Matthew Grant says New Movement is Set in Start Mode with New Single Out and About
Matthew Grant is an up and coming R&B, hip hop, rap artist, who's mind is set on wanting to change the world, with just one track alone, titled "King For A Day". Matthew Grant himself goes into discussion about this single, his movement by it, and some backstory into himself as an artist.
1. When and why did you start playing?
I started playing when I was about 11 years old. I actually don’t know why I started playing I was kind of drawn to it.
2. Which instruments do you play?
I play the piano and the Hammond organ.
3. What was the first tune(s) you learned?
So at 11 I was playing the organ and my little tiny church in Kansas City so I’m pretty sure it was a hymn and probably not played very well either.
4. Is your family musical?
Not really. My dad played the string bass and the alto sax in high school but that’s about it.
5. Describe your family member's musical interests and abilities.
Well my dad and mom loved soul music and jazz that really made a huge impact in my music. One of my best memories is when I was younger my 3 older brothers and I would have “east coast, west coast WWF Matches” me and my oldest brother loved east coast rap and my two middle brothers loved west coast rap so we would tag team wrestle. We would tape all the video count downs from BET and MTV on VHS so we could watch them later without commercials.
6.Which musicians do you admire and have learned from and why?
There are so many. I guess my top 3 would be James Brown, Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding. James Brown for his confidence, his stage presence was like no one you had ever seen. Marvin Gaye for his ability to write and produce songs that are timeless. Otis Redding for his vocal ability. In one song he would go from a smooth sound and switch his voice up to this raspy soulful emotional amazingness.
7. What would you say your songs are about and why?
I guess the best way to describe my songs is in this phrase “everybody’s song”. My life’s goal is to write music that can be everybody’s story.
8. Speaking of which, tell me about your new single called "King for A Day".
It’s been almost like a dream come true. This song is near and dear to my heart and to see people react and share with the world what they would do if they were “King For a Day” has been phenomenal . This song kind of came from a culmination of not only my personal experiences, but also watching day to day life in society. With all of that floating in my head I realized I needed to do something. I don’t have a lot of money but I do have a voice. So I wrote a song to challenge people to think about how we could make this world better. It was really that simple. The thought that if you had all the resources you needed for one day to change the world what would you do? I just want people to think about how we can do better to make the world better.
9. Will this song come off an upcoming EP or album, or just remain as is a single?
I’m not sure right now so we will just say it’s a single.
10. What about an accompanying video to go along with said single?
I do have an acoustic version of this song that I shot a video for with a really talented director here in LA named Brandon Jermaine. As for an official video for the main version, I can’t say for sure, BUT I have a notebook full of ideas for what I want it to look like and be about. So let’s just say I’m planning for it and it’s going to be great!
11. Do you have any other works out and about, as far as releases of material go?
No not at the time. "King for a Day" is my baby. Don’t worry, I got some really nice songs that I cant wait to share with the world.
12. What plans do you have set for this year?
My biggest plan is to get "King For a Day" on the radio and internationally recognized. Also I want to start the movement "King for a day Challenge". This is were people do good deeds to make the world a better place. Could you imagine if this caught on like wild fire around the world? It could really bring about change!
13. Where do you see yourself as Matthew Grant in 5 years from now?
In 5 years I would love to be a house hold name. When people think of Soul music in the 21st century Matthew Grant is the first name that comes to mind.
14. If you could run into yourself of the past of you starting out as a musician, what would you say to yourself and why?
Pay more attention to the greats. Start young so you could be a better musician.
15. Can you express anything else you have not had the chance of saying to us?
Please go and do something nice for someone today. Go and make somebody’s day brighter!
