Amycanbe formed in 2002, since then they have gone on to play shows, write and record music, which would lead them to have some line-up changes, as well as release countless material. In which time, it would lead up to their third full-length album to date titled "Wolf". Bassist, guitarist, and keyboardist Mattia Mercuriali discusses all there is to know about Amycanbe.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Mattia: Me and Marco started playing together in 2000 I think. After some months of line-up changing especially spent in finding a singer..Marco met Francesca. We felt immediately in love with her voice and the magic just happened. She said immediately yes and we started making concerts as soon as Paolo joined. For a few years we played as 4 then we added a second guitarist (to better reproduce arrangements from the second album and on) then 2 years ago, 2 bandmates quit and they were both replaced by our historical producer Matta. So at the moment, Amycanbe is 4 people again: Marco, Matta, Francesca and me (Mattia).
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Mattia: We had to find one but all of us had very different directions. Then Francesca came up with this, "It has to be something like "It’s Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!" Francesca has a very good friend called Amy, so it just came out as Amycanbe!
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Mattia: We are based in Romagna, Cervia on the east coast of Italy. There are a lot of good bands here and the music scene (meaning festivals and concert locations) is growing fast in the recent years. I’d recommend 64 Slices of American Cheese that are a very good Psychedelic/(Post)Rock/Tex-Mex band and Sunday Morning, a more indie oriented rock band both are from Cesena.
4. How would you describe your style?
Mattia: We started with a most acoustic/folk set (guitars and winds..occasional drums..) then we moved and started using electronics and bass frequencies.. now we are mixing electronic and rock instruments.. exchanging roles during our shows, just to create the (almost) perfect mix in our sound…never settling because I have a tendency on being bored easily..ahah..!
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
Mattia: We have released 3 full-length albums, and 2 EPs. Plus we had some "lost" tracks as I said, our first recording's were more acoustic or indie sounding, why in some way. I think we really started expressing our soul, during the second EP release, calling it "The World Is Round" (based on Gertrude Stein’s poem by the same name) in little time we did things that we never thought we'd do.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Mattia: We are always writing something. We'll see when these will be ready. We are writing new material which will be widening our music collaborations. We started collaborating with some fashion brands like Ottod'Ame (we made few tracks for them for their fashion films) and TV series soundtracks.
Mattia: Of course we will be playing a lot of gigs, in Italy, and some festivals too. You can follow our movement on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Amycanbe/ and look at our most recent photos and other activity at our Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/amycanbe/.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Mattia: I'd really like to carry on experimenting with different formats of songs, re-visiting our actual live set. Like buying new instruments as this is quite an addiction for me hehe.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Mattia: We are on Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify, Tidal, and all the major platforms. But I’d recommend you to buy our CDs and Vinyls too. As artwork is an important part of our output....you can find them through our site http://www.amycanbe.it and vinyls on Feedbands.com a very special US label that released a special edition of our second album called "Mountain Whales", and is doing great things for independent artists worldwide, check them out they are great!
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Mattia: I remember one of the first time's my brother (a quite critical guy and hardly open to compliments) had seen us live. After that show he told me "You are not resembling any other band I know". (He listens to a lot of different music). I know this is quite utopian but sometimes it is very funny to believe you are making something completely "new" as your very own. :)
