Dead Crown's Kendall says We're Just a Metal Band, that Writes Heavy Music!
Dead Crown have been quite successful with their current single turned video for "Dethrone" and upcoming next single turned video for "Black Sheep". Between the middle of these singles though, is the band hard at work, writing and recording for their debut full-length album, set for release very soon. Frontman vocalist Kendall Johns discusses these singles, the album, some back story of the band, and how much they want to tour some more.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Kendall: The band started when my old band, We Rise the Tides was coming to an end. Our drummer Bryton was Touring with my old band and him and myself hit it off pretty naturally. One day, Bryton showed me a clip of a song that him and his friend, Eric were just messing around with. The song he showed me was our single "Dethrone". I immediately talked to Bryton and Eric, and we formed Dead Crown. When looking for a bass player, we hit up our good friend Brent and it was pretty immediate. Honestly the band formed pretty quick and was just a culmination of a lot of us moving on from old projects and looking for something new that we could all get down with. Bryton came from a band called Ocean of mirrors and was in My old band with me for awhile (We Rise the Tides), Eric was in a band called Accrue and also has a band with Bryton called Paragon, and Brent came from an indie band called Trophy lives.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Kendall: I wish we had a cool story for this, but we don't. We just wanted to have a cool band name so we brainstormed and threw a ton of ideas around. In the end, we thought Dead Crown sounded sick and now here we are haha.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Kendall: We are based out of Portland, Oregon. The scene is actually pretty weak at the moment, in my honest opinion. Shows that sell out all over don't get close to selling out here. But the people we do have here are like family and we have a pretty tight nit metal community. We just need the next generation of metal lovers to start showing up and more young people to start forming bands. Id defiantly recommend checking out Sustainer and Divitius. Those bands are putting our great content!
4. How would you describe your style?
Kendall: I always tell people we are just a Metal band. We aren't metalcore, but we aren't hardcore and we aren't deathcore. We just write heavy music.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
Kendall: We have released 1 single and music video for our song "Dethrone" and we are about to release another single and music video for a song called "Black Sheep". We are currently wrapping up our album and will hopefully know what we are doing with that and whats going on with it soon.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Kendall: Yes, we stay pretty consistent with writing, so we are always writing new tunes.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Kendall: Not a whole lot at the moment. We are always looking to tour, and the tour we did a couple months ago was very successful. But so far we don't have a whole lot lined up.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Kendall: Releasing an album is defiantly the big plan haha. Besides that, we are still shaping and molding a lot of stuff so plans are up in the air and always changing. But my plan is to stay as active as possible and play as much as possible.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Kendall: We are on YouTube, Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music and all that stuff. you can buy merch from us at http://deadcrown.bigcartel.com.
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Kendall: We mean what we say and we say what we mean. We aren't a copy/paste "industry" band. We write all our own music, record it ourselves and I even do all the visuals, including our music videos for our band. We just want to relate and reach as many people that we can. And hopefully we can party with everyone at the same time someday.
