the track title and brief description of how the track sounds and how it came about?
The wicked, I choose this track because the first riff in this track was the first riff that our guitarist, Jonny, wrote for this band and for this album. It was a riff that he put down prior to us officially putting things together for the album. It set the tone for a lot of the music on this record. We then went on to using this track as a single and having Scott from Carnifex guest on it too. It's really strong track and although we spent a lot of time cutting it up and re writing sections to perfect it, it was technically the first song written for this album as well.
12. How do you think the vibe in the studio went overall?
Things were a lot easier after the member changes had settled in. We got together for weeks at a time in a studio set up and just went through ideas together until we had the foundations for the songs. With 6 members there's always a bit of tug of war with ideas but it gave us great grounding for when things were on the track because 6 people agreed!
13. When can we expect the new album to be released?
The new album is out now!
14. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?
New music, new videos, another tour of the states real soon and we should be traveling the rest of the world this year too. We have exciting stuff lined up. We are just waiting to tell people about them!
