Brokentooth Goes into Detail About Music, Planning and More!

Metalcore band BROKENTOOTH released their debut EP. along with a couple of music videos too. All new music is also being written currently, with shows to be put on hold but will resume soon enough. Other than that, the band goes into details about more activity plans and more.

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

We formed as BrokenTooth in 2019, after Jed (vocals) and Jack (guitar) had decided to work on producing some initial music together. Jed has been in a number of bands previously, and Jack was a massive fan of Jed’s vocals, so it was a bit of a fan boy moment when Jed asked to work with him on a project! Jed’s vocal range is something we in the band are all in awe of, and it’s astounding hearing him each time we record - he just gets better and better. Jack is the real heart of the band - a talented songwriter, guitarist and a born musician who just keeps coming up with the majority of the ideas that ultimately make it in to our singles.

After putting together some initial rough demos, and feeling that these were good, but needed to be tested in a band setting, Mitch (drums), was bought in to the mix. Naturally, Mitch grew up playing in punk bands and had known Jed for many years, but had never turned his hand at metal drumming or even played a double bass pedal before, despite metal being a large part of his musical taste. However, he was excited by the music and ideas that had been put forward and felt compelled to be a part of the project and take on the mantle of the back beat of the band.

Both Peter (guitar) and Charlie (bass) were then added to the band in late 2019, with Peter’s technical abilities on guitar and Charlie’s flare and consistency on bass making the both of them obvious choices for completing the band. All five members have been in various bands over previous years, but we are all very excited with the sound we have found within BrokenTooth and the bond between us. The majority of the band knew each other well before this had begun, and some had even played in previous bands together, so there was a real click between us and respect for each other right from the first time we all played, and that has just continued to develop as time has gone on. The progress made since the initial conception of the band has been huge, with each member really coming into their own and influencing the music produced.

To add to that, the band also record and produce all of our songs ourselves, with Jack undertaking the recording and acting as the mixer and producer for each of the songs - the amount of hard work and passion that we put in to the songs is huge as it is all done ourselves and Jack’s recording and producing abilities have enabled us to really bring out the sound we wanted on each of our songs.

2. What is the origin of the band’s name?

The name actually derives from our lead vocalist Jed - he was set the unenviable task of brainstorming ideas for the band’s name and was rolling his tongue around the back of his mouth which, in his words, is ‘a minefield of broken teeth’. As such, the name BrokenTooth was born!

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

We all hail from Hertfordshire, which is just north of London in the South East of England. It goes without saying that the music scene in London is massive, with some great venues and bands around the area. As for Hertfordshire specifically, a lot of the venues we played at when we were younger have unfortunately closed, but there are still some great venues and bands in the local scene. Club 85 in Hitchin hosts a number of gigs and local bands and is a great venue to play – we actually played our first show there when we first started out. As for local bands, there is a great amount of talent coming out of the home counties – particular mentions would go to our friends in Ruina, Descendent of Odin and Far from Refuge, who are definitely worth checking out if you haven’t already.

4. How would you describe your style?

This is a difficult one – and something we’ve discussed within the band. We’ve tended to describe the music generally as ‘melodic metalcore’, but I wouldn’t say that it’s generic metalcore. We try to think of our music as to how it will make people feel and how it makes us feel – we have some aspects of metal, melodic, punk, groove and thrash all thrown in to our songs, with clean and dirty vocals, so we’d like to think that there’s a little something for most in there.

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

We released our debut EP ‘Mortuss Est Salus’ at the beginning of 2020, along with our first music video ‘Burnt Ground’, which we were hoping to gig on the back of for the first part of the year, but due to COVID-19, we were limited as to the number of shows we were able to play. The good news about this though is that it did give us more time to write and record more songs, and our latest single and video for ‘R.O.T’ was released July 2020, with much more to come!

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

As above, COVID-19 gave us some real time to write and reflect on our music and the direction we want to head. We’ve written a number of songs and begun the recording and production on these – we’re really stoked with how they are sounding and the direction of travel. R.O.T was the first to be released and you can certainly expect a few more singles and videos before the year is out.

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

With the current uncertainty with when gigs will resume, and in what format, things have been on hold a bit with that aspect. All of the shows we had planned and scheduled from March onwards were cancelled or are due to be rescheduled. We have however been in talks with a number of bands and promoters with regards to booking gigs and a tour as soon as it is safe to do so, so you can expect us to be on the road and playing as soon as we can. We all love playing live and can’t wait to get back out there.

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

We love the music we write and we love playing live. Our real aim is to keep progressing with our music and getting out and playing to as wide of an audience as possible. We are all looking forward to continuing to release more music, venturing out to a variety of different places and hopefully, once things are back to normal, get on to a number of gigs and festivals and who knows from there? A tour across Europe would be great to do though.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

All of our current songs are available on all major streaming platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music and YouTube. We are currently in the process of getting our first sets of merch produced and these will be coming soon, along with details on how to purchase these. The best place to follow us for updates are on our Facebook at ‘We Are BrokenTooth’ or on Instagram at @wearebrokentooth.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

I’d like anyone who listens to us to just enjoy and feel the music. There is so much effort that goes into creating the songs, the melodies and feel of it. We want our heavy songs to make people feel that anger that’s portrayed, the melodic songs to feel the passion put into them. But mostly, we’d just like people to enjoy listening to them. We always aimed for our songs to be something that was heavy enough to hold their own in the genre, catchy enough to want to nod your head along to and melodic enough that metalheads could sing along to them – I think we’ve been able to do that.
