Hellbound Hearts Talks of New Music, Show Playing and the Future!
Alternative rock, metal, dark pop act HELLBOUND HEARTS has been around for a while, releasing material including an all new EP "One Thirteen" out soon. Shows are in the works with even more material already underway as well! The band goes on to talk about all of this and what their future holds.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Ok, the band started back in 2011, our singer Danny was on the road with Terrorvision but wanted to work on his own visions so it all kicked off. The first EP was written and set a tone for what we wanted to do. You grow as a band so it was a starting block for the sound we would get on to develop, a real niche of our own. Members wise we became a 4 piece last year, so we have Danny on bass and vocals, Craig on guitar and backing vocals, Lee on drums and Nath on guitar as well. Its filled out massively as we used to tour as a 3 piece but its great to now have the full sound that we always wanted. Waiting for the right guy to join was worth it! There's a great mix of fellas into 90's Brit music, metal, and enough life experience to make it interesting!
We released out 1st album 2 years called "Film Noir" which we got great reviews on, across a lot of main stream UK media outlets and the big rock and metal mags that you pick up in town. It was great to see the logo in a magazine you’ve been reading as a fan for years!
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Good question! There is a short story by Clive Barker called "The Hellbound Heart" which went on to become the movie "Hellraiser", so it wasn’t a million miles away to call ourselves Hellbound Hearts! We are all a bunch of horror fans and the feel of that first movie being dark, awkward and totally uncomfortable really sort of summed it all up. The sequel was called "Hellbound" so yeah there's a lot of intertwining with the odd dark music that we do and those films. Danny has a picture signed by Pinhead in his "office" no less.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
The band are Yorkshire based, so Northern England, though as players we span from varying postal codes. Music scene wise its hard to say. Leeds is a trendy city and there are enough places near by but we are an up and running touring machine. We just hop into our van and get where we need to be because we know once we are up there then its all worth it. The UK isn't huge so with stop offs either before or after then you can do a decent run over a weekend.
4. How would you describe your style?
Many people have tried. One of the main things that came out of our reviews from the last album was that it was a genuinely new sound. That was probably the greatest compliment we could have imagined, and is one that we get quite a lot. If you had to pin it down to sounds and references then I guess you'd say something like a mix between the Foo Fighters and Type O Negative or Paradise Lost. Catchy melodies with some real goth tinged guitars in there. There's something for every one. We don’t like to stick our flag in one musical genre, so we stuck it in 5 or 6!
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
First one was a self titled number back in 2011 just called "Hellbound Hearts". This was followed by "Outside" which is when the band went on tour with Terrovision and started to get a bit of a name. The third EP "Proximity Effect" was a great mix of high melody with some heavy guitars that kind of cemented what had come before really. We did a stand alone single called "Nancy’s House" which we still close the set with to this day which I think is where the sound started to get molded into what it is today. It was a lot more darker and heavier and just had a real good grunt about it to get people up and about. We get that one shouted out quite a lot! The "Film Noir" album was the next step and that really made a difference, it was a lot darker than the older stuff, but is where most of our most popular tunes have come off, I think that’s where we hit "our sound" if you can say such a thing. We did a 2 leg tour over a year and half around the UK to pretty much every venue we could find. We covered a lot of miles, slept in weird places, woke up in weird places and made a lot of new friends that we still see.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Absolutely, we have our new EP "One Thirteen" out on Friday 13th September, again it’s a progression from the last recording but with a common theme and edge to let you know its us. Certainly darker again!
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We have some tricks up our sleeve! Nothing announced apart from a few local shows and the main EP launch party on October 11th at Nightrain in Bradford. There's so much going on that is on the exciting side of things that we cant tell you about its not fair!
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
We hooked up with Inner Light Agency in LA to help with it all! We have about 2 more albums already written and ready to go as it is right now. We are looking to get out and onto the European festival circuit and hopefully to the US as well. With the feedback we’ve had, with the hard work we have put in and with the great things going on that I know we have then the future is looking great, so I hope you can come along with us!
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
We are on all the majors – iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Spotify, Deezer, YouTube to buy and stream so you can get a taste for it before it grabs you there. We have our official online store and news / updates from our main site at www.hellboundhearts.co.uk along with the usual www.facebook.com/wearehellboundhearts, www.twitter.com/hbhuk and www.instagram.com/hellbound_hearts.
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
There was a cool line in the Private Parts movie about Howard Stern;
"Of those that like you the most common answer is "I want to see what he’ll say next""
Of those that don’t like you the most common answer is "I want to see what he’ll say next"
If its your first time hearing Hellbound Hearts, you’ll see that the unexpected can really make a song!
