Thorn Talks of New Music, Show Playing and More!
Metalcore band THORN have released a few single's, along with an EP. A follow-up EP is expected this spring, with a release show to follow and see what else can be set-up. See what else the band had to talk about involving their music and more below.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
THORN. was founded by Luca (drummer), Julian (keys) and Patrick (guitar) back in 2016. Moving on from their last project “Prevail Over One’s Horizon (highly recommendable), they set off to experiment with new sounds and write new music and demos just for fun. Quickly convinced and inspired by their new sound, they set off to realize this by adding more members, starting with Mischael on guitars. They had known each other for some time, played many times together with their past bands and Luca did all the recordings and production for Mischael’s previous band. Later on Ronnie (ex-vocals) joined and Josh finalized the line-up by filling in on bass. Fascinated and driven by the same passion, THORN. shaped and perfected their sound and by April of 2017 had a full set for their first concert. By the end of 2018 two singles and their debut self-titled EP had been released. From their first concert until today, THORN. has had the opportunity to share the stage with many national and international bands. Some highlights being opening for Emmure , All That Remains and also having the chance of being part of the Greenfield band contest finale of 2019 for the largest rock and metal festival of Switzerland. In 2019, THORN. parted ways with their first vocalist and focused on creating new songs. At the beginning of the year, Silvan was announced as the new vocalist and a new single was released which he was featured on.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
The band name THORN. was originally inspired by a song from The Devil Wears Prada and reformed a bit. While creating our Facebook page, we had to rework it due to evading copyright laws. The all caps and set point were added as part of that process , we think it gives it a modern and catchy optical vibe.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
The founders Luca, Julian and Patrick are from Olten, Switzerland. Josh, Mischael and Silvan are from Bern. Mischael and Silvan being from Thun, the beginning of the Bernese oberland where all the pretty mountains are. The metal scene in Switzerland, speaking of the more „underground“ scene, is not all too large, but very close and familiar. There’s always a face you’ve seen at another concert and the local bands here are very supportive to each other. Some of our favorite bands, which are also great friends, are No Kings No Slaves, Nubia, Invoker, Save Your Last Breath and Artifiction. Definitely make sure to give them a listen!
4. How would you describe your style?
Modern, differentiated metal. Adding electronic elements to progressive-, hard- and metalcore.
THORN. focuses on modern production and not only relies on heavy rhythm parts and mesmerizing melodies, but completes this by fusing elements of the electronic and synthwave genres, aiming to create and deepen their sound with atmospheric, nostalgic vibes.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
Two singles – “Reminiscence” and “New Chance” – and a self-titled, seven-track EP at the end of 2018. The latest release is “Noctum”, which premiered on the 7th of February.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
A new EP titled “Hypnotalk” is planned to be released in April. The EP will feature five brand new songs.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We have a couple of local shows coming up with some awesome bands/friends of ours.
No tour is planned as of today, but not excluded.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Releasing our new EP including a release show. After that, we will focus on organizing further shows and probably continue writing new songs. At the end of the day and at heart, we are six friends who enjoy each other’s company, creating music and jamming together, that we want to share with the world.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Our goal instrumentally is to write music that is catchy, groovy, energetic as well as spherical. Lyrically we try to provoke thought by writing songs basing off of modern and current social, cultural as well as environmental situations we believe are relevant and worth questioning or criticizing. In the end, we hope the listeners feel and hear the same as we do.
