Madstone Talks of Themselves the Music They Make

Madstone had started out as a whole another thing, with some mishaps in-between but after everything was arranged the right way, Madstone would continue to release music, creating an even more tighter grip on the rock music that they were creating.

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

It started in 2009 as Hester Prynee with Steve Burnside.  Steve passed away not long after we got started. I loved his music and didn't want it to die along with him.  I got permission from his family and added my own music and Madstone was born.  We still play 6 or 7 of his best tunes.  It started with Tommy Souza on drums,  Al Young on bass and we added Shannon Shrogin on guitar.  The first 2 CDs were done with these 4. Later Shannon had to leave  with family issues and we brought Mark Doolin in to replace him and finished our 3rd CD.  Mark helped me write 4 of the tumneson Heavy Thunder.  In Oct 2017, Madstone really needed to be somewhere where music was appreciated and I decided to move us to Texas near Austin.  Tommy Souza came with me.  He later on decided a woman was more important.  It happens and went back to California.  I then met Andy Ramos on bass and James York on drums and we've been a 3 piece ever since.  I miss all those guys and the contributions they have made to Madstone but it sounds better than ever.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

A long time ago when I first started playing in a band, a guy names Mark Madson and myself James Stone came up with the name Madstone. The name was dormant for a long time.  Then when Steve passed away, we had a gig, they asked what the name of the band was.  I always liked the name.  It stuck.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

We are based out of Temple Texas, smack dab in Central Texas.  We recommend Scratch 3, Another band of Gypsies if you're out this way.

4. How would you describe your style?

70's rock and roll with a southern flair.  New country without the twang.

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

We've released 3 CD's so far, they just keep getting better.  Working on the next release.  You can expect to bang your head and rock out. It's fun music and it's best listened to after a few beers. That may sound funny, but people loosen up and when they hear us, realize their bodies are moving to the music whereas they might hold up, be reserved otherwise.  If you're up for a party, we are there.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

Yes, we like to have at least 8 or 9 tunes on a CD.  We're about halfway there.

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

We're playing 3 or 4 times a month all over central Texas and once in a while at big biker rallies. Check the schedule.

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

Just to keep on rockin, having fun, keep making music.  You have to enjoy this a lot.  It sure isn't for the money. If something happens, that would be awesome, we'll keep trying, but we love to play, love to entertain.  We'll keep at it until somebody big notices.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

http://www.madstoneband.com. Find us on iTunes, Spotify, Zune, and others

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

Madstone has a lot of variety. What I consider the most pretty piece of 12-string music in "your Eyes", some metal with "angel Blade", rock your ass off with "Mr Bones Wild Ride" (big favorite) heavy rock like "Heavy Thunder", and even something patriotic like "freedom Isn't free". There are some very different tunes that cover a lot of genres. There's something for everyone I think.  So don't just listen to one song and make a judgement call. You'll miss what you're looking for.
