Lost In Majority Talk A LOT!
Alternative progressive rock band LOST IN MAJORITY have two albums along with an all new EP release titled "The Age of Lies", and have plans to write even newer songs soon enough. But besides that release, the band is set to play a show in a few month's with more shows to follow in the fall. Otherwise the band did take sometime to talk about all of this stuff and much more below!
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
We already had the first jams in 2002, but it was 2003 when we put ourselves in a rehearsal room as a band. And yeah, we were bloody beginners. Some of us just started to learn the instrument with the band. Herb, who until then had only made electronic music, could play the piano, but wanted to develop himself on the guitar. Gerald, who could actually play the guitar, wanted to concentrate more on the vocals. So it took some time until we found ourselves as a band. But it was a good mix of a lot of fun and hard work.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
For a long time we wanted to make every decision unanimously. Anyone could veto it. So we always had majorities, but very often we didn't reach a decision. I can no longer say how many name proposals we had, but there was actually always someone who vetoed them. At that point we were pretty frustrated and Lost in (the) majority.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Lost in Majority is based near Vienna, the capital of Austria. Austria is very famous for its music. And so it’s no surprise that the Austrian music scene is very alive. For some time now there has been a trend towards German music. But Austria is also a very small country. The Austrian market is therefore not interesting for the major players. Apart from pop from the 80's until today there are also very few radio stations that would play alternative music. That's why a lot of Austrian bands try to succeed in Germany. The most famous Austrian band right now is “Bilderbuch”. They played in Austria for many years, but only became really famous in Germany.
4. How would you describe your style?
We think that it is hard to describe our style. No matter where you’d put us, we won’t really fit in. For some time we described our sound “Alternative Rock” but if you listen to all those Alt-rock Bands, they do not really sound like we do. We do have some Progressive Rock influences, but we are definitely not a common Prog-rock Band either. Maybe Progressive Alternative Rock might fit best?
We honestly don’t know. But apart from Headlines, we have a big focus on melodies. We always want to make good songs. And of course we still like our guitars distorted. Most of our songs are heavily influenced by classical music. So we often use the piano and synths. If you listen to our songs you will see that we try to keep it diversified. There is not “the one song” that could describe how we sound.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
Lost in Majority has released two albums. The first one's raw charm is captivating from the first seconds. It was partly homemade, partly recorded in a studio but wholeheartedly produced to rock.
The second LP "Falling To Ashes" was a big step forward songwriting- and production-wise.
In only eight songs we tried to break through genre boundaries but also to deliver a mainstream record in the best sense of the word.
We hope and we believe that our music affects our audience in multiple ways. On the one hand we hope that the songs we have put our hearts and souls into thrill our crowds on the same level it thrills us playing them. On the other hand we hope that our messages of social-, human- and environmental justice spark new ideas and perspectives in as many people as possible.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
There's a long list of ideas and song designs or riffs, but we've put all the best finished songs on our new EP “the age of lies”. It was hard work to make this EP sound as great as possible. But we are really looking forward to write new songs again.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
There will be an EP release show on 15.5.2020 in the AERA Vienna. We have a very good reason why we will not play a gig until then. Our drummer is about to have his third child. There will be gigs in fall 2020 though.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
The most important thing for us as a band has always been that we have fun making music together. As mentioned earlier, we will work on new songs. If you listen to our music you’ll see that our sound has changed already. We want to continue to change and perhaps become even bolder in the future. We want to write music that does not always adhere to common conventions. But definitely not as an end in itself, we still attach great importance to good songwriting.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
We will release some of our songs on “the age of lies” in the next month. Our EP will be released on 15.5.2020. You can get our music on all major platforms. Be sure to follow our social media channels so you cannot miss anything.
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
First of all we hope that we can make you all feel what we feel when we play the songs. We’d like to pass on the energy and emotion. And of course, if you pay attention to our lyrics, you know, that we care a lot about what’s going on all around us these days. Sometimes we get asked why we don’t make happy songs. Of course, cheerful songs have their justification, but if we have the opportunity to say something, then we also want it to have meaning. In our songs we try to figure out who we are and in what kind of environment we are living in. In recent years, the impression is growing that we are reaching our limits. We want to help create awareness within the scope of our possibilities. So we hope, that our listeners also pay attention to what we want to say.
