Siriun's Alexandre Discusses the Intent of the Chaos
Modern death metal act Siriun, have been hard at work upon their first full-length debut "In Chaos We Trust" with releasing a single turned video for "Intent" beforehand. Frontman vocalist/guitarist Alexandre Castellan discusses the single and debut efforts.
1.What role do you play in the band?
I sing and play lead guitar.
2. Why go with a name like Siriun? Does it have a meaning to it?
I wanted something unique and at the same time could draw a reference to something significant for me. Siriun comes from Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky and is closely linked to the history of our civilizations from ancient Egypt, Sumerians, Anasazis, Incas and to the African tribe Dogon they say their ancestors came from Sirius.
3. What has influenced your sound and style?
It’s a mix various things, not only metal, but I’d say the main influences are Led Zeppelin, Megadeth, Testament, Nevermore, Death, Carcass and Strapping Young Lad.
4. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Our songs talk about, social, philosophical and spiritual awareness, influenced by the hermeticism, and the teachings of Carl Jung, Carlos Castaneda, Wilhelm Reich, Gurdjieff among others. For instance, Mass Control draws references from the Plato's Allegory of the Cave; Transmutation talks about the alchemical concept of enlightenment; Intent references the concepts approached in the books of Carlos Castaneda etc.
5. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
Yes. The process is very intuitive. I sit around with my guitar and let the ideas flow, then I start to shape the songs with riffs that makes sense and works well. After working out the vocal melodies I write lyrics in a way that fits the melody/groove.
6. How do you describe your music to people?
A forward thinking modern death metal, with a lot of groove and some trippy acoustic parts.
7. Why did you want "Intent," to be made into a single and then video?
Intent is a strong song, it's groovy, fast, heavy and the scenery we filmed, fits very well with the theme of the song which is to: follow the path to master your consciousness in order to see the energy flowing from the universe and flow with it towards infinity, the total freedom, guided by the Intent!
8. You will soon be releasing your new album "In Chaos We Trust", can you tell me a little bit about it?
'In Chaos We Trust' is Siriun's first album. It is the culmination of a long process necessary to materialize the work I had in mind with the quality i was looking for, in terms of music and production. It does not have a definite style, it is a mixture of modern, death, thrash, groove, progressive metal and acoustic guitar passages.
It features Kevin Talley(Chimaira, Six Feet Under, Suffocation) on drums, was produced and mixed by me, mastered by Alan Douches(The Black Dahlia Murder, Cannibal Corpse) and had the artwork made by Dark Tranquillity guitarist Niklas Sundin.
9. What is the concept behind the album and how did the idea come about?
The idea for the term "In Chaos We Trust" came from our former bass player Hugo. I liked it and decided to make this the title track of the album. Although not exactly a concept album, the lyrics follow a certain order according to the concept elaborated in the title track:
From a chaotic state, an order tends to arise. The first songs deal with the chaotic state experienced in our society, the latter dealing with themes with a higher consciousness content. As if we were at a point of transition to a new level of consciousness.
10. What is your favorite song on the record and why?
I tend to stay between Transmutation and Intent. Probably because of the riffs, structure and lyrical content.
11. What can fans expect from the new album?
They can expect a lot of energy, speed, heaviness, aggressiveness and melody.
12. What was the writing and recording process like for this album?
All songs and lyrics were written by me. So I sent the songs to Kevin who worked on the drums and recorded them in Texas. So I recorded the rest of the instruments in my studio, along with Hugo who recorded the bass. I mixed it and sent to Alan for mastering.
13. Why do you think people should check out your new album once released?
If they’re looking for some furious songs to head bang to and at the same time want to hear something with a lot of layers and textures then "In Chaos We Trust" is what they need! :)
14. How would you say you differ from other bands and artists on the scene?
Even though we are not totally different, I believe we developed an identity with this album. And the fact that we are not restricted to any style, helps us to shape our sound in a way that is not so conventional.
15. What do you want to achieve as a band?
Get our name out there, spread our music to people and play in every country in the world!
16. What does next year hold for you?
Touring a lot and hopefully a second album!
