Rock n' rollers AVALANCHE have only got two singles under their belts "Head First in Hell" and "Balls Deep", with a follow-up EP expected soon enough. The EP titled "Sent From Hell", it showcases a variety of tracks and will be out and about soon enough as said prior. The band got together to talk about this EP and all else there is to know about this up and coming band!
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Veronica: My names Veronica, but everyone calls me V, I play guitar for Avalanche.
Ryan: I'm the drummer.
Steven: I'm lead singer and bass player. Avalanche originally formed when Ryan and Veronica started jamming together a couple years ago, I think they met through his sister who Veronica went to school with. They went through a quite a few different bass players, rhythm guitarists and singers before they met me through a musicians forum. I'd just moved down from QLD where my last band had broken up, and after a few months of living in Sydney Veronica reached out to me and asked if i'd be interested in auditioning for her band which didn't even have a name yet.
Veronica: He showed up to the wrong address. But what impressed me is that he actually took the bus and the train for 2 hours to still make it to jam with us rather then just going home. He became our lead singer and when our bass player stopped showing up, he became our bass player too.
Ryan: From that point on we started writing original material and ended up hitting the local scene in Sydney. Now were planning our debut double EP release for May 1st of this year.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Steve's Dad, Adrian Campbell was in a band called Avalanche in the 70s and the 80s, they used to belong to the same management company as AC/DC, they have even played with them and some other major bands at that time, we thought it was an awesome sounding name and wanted to keep the rock and roll family tradition going.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We’re based in Western Sydney which is good at the moment we play a lot of the local pubs and venues. There’s so many good bands in Sydney, but some times it's hard to get people to come out to see somebody that isn't a DJ. Even with all the government lock out laws and noise restrictions, it’s still a really vibrant scene down here if you know where to look, which is why more people should go see live gigs with live bands and support the local scene, who knows what these people will end up doing.
4. How would you describe your style?
It’s a raw punchy Hard Rock, with inspiration from 70’s-80’s style hard rock. The Australian rock scene specifically was a big inspiration as well, with bands like AC/DC, Rose Tattoo, the Angels, Stevie weight, which is tied together with our own taste and style.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
So far we’ve released two singles, ‘Head First in Hell’ and ‘Balls Deep’, which came out pretty quick and caused quite a buzz with the local scene. They showcase some of the best of our skills in a lot of ways, a really energetic performance that sounds BIG.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Yeah so we just recently finished off the recording and a lot of the work for our upcoming double EP called ‘Sent From Hell’, it showcases 4 studio recordings and 4 live recordings, a multi-track taken from a performance at the Bull and Bush Hotel and then mixed and mastered, which will be released digitally May 1st.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Over the next few months we’ll be playing around 5 shows all over Sydney in promotion for the upcoming EP, and we're still booking more shows. We’ll be playing around about two weeks apart starting from April 27th at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, May 9th at the Bull and Bush Hotel in Baulkham Hills, May 19th at Valve Bar, June 9th at Chatswood Club, June 19th at Kelly’s on King which we’ll be selling physical copies of the EP at as well.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Our long term goal at the moment is to get into a festival and play a big date, we came to that decision around when we first started and we’ve just kept moving toward that goal. We have been recently added to a competition for Woop Woop Festival in Queeensland where we need people to vote us into the lineup here: https://www.woopfest.com.au/music-search/avalanche/. 10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Steven: Hopefully they’ll listen to our songs and feel the same way we felt when we wrote them, which could be good in a lot of ways, and bad in some, but they definitely will feel and remember something when they listen to our music.
Veronica: I think Slash or someone said, a good rock song has either gotta make you want to fight or fuck. So yeah, that.
Ryan: I hope our listeners feel like that they want to break shit when they listen to our songs and each time thereafter, but of course I'd say that because I'm the drummer.
