Ifreann Discloses Matters on Music Making and More!
Old school thrashers with a dash of new wave of British heavy metal groovy go getters IFREANN, have released a couple of single's, debut EP "Unearthly", with an all new follow-up EP "Desecration" out in a short while. The band got together to disclose the matters on themselves and the music that they have built to create.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Ifreann was formed in mid 2015 in Edinburgh by drummer Euan Henderson & bassist Jacob Nicolson. Later joined by Ian Gil, Ben Sanders & Alina Levanova, Ifreann have been gigging non-stop, have recorded 3 EPs, toured Scotland, England and Ireland (March 2020).
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Ifreann is Gaelic for “Hell”. We liked the idea of having Gaelic name, as it recognises our history but also allows us to come up with unique name.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Ifreann have always been primarily based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Edinburgh has always had a strong Groove Metal/Stoner Metal scene, but almost parallel to us forming, Scotland’s Thrash scene has really kicked up a notch, with the founding of ‘Central Scotland Thrash’. In my opinion, Scotland has the strongest Thrash Metal scene in the UK.
4. How would you describe your style?
Ifreann play old-school style Thrash Metal, with a tad of NWOBHM melody, Groove metal breakdowns and some Extreme Metal aggression.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We released two singles in late 2017, which were completely self recorded. These two songs have a super raw production, but still maintaining that Thrash catchiness, which made them very popular among thrash fans when they first came out. In Jan 2019, we released our EP ‘Unearthly’ which was much more polished and well played, and contained songs with more mature songwriting.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
We have a new EP ‘Desecration’ coming out on Feb 21st 2020..
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We’ve played dozens of shows in our hometown of Edinburgh, and our next door neighbour city of Glasgow. We have strong fanbases there and we rarely play a show that isn’t packed. We have also played Inverness & Perth in Scotland, York, Leeds, Newcastle, Manchester, Sheffield & Nottingham. We have shows in Dublin, Belfast, Cork, London & Shrewsbury locked in too. We also have a Germany tour in the infant stages.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Ifreann have goals of becoming a household name in the UK metal scene. We plan to be festival regulars within 5 years.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
We are available on all major streaming sites, as well as bandcamp & youtube. We also have a big cartel, where we sell a wide variety of merch. (ifreannofficial.bigcartel.com).
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
A lot of our currently material was recorded on a budget. Most of the songs, particularly the drums and vocals, were done in 2-3 takes.
