Running Red Lights Discusses the Songs of Blue!
Indie pop group Running Red Lights have just released a new single titled "Songs of Blue" off their yet to be released album. But for the time being, the band goes into discussion about this single, it's album and other plans set for the rest of this year!
1. Lets start with introductions, who are you and what do you do in the band?
We are Scarlett Flynn (lead vocal), Kevin Howley (lead vocal/drummer), David Puzak (guitar) and Jeff Carter (bass).
2. So Running Red Lights is a unique name – is there a story behind it? Where did it come from?
I envy bands with purposeful, deep-meaning anecdotes behind their names, I wish we had one, however, unfortunately Running Red Lights was simply a name created in haste to replace our initial name that had some copyright issues. We literally sat around grabbing at dictionaries, novels, publications etc until the right combination of words materialized.
3. How would you describe the music style that your band creates and plays?
Over the course of 12 years together, as you can imagine, the band has undergone many stylistic transformations. Currently we are a male/female fronted indie pop group with adequate traces of folk, soul and country.
4. You recently released your newest single "Songs of Blue", where did you find the inspiration for the fun track?
I have long cited Joni Mitchell as an inspiration and often, as mentioned in the press release, in my most vulnerable, heart-rending moments it is always Joni's music that offers some nourishment...feeding my grief and self-pity while simultaneously bringing me comfort. It was in one of these moments that "Songs of Blue" was written.
5. Will this track receive an accompanying music video or remain as a single only?
We will not have an official music video for "Songs of Blue," however we do have a lyric video. YouTube Link as follows; https://youtu.be/eyg6imXHaCM.
6. What would you say this track means to you and why?
"Songs of Blue", which is often the case with songwriting, was in part a cathartic writing experience. It was a way to stay in touch with myself and others, a method of carrying news from my world to theirs. "Songs of Blue" is an honest dialogue of a true experience that I’ve had under grievous circumstances. I feel confident that their are many people that have specific songs or albums that comfort them in their moments of sorrow and it’s for them and myself I considered when writing "Songs of Blue."
7. Where does "Songs of Blue" come from as far as a release?
"Songs of Blue" was selected as the first single from our soon-to-be released album "I Am You", expected to release in late 2018.
8. Do you have any other music in the works?
We finished recording the last track of our album in February of this year. Currently we are focused on its release as well as live performances, however, there are always lots of nuggets of ideas floating around, some of which I'm sure will make their way to a recording studio at some point soon.
9. What are the plans set for the rest of this year?
Essentially we are focused on rolling out a couple more singles prior to the release of the full-length album. We have a residency coming up at the legendary Cameron House in Toronto every Monday in July. We are headed to Nashville in August to pursue some songwriting collaborations. A UK tour is a possibility as well, depending on the timing of the album release.
10. Is there any final words for our readers out there?
It’s important for our supporters to know that we are writing and playing music that inspires us in the hope that it also inspires others. Always big big love to music publications, bloggers such as yourself that give independent artists a platform to engage and connect ourselves and our music to others xoxoxo!
