Attrition Chats of Music, Shows, and More!
Industrial, experimental dark ambient post punk goth act ATTRITION, have quite a bit of content since their formation. Currently their newest album is out, with a single to boot, as well as the band have plans for all new shows across numerous places for this year. Find out what more was said in the chat below.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
ATTRITION started way back in December 1980… so this year we will be enjoying our 4oth anniversary… but first we are releasing the new single… The Great Derailer… and album, The Black Maria…and continuing our shows around the world… ATTRITION has been through various line up changes but always centred on founder Martin Bowes… these days often with guest musicians. We have released many albums over the years and toured all over the place…. Its been a wonderful journey…
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
It was inspired by a fascination with World War One… known as a war of ATTRITION…. Partly as my Grandad was wounded on the Western Front in Belgium in 1917. In 2015 we made an album of WW1 war poetry set to ambient soundtracks…. “Millions of the mouthless dead” . Even having the honour of having Wolfgang Flur from Kraftwerk as a guest reader on one track.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are from Coventry, England, although moved around a bit in the eighties and lived in London and Holland for a while… Coventry has a great local scene these days with post punk bands such as Futumche and Wolf Suit I would really rate.
4. How would you describe your style?
Its been many years and different influences, and albums from upbeat electronics to dark ambient soundtracks… ATTRITION has always reached out into the darkness… but there is light there if you look hard enough.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
Around 25 albums, including live albums and remixes… and a horror film score, Invocation, that featured on an indie US film, and has also been performed live in the UK, Canada, Germany…and most famously in Transylvania in 2018.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Yes always…the new album The Black maria and first single from that is The Great Derailer

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We have just come back from our first tour in Japan…4 shows there… we loved it and will go back…the next shows planned are in the UK, South America, Canada and more European cities.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Well I will complete the new album and then as always look for new works and collaborations sometimes…. It’s a wonderful journey making music…there will always be something new.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
It is available on all the streaming platforms (Spotify/itunes/Amazon etc) and for all the physical releases and merchandise do go to our official bandcamp site…https://attritionuk.bandcamp.com/.
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
The feeling…. What it says to you…. How you react to it…. this... Thank you so much for the interview! Do check out our other official sites too. All the best, Martin Bowes. Coventry, England. 2020.
